I work at a B&N. DVD Box Sets are normally 10% off full retail, so the best deal likely is for members who buy 2 box sets and get 1 free with the 10% off box sets and the 10% membership discount.

Boxsets get atleast an additional 10% off (if over $39.99 or 3 disks I believe) -- so if you include 10% member discount with the 3 for 2 and previous additional 10% for boxsets = atleast 40-46% (per DVD or boxset). Sometimes the "additional" discount is also applied to some non-boxset DVD's and the boxsets may be even more off.

The benefit here is: instant gratification and you do not have to wait for a supposed sale, you can check for floaters and you know it will be in stock (you can actually see and touch it :)

BTW - I actually got some stuff the last time they had one a year or 2 ago - got some limited ed, hard to find - like the Galactica Cylon mask set.

The problem I had was does the store I am in have what I want to make the 3 for 2 work right (equal priced sets or close enough).

Well, dvdplanet always has their $39.95 Criterions at 35% off, which makes them $25.96, with no tax in my state, and you get free shipping over $25.00. So the only "cheapest" option at B&N is the Criterion box sets as far as I can tell, but I'm gonna hold off for a certain sale where they'll be around 45 bucks each.

I agree MScottM - there are some good prices there. Some are better than "supposed" future online sales events, some are close within a couple dollars or less and some not. You have to decide if you want to chance the online or see it and be sure (floaters, etc.). I actually made up a spreadsheet to calculate the prices, including sales tax and shipping so I can know for sure what is the best price and the difference in price between the top 3. This way I can make an informed decision on what is "best," qualified as is it low enough for that DVD that I will pay, do I want it now, do I want to chance it going lower (a sale here or there), if not the lowest is the extra cents or dollars worth it or so small not worth quibbling over.

Sometimes when you do the math, as MScottM said, you may find out the pricing is better than expected, if not the lowest......real close.

I think it might depend on the store - at my local Barnes & Noble, most of the boxed sets have a 10% off sticker pasted on the outside of the box (and it says members get another 10% off on top of that). A different B&N nearby did not have these stickers last year, but they do now.

Also - for people who figure out the price ahead of time : at my local store, if you buy something for $100, the cash register takes off the first ten percent, leaving $90, then takes the next ten percent off the $90, leaving $81, so it is more like a 19% discount, instead of 20%. It is no big deal, but if you are spending hundreds of dollars, it can throw off your math a little.

I saw the 48.28 price WAS there in the last couple of days - just changed so he must have picked it up then.

BN does adjust prices up and down over time. I have seen prices go up, then down, then down and then up again, ad infinum. Just what happens - so wait if you want to it may go back down and may go up. Not all their prices change like this - it only appears to happen to the ones you really want.

My local Barnes & Noble usually has a big stack of new releases, but since the sale started, they have only been getting in one copy of each new release (1 copy each of Moonlighting, Newsradio & Batman Animated 3, etc.).

They can order in another copy if you ask, or reserve the one copy they have on order for next weeks new releases (I had them reserve Lois & Clark and Wonder Woman 3 for me).

The clerk said he had never seen this before, and I asked him if they were only putting one copy out at a time to deter people from using the buy 2 get one free sale on box sets, and he said that was probably the reason.

So, if you are planning to use the sale to get boxed sets, you might want to call your B&N a few days ahead of time and ask them to hold or order the sets you want.

I ran to a couple B&N's today, looking for one that had 3 Criterion boxsets, but couldn't find out. One store said they could order them and have them shipped to me, but they were in a different county where the tax is higher. I'm gonna go out a little later tonight and have them order me 3 of the boxsets, and they should come out to about $45.93 each. Also, the $40 Criterions (if 2discs) come out to about $23.00 each, which is exactly what they'll be at the DDD sale (when and if it comes).

I'm gonna go ahead and pick up 3 boxsets and then 3 of the $40 retail ones since they're the same price and I won't be kicking myself if DDD doesn't do a sale this summer (and yes, I know someone posted a date, but it's a rumour until the codes are out).

I don't know how it works for pre-orders, but for the sets I ordered last night (1 in stock, 2 weren't), they charged me for all 3, and are going to ship the other two directly to my apartment from their warehouse. I was charged a small shipping charge for this as well ($3.97).

You can't pay in advance for items they do not have in stock. I tried this with the Star Trek Original series. They had Season 1 but not 2 or 3. But I ordered them on a Monday night and they were in the store by Wednesday afternoon. I got them yesterday along with a bunch of other stuff (15 box sets total).

I got the Star Trek sets for a total of $63ea plus tax which imo is the best price you will find for years (unless you find a price mistake).

This has got to be the best deal I've seen for a very long time.

Love this thread, and the fatwallet link which threw me for a pleasant loop, as I had no idea my AAA membership would be useful for something other than helping out of a jam when I locked the keys in my car (I know...DOH!).

By the way folks, if you have a AAA membership and take advantage of the buy 2 get 1 free deal, you should be a very happy camper if you purchase the Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Harry Potter boxed sets. With the offer going on and the additional AAA discount, it breaks down to $33.59 a set!! Safe to say you would be hard pressed to find any of the above sets for THAT good a price anywhere else (even if DDD held their infamous 20 percent sale tomorrow, the price per set would still not be as good as the one you can get from B&N). Even if you only want one of the above titles---eBay the rest of them, and you still can walk away from the deal happy.

I also picked up 6 sets of Combat for my mother (hard to beat a buy 6 pay for 4 deal).

Edited to add: Glad I took advantage of the deal on Sunday, I tried to pull the same trick today with different titles---but no dice. I added two $80 titles, then a third...which would show up as a freebie, to my cart, BUT the AAA discount for the other two titles would not go through...if I removed one of the three titles from my cart, the discount shows up, but of course the point of this trick is to get the AAA discount and the free dvd.

I wonder if my on-line account has been flagged, or if I was able to take advantage of a programming glitch that allowed to AAA discount to be stackable with the B2G1 Free deal. At least it looks like they are honoring the discounts I received with the three orders I placed during this deal.

Heck, I am not complaining, I was able to get two fairly hot box sets for 51 percent off retail, and a third for a bit more then 45 percent off retail...not bad, considering B&N is a mainstream e-tailer with established B&M stores, and I did not have to print out any coupons, worry about rebates, sign up for a club/membership, etc.

I'm not positive, but I believe since it is considered a box set you would get both the 10% off box sets discount, plus the 10% coupon, plus the 10% for the membership card (if you have one), and that would bring it closer to the 63.

I was the one to get them at that price. I see that you are in Fredrick MD. I work in Laurel and buy at the B&N in Bowie. If you want to arrange a meet there I will be happy to save you the price of the membership and buy them for you on my membership card.

P.S. I am thinking about getting all of the others too. I don't have any of the other three series and this would be a great time to get them with this sale going on. The only problem is that all 21 other seasons will run to about $1131.96 which is alot of money to lay out all at once but really means that they are only 53.90 (plus Tax) a season which is an incredible price for these set when you think that most people paid at least 100 each.

I was in one at lunch today (gaithersburg) and this guy kept talking to me and trying to sell me the membership, saying its linked to your phone number, and if you forget your card they just pop a phone number in and find you that way, or a girlfriend wants to use it and dont have a card, whatever. Just got a busy weekend and dont know how much its really gonna save me, driving out there. That trip would take me close to four hours round trip.

Dark this is stupid math. Why not tack 2 more onto your Borders order and 2 more on to your B&N order and see how the math works.

Obviously these are two different sales but ANYWHERE that you can buy 2 and get 1 free is better that buying 3 and getting 1 free if the prices are comparable.

I guess it varies by area. The prices at my B&N are consistently as good as or better than the ones at Borders, mainly due to the stackable coupons which are rarely found at Borders and always exist at B&N. At B&N you have 10% coupons for everyone, 10% for members, and 10% on all boxsets. You rarely have even a 10% off coupon at Borders, and the coupons such as the 25% one now can't be used with the offer. A couple examples:

Star Wars Trilogy
B&N: $70 - $7 boxset discount - $6 coupon - $5 member = $52
Borders: $65

Fear and Loathing Criterion
B&N: $40 - $4 coupon - $3 member = $33
Borders: $36

American History X
B&N: $15 - $1 coupon - $1 member = $13
Borders: $15

Note that even if you're not a member, the B&N prices still match or beat the Borders ones. I would have to search long and hard for a title that is better priced at Borders. Don't get me wrong, I love Borders (esp the 25% off coupon), but there is no doubt in my mind which of these 2 is the better deal.

For what the poster with the math breakdown had for selections (no box sets, presumably no membership), Borders beats B&N. It's not that big of a deal, but completely dismissing his example as "stupid" is just ignorant.

DVD182 is right. Discs that retail for 14.99 are either 10.99 or 12.99 at Borders. These same discs are 14.99 at B & N. This works out to 9.75 per disc at Borders and 10.00 per disc at B & N.

Discs that retail for 19.99 are typically 14.99 at Borders and 19.99 at B & N. This works out to 11.25 per disc at Borders and 12.00 per disc at B & N with the 10% off coupon and no membership.

Stuff like Criterions are definitely cheaper at B & N since you have to buy only 2 instead of 3 to get 1 free. 39.99 2 disc Criterions are 21.60 per set at B & N with multi-disc discount and 10% off coupon. 2 disc Criterions are 35.99 at Borders, but you have to buy 3 to get 1 free. That works out to 27.00 per set at Borders.

The above is assuming you get the most bang for your buck. Buying discs that are all the same price. However, this is assuming NO membership at B & N.

I was the same, thinking BN would still be higher until I started to run the numbers and compare against other online and B&M stores. In alot of cases, the BN 3 for 2 is cheaper than even DDD, IF you had no tax or even with the tax the price difference is pennies, $0.50 or maybe $1. Of course, other items are bigger differences, but it just depends. I look at them all and then decide if spending a little more at one place or the other is acceptable to me, especially when I can not find it anywhere else.

You need to be a member, but if you are then you get the 10percent off memeber, 10percent off coupon (expired tonight) 10 percent off any multi-disk over $40. So;

Criterion 2 disk = $40
Criterion 2 disk = $40
Box Set = $40===============

120-40= 80-8= 72-7.20= 64.80-6.40=58.40 divided by 3=$19.46

Besides what MScottM said, there are non-member coupons out there as well for 10% off total purchase.

I placed my order and got I Love Lucy 2, 3, and 4 (I bought S1 from DDD) for only like $27 each!! I'm glad I found the B+N thread because this is even cheaper than DDD. Also, B+N lowered their prices since last week. I also picked up The Lion King trilogy and it was only like $44 (before discounts) but last week it was marked $54! I'm happy, and if anyone is looking for good deals on Lucy and The Lion King set (which is out of print and I haven't see it at many stores anymore) then this sale is a good time to get it.

That is the only time that I have seen BN doing the B2G1 Free. This year they did it online as well for only selected DVD's (some in-store were available for the free one but they were not available online to be a free one.)
