DVD Talk review of 'The Gary Cooper Collection'
I read Holly E. Ordway's DVD review of The Gary Cooper Collection at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=16094 and...
I'm pleased to see you gave such a good review to what are, for the most part, relatively obscure films in the Cooper canon. I know you state upfront that your intended audience is the younger crowd (who sometimes have to be dragged kicking and screaming to b&w movies), but I think you're a little too apologetic about the qualities of these films. Several of them -- especially "Beau Geste" and "Design for Living" -- hold up remarkably well. And of course, Cooper himself was probably the first truly great male star of the sound era. (At least, he predated both Cagney and Gable.)
By the way, I was surprised that you didn't mention that "Design for Living" was directed by the great Ernst Lubitsch. "Design for Living" is perhaps one of his lesser films, but any Lubitsch film is worth a purchase.
