Does the Nintendo DS have online capabilities?

i dont know anything about this handheld. Can you send emails? do online chats? what does it do wirelessly besides talk to other DS machines within a 50foot radius?

Online is starting up soon. Chat should work, as it already has a built in chat program that connects to DS's nearby, shouldn't be a stretch to expand that to online.

Not sure about web and e-mail, but I'd be shocked if they didn't come out with a program to allow that, the touch screen would be great for web surfing.

It is easier, and I see nothing wrong with it. Saves people time and those that don't liek to answer questions don't have to click on the threads.

Only time it's annoying is when it's a repost of a question that was asked and answered on the forum in another thread recently.

I saw on IGN that at E3 they were doing Voice over IP with DS's at E3. so it's definitely coming. I'm think once online games start coming out like Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, etc., they seem to really be pushing online and they'll be releasing an email/browser suite of some sort, maybe an updated pictochat too, i love that program everytime i borrow my friends DS. I used it to talk with some some other random people while waiting in line for starwars, it was pretty sweet. I'm getting a DS pretty soon.

Nintendo seems to be all over online so once they fully roll it out at the end of the year I would expect all kinds of things to utilize the Wi-Fi Online Nintendo service.

I don't see it happening, but then again playing a handheld online doesn't really interest me. I'd just like to see more games!!

How do you not see it happening when they announced officially at E3 their online WiFi plans for the DS?

Is there a list of games that will be online? Animal Crossing & Mario Golf/Tennis would be great online.

Animal Crossing, I believe, is the first online game slated to be released.

They mentioned Animal Crossing, Mario Kart and Tony Hawk at E3. Ultimate Brain and Card games is also supposed to be online, but I haven't seen a confirmation of that anywhere.

I got the impression that Nintendo was putting a lot of effort into their Wi-Fi online network and it sounds like now that they have it set up most of the games that go into development for the DS and Revolution from here on will take advantage of it.

that's cool, i didn't know that game had all that stuff in there, i wasn't interested in that game at first but it sounds like you can do a ton of stuff with it. I was talking about an actual VoIP app that they had at E3, it's called DSPeak and comes with an earpiece and microphone, and supposedly works just like regular VoIP, meaning free long distance calls at anywhere there's wifi.

Wait for a price drop and games to actually be released. I bought one before Xmas and it's a glorified GBA.

I agree, not much point in getting one now (I've had one since launch) UNLESS you don't have a GBASP.

If you don't have a GBA period, there's a ton of great games you can pick up, and if you only have the original GBA (no SP or GB Player) then it's worth picking up so you can actually see the games.

Otherwise, wait for some games like Castlevania, Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, etc. to roll out this year.

Why are you telling these idiots this. They should have already known by doing their own damn research. Enough with the questions in the forum. No more questions! Just statements. Like "I like Tetris. Discuss.", or "Nintendo makes the DS. Opinions?".

I've been eyeing quite a few games that are currently out (plus I always borrow my friend's DS when I'm at his place), and with Meteos coming out next month its tipping me over the fence. Plus I wouldn't mind getting the better screen for GBA games as well, the backwards compatibility is always a plus .

E3 definitely got me excited about the DS, they really had one of the best showings of all of the systems and there are tons of games that I am really looking forward to.

Without question the best showing I saw at E3. The lineup has been slim to this point, but I'm still playing Wario Ware Touched, Zoo Keeper, Puyo Pop and World Poker Tour. The GBA games like Zelda: Minish Cap and now Wario Ware Twisted have been much better though. So hopefully the DS lineup thats coming up will live up to the quality of some of the recent GBA games.

It is suprisingly good. I would give it a 7 out of 10. Never played any of the other versions, but from the reviews it is better than even the console versions. Lots of games, 4 different Casinos, Air Hockey, and 6 player multi on one cart. A decent job for a title I had no expectations for.

Although your review is good, I'd be surprised if they fixed the problems I had. If you can confirm they have fixed the problems below, maybe I'll give it another chance 2nd hand. I play a lot of poker so I expect something really good.

- The AI poker play is horrible, the computer doesn't know how to play and it shows.

- Stud, it doesn't show what other people have (or at least in a way that makes any sense) the 7 card stud is horribly programmed.

- No hi/lo games like Omaha hi lo or stud hi lo.

- The betting was all wacky, not very good. The game played poorly.

- The AI play is decent. It gets tougher and tougher as you go to each casino. They do weird things at times and the animation has nothing to do with bluffs which it probably should. It seemed okay to me, but I am not a gambling expert.

- Stud does show the opponents hold cards and seemed right to me, but again I'm not a guy that plays cards enough so I may misunderstand what you are saying.

- The games include:
Texas Hold 'Em
Double Flop
Pineapple
Omaha Hold 'Em
Omaha Hi-Lo
7 Card Stud
7 Card Hi-Lo
Baseball
5 Card Draw
Dueces Wild
Blackjack
also some Video Poker games, a dart mini game and a good air hockey table.

- Betting is a bit wacky. Some players are conservative and some will take more risks especially on the open.

Here is the Gamespot review with more info

You have me intrigued, looks like a sizable upgrade. How do they utilize the dual screen? Now a game like this would be very cool online.

The opponents and their cards are shown on the top screen and you manage your hand and betting on the bottom screen. Navigating the city and casinos shows the city and casino on the top screen and the map on the bottom. You can click things on the map to keep from walking all the way there.

It would be cool online. Maybe they will add that to next years version. It is fun as heck to play multiplayer and you can play all the poker games with a single cart. Granted you need people with DS units around you for that.
