Built-in DVD players?
My friend just bought him a 52" RCA projection TV and it has a built-in DVD player along the bottom left the screen. Ironically, he doesn't have any DVDs, so I took over my Star Wars: ANH DVD to try it out. PQ wasn't bad, but it wasn't that great either. The fact that the TV is one of those rear projection types where the side glare mades it unwatchable, didn't help.
During the scene where Vader first makes his appearance on the the Blockade Runner, I noticed there were some jaggies along his arms and shoulders.
The settings for the player were quite simple. No settings anywhere for progressive or interlaced display or anything. Very rudimentary controls over-all really.
So my question is that is an internal built-in player like this suitable, or would he be better off buying a stand-alone player, and using component hook-ups?

If he bought a quality player, it would probably look better. If it's got HDMI or DVI ports he may want to look into an upscaling player.
I don't have that movie on DVD so I've no idea if that's a mastering problem on the disc; and who really knows what DVD components he's got in it, but from my experience built-ins like that are 'adequate' but not necessarily the best option.

Definitely better off buying a separate player and going with component hookup. I did this very thing on my Philips 27 inch that is my secondary TV. It gives a very good picture with it's built-in DVD player but it's been known to be finicky about discs, and in time I'm sure it will die off while the TV itself will be going strong. Even on my cheesy lil 27 inch tube set the PQ was better when I went with a standalone DVD player. I can't imagine that a good player with component hookup won't look better on his 52 inch set than a built-in unit with only the simplest of options, either.....
