It's great that FOX plays their Friday night movies in HD, but all of the commercials are teh suck.

Key questions I have:

1. Is Eyes dead even though ABC hardly gave it a chance?
2. Will FOX look beyond the ratings of Arrested Development and greenlight a 3rd year?
3. Is L&O-TBJ dead as is being reported today?
4. Where will Boston Legal go? Tuesdays at 10? Wednesdays at 10?
5. How many Lost and Desperate Housewives clones will there be?
6. Will we see more Alias-like (hold until mid-season and go with a straight run with no repeats/preemptions) scheduling?

As already indicated on the Arrested Development thread, Eonline "Kristin" is indicating that Arrested Development has been renewed for a full (22 episodes) third season and possibly fourth season.

Edit - Kristin not Wanda.

Key questions I have:

6. Will we see more Alias-like (hold until mid-season and go with a straight run with no repeats/preemptions) scheduling?

I would love to see this being done for "Lost". I think this show would play out better without the midseason interruptions. Very doubtful that ABC will do that :(

LorenzoL

Also in the "Kristin" article, it looks like "Jack and Bobby" is a goner and that "Jake in Progress" will be back:

You Don't Know Jack, and That's a Crying Shame: It's the best show people stupidly ignored this season, which is why it breaks my heart to tell you sources have confirmed Jack & Bobby is a goner.

Earlier this week, when I called J&B boss Greg Berlanti hoping for good news, he told me, "You're so sweet to be holding vigil. It's like day 14 of Terry Schiavo, and you're not giving up. No decision has been made yet, and we haven't been told. But as the clock ticks, I can tell you, it doesn't look good. The network has been so supportive. I think everyone's sort of scratching their heads as to why it's not doing better than it's doing, and everyone loves it and acknowledges that the acting is superb and there are great stories, but it may very well be our fate to join the ranks of My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks." That damn show. So good, it makes me cry nearly every week. And I swear I was all choked up by the end of Berlanti's call. (Yes, I'm that much of a sap and a fan.)

Still, please keep in mind that nothing is official yet. We'll get the final word on all the shows starting Monday in New York City, when the networks unveil their fall schedules. I will be in NYC every day this week on E! News at 7 p.m., bringing you the breaking news and, quite possibly, offering to have Peter Liguori's baby.

And even more good news--I just heard that my unrequited loverboy John Stamos will stay gainfully employed next season. Another rock-solid source tells me ABC has picked up Jake in Progress for 13 episodes.

Yep - no chance. They get decent enough ratings on the repeats, so they won't fuck with what has worked.

Then prepare to take out your anger.

Or hold out all hope like me. :)

The critics loved it and they are only going to give it a one month shot in an already crowded time slot? Give me a break - they have to give another try over the summer.

Lost would be PERFECT for the straight 24 episodes. Notice how since Lost has come back..its ratings has dropped? Too many things going on..people lose interest when they do not see a new episode for three weeks.

And somehow people aren't going to lose interest when they haven't seen a new episode for 8 months? Haven't Alias and 24 gone a little down in the ratings this season?

Alias has gone up in the ratings but that has something to do with Lost being its lead in.
However, 24 goes to a brand new night, loses American Idol as a lead in and still the ratings are higher than last year.

I think the reason why people complain about Lost and its scheduling is the break in between new episodes once the season starts. I think waiting until January will be a small price to pay to view the show uninterrupted until May.
However, as indicated above there's no chance of that happening.

now if abc runs alias on a night that is different from lost, will it still have the viewers of this season. (and didn't Garner sign a contract for the show running till at least 2008?)
and if the pregnancy rumors are in tact with garner, will they have to do a shortened season?

So what's the deal with "The Apprentice?" I thought the Martha Stewart version was going to replace The Donald on Thursdays. But Martha is scheduled for Wednesdays. Are we to assume The Donald is back for round 4 on Thursdays again?

Also, interesting move for West Wing. Sunday is the biggest night for TV. And since it's going to be a transition season, I'm wondering if NBC is grooming it for a longer stay.

I'd say just the opposite. I think they see E-Ring as the next West Wing and are thus putting it in the same timeslot. E-Ring is probably a better fit with Law & Order too.

NEW YORK (Zap2it.com) If desperate times call for desperate measures, NBC probably isn't desperate just yet. But the network isn't exactly comfortable either.
Hoping to shake off a slump that has seen the network drop to fourth place in the Nielsen rankings this season, NBC announced a 2005-06 schedule Monday (May 16) that includes six new shows and at least one schedule change on six of seven nights.

"We're very excited and encouraged by the lineup we're presenting today," NBC president Jeff Zucker says. "I'm confident that we have addressed our schedule needs and will continue to excel in drawing the advertiser-friendly, upscale viewers who have come to appreciate NBC's quality brand of programming."

The six new shows include one comedy, "My Name Is Earl"; two unscripted series, "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart" and "Three Wishes"; and three dramas, "Fathom," "E-Ring" and "Inconceivable." Notable among returning shows is "The Office," the critically hailed but ratings-challenged comedy that will get a second shot to find an audience, and "The West Wing," which moves to Sunday nights from its long-time Wednesday home.
The goal for 2005-06, according to NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly, is to "create real excitement, especially at 8 p.m., which will pay dividends throughout each night." Accordingly, a number of the changes NBC has made come in the early hours of primetime.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is what's not on the schedule: Veteran series "Scrubs" and "Fear Factor" won't debut in the fall, instead being held for "some point" later in the season. Additionally, as was speculated last week, "Law & Order: Trial by Jury" didn't survive for a second year, becoming the first "Law & Order" show not to have a multi-year run.

"Fathom," a sci fi-tinged drama about the discovery of a strange new life form under the sea, will fill the "Fear Factor" spot at 8 p.m. ET Mondays. "My Name Is Earl," a single-camera comedy about a petty crook (Jason Lee) who decides to right past wrongs after winning the lottery, moves into the "Scrubs" spot at 9 p.m. Tuesdays, sandwiched between "The Biggest Loser" and "The Office."

Wednesday undergoes a sizable makeover, with the Stewart version of "The Apprentice" taking the 8 p.m. spot and "E-Ring," a Pentagon-set drama that stars "Law & Order" alum Benjamin Bratt and Dennis Hopper, moving into "The West Wing's" old nine o'clock home. "Law & Order" remains at 10.

The Thursday lineup of "Joey," "Will & Grace," the Donald Trump "Apprentice" and "ER" remains intact. Fridays see more change, with the unscripted "Three Wishes," which aims to help people realize long-held dreams, at eight, "Dateline" moving back to nine and "Inconceivable," a drama about the staff of a fertility clinic, finishes the night at 10.

Saturday will revert back to a movie night instead of the "Law & Order" theater featured much of this season. The big Sunday change is "The West Wing," which goes to the tough 8 p.m. slot formerly occupied by the cancelled "American Dreams."

NBC has also ordered two new comedies for midseason -- "Four Kings," about four childhood friends who share a New York apartment, and "Thick and Thin," which stars Jessica Capshaw ("The Practice") as a woman adjusting to her new body after a dramatic weight loss.

E-Ring is the only thing that I will definitely catch.

But what the flippity-fuck are they holding Scrubs for!?! I don't care if My Name Is Earl is a Jason Lee vehicle. His recent spat of films have sucked, so I am not holding out much hope for a television show w/ him as the star. Quit screwing w/ Scrubs, NBC! Morans.

 on giving The Office another shot.

I can't imagine that Inconceivable show bettering what L&O:TBJ did in that slot. Something tells me we will be seeing L&O (take your pick of which) reruns in that slot by October.

I'm also hoping that "My Name Is Earl" is good.

The rest of the new NBC shows don't interest me that much. So Amy Grant has been reduced to being a reality show host.

BTW, did anybody else catch the promo for "The Inside" from Fox yesterday? They were running it during the Simpsons/Family Guy/American Dad block. It looks promising but then again is from Fox.

I'm really glad the Office stuck around :) It's too bad that Committed didn't get a second chance it was pretty funny but if I had to choose between The Office & Commiteed I would have chose The Office. I hope that NBC/Universal at least puts out Committed & Hawaii on DVD.

maybe they're keeping two shows they know are winners off the schedule (Scrubs & Fear Factor) ...in case some of their new ones fail ...they've got proven stuff to replace it versus starting a bunch of winners against everyone else's stuff and wait to see what happens and what can replace what and where....ok I'm done rambling..not that I typed that I'm not sure it makes sense ..

I was going to be upset about Scrubs not being on the schedule, but then I realized that with the crap NBC is shovelling out there, they'll have holes in their schedule by Week 3 of the season at the latest.

And NBC -- if you don't want the West Wing any more, just cancel it. Don't move it to a death slot.

I don't think Sunday at 8 is necessarily a death-slot. If they really wanted to kill it via scheduling, they could have moved it up an hour or put it on later Sunday night, or Friday.

Regardless, it does makes Sunday even stronger IMO.

As much as I hate the fact that Scrubs is being held off for a while, perhaps it will come in at the beginning of the year and we'll get a full, uninterrupted season.

E-Ring might be decent, 'though it doesn't sound like anything special. Nor does Fathom, or Inconceivable for that matter. Hopefully, they're full of surprises.

Also, very glad to see The Office coming back. And, while not great, Joey has managed to improve a good deal since it's debut, so here's hoping. "ER" is always a welcome part of my TV watching, and I just hope it manages to stay decent with it's recent loss.

My Name Is Earl has limited potential, much as I enjoy Jason Lee.

(Also, while I mourn the loss of "Committed", the star of the show (Josh Cooke - Nathan) will be on "Four Kings" as a title character. So, he's still on NBC, 'though how good the show will be is entirely questionable.)

I don't think Sunday at 8 is necessarily a death-slot. If they really wanted to kill it via scheduling, they could have moved it up an hour or put it on later Sunday night, or Friday.

Regardless, it does makes Sunday even stronger IMO.

Opposite Desperate Housewives, the Simpsons, and whatever HBO's got? It smells like a death slot to me.

Edit: Wait a minute -- is Desperate Housewives on at 8 or 9? Between the fact that prime time starts an hour earlier on Sundays and the fact that I TiVo everything anyway, I can never keep track of what's on when.

OK -- so I can TiVO West Wing and DH in one room, the Sunday night Fox lineup in another, catch the HBO shows when they re-air during the week, and tell my wife that she's not allowed to watch Extreme Makeover any more. Got it!

I'll wait until I see the actual schedule announcment tomorrow before I concede it is canned, but I agree. 8SR rebounded very nicely this season. I think it is better post-John Ritter than it was with John Ritter. It is one of the few comedies that is funny and watchable.

If this is accurate, then there is nothing I'm majorly hurt to see go. The only real disappointments for me are:

"tru calling"

And those were all pretty much a given.

There's still CBS, but everything I watch on there is pretty much a big ratings getter.

NBC's scheduling shows little continuity though it is better than before. They say they are doing bold things but I don't see it. There are only three new dramas and one is on Fridays. Their lone new comedy is asked to anchor Tuesdays at 8pm for an already weak The Office leadout. The Apprentice on back to back nights? They have holes everywhere but switching West Wing to Sunday against cold case, Extreme Makeover HE, and Simpsons (probably) during their transition season sounds precarious. I think Fear Factor is highly diluted due to syndication and Scrubs though very good is also a weak ratings cog. NBC IMO is where ABC was a few seasons ago when ABC relayed too much on Who wants to be a millionaire. This time, NBC is relaying too much on aging shows and the L&O franchise sans LO:TBJ. I don't think I will be watching too much of NBC.

FOX DOES MORE TIME WITH "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT," ORDERING A FULL THIRD SEASON

FOX gets ARRESTED again. The network has ordered a third full season of the Emmy Award-winning comedy series ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, it was announced today by Peter Liguori, President, Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company.

"ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is one of the best comedies on television. The decision to order another season becomes easy when you consider its amazing cast, creative brilliance, critical acclaim and advertiser appeal," said Liguori. "It's my first official pick-up since taking the job, and I think it's a great way to start."

The critically acclaimed series revolves around Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), the good son who must run the family business and continue to pick up the pieces as he keeps his offbeat family from falling apart. The comedy has featured guest appearances by numerous stars including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Liza Minnelli, Heather Graham and Ben Stiller. Last year, the show received five Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, Writing, Directing, Casting and Editing. Additionally, Jason Bateman won a Golden Globe for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role - Musical or Comedy Series and the show was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for Outstanding Musical or Comedy Series. This past season, the cast was nominated for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. The show was also named an AFI Program of the Year and received the Critics' Choice Award for Best Comedy, among other accolades.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is produced by Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox Television. Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, David Nevins and Mitch Hurwitz are executive producers

Well, that sounds pretty official to me.

I would suggest fans of AD write letters to FOX thanking them for renewing it. Given the poor ratings (in a decent timeslot), they certainly weren't compelled to do so. They probably only get letters in advance pleading for renewal and hate mail for cancelling cult hits.

NBC Execs Offer Postmortems for 'Dreams,' 'Jury'
(Monday, May 16 12:46 PM)
By Daniel Fienberg

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) When you've fallen from first place to fourth as quickly as NBC has, there will inevitably be casualties. Discussing the new fall schedule with reporters on Monday (May 16), NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly and NBC Universal President Jeff Zucker took some time to mourn the passing of several beloved and high profile failures.
Perhaps no show departing the airwaves will be as mourned by its fans as "American Dreams." Unfortunately, after three seasons of good faith from NBC, "Dreams" was only averaging 7.3 million viewers, an audience that didn't improve when the network temporarily moved it from Sunday to Wednesday. Even though Zucker was one of the period drama's most outspoken supporters, there just wasn't room for "Dreams" on a network trying to change directions.

"It just becomes, unfortunately, the contradiction of America, I guess," Reilly says. "People say they want quality, family-friendly shows at 8:00 and yet you put them on and what they really want to watch is 'Desperate Housewives.' Ultimately, we are in a business here. We love the show... It just was not pulling the ratings to really justify the cost of the show or to justify another year on the schedule."

As badly as "American Dreams" performed on Sundays, the heavily hyped "The Contender" drew an even smaller audience (which explains why NBC has transplanted Emmy-winning institution "The West Wing" to Sundays next fall). The boxing series, from industry heavyweights Mark Burnett and Jeffrey Katzenberg, weathered numerous delays and the tragic death of one of its contestants, but it was probably just knocked out by its subject matter.
"I think that at the end of the day, it was about boxing and that was a pretty high bar to get over," Zucker says.

Although its weekly audience has been sub-"Dreams," "The Contender" delivered stronger demographic numbers than its time slot predecessor and also produced a fervent base of young, male viewers.

"I think it was a damn good show," Reilly says. "I think they delivered on the show they pitched and the fans that watched it were very passionate about it and thought it was fantastic. I make no apologies for the quality of the show."

Another NBC show that wilted under the weight of high expectations was "Law & Order: Trial by Jury," the fourth permutation in the reliable Dick Wolf franchise. Averaging 11.2 million viewers in a slow Friday time period, "Trial by Jury" was one of the network's most surprisingly cancellations, but its departure reflects on the network's diminished status.

"'Law & Order: Trial By Jury' was ordered last year while we were still the No. 1 network," Reilly explains. "In that kind of environment, it felt like we could sustain four 'Law & Orders.' This spring, we find ourselves in a different situation and it really looked like we needed to open up some more time periods for some new shows."

Readers will have to check back next May to see if those new shows -- including "Inconceivable" and "Fathom" -- have fared any better.

As I said before, I think TBJ was more deserving of renewal than CI. It won its timeslot about half the time. My prediction is that the replacement for TBJ will do no better in that slot and will be quickly canned.

Re: American Dreams, I guess I can smile at the fact that The Contender (which got a tremendous amount of hype) did worse than AD. Plus, just think if The Contender aired during football season - nobody would have watched it. I'm upset at NBC for not giving the producers a heads up that they were cancelling AD because the ending was terrible for the fans of the series - even worse than Enterprise.

I think AD's biggest problem is that most people watch a single episode and go "wtf is this?". The show takes a few episodes to get the feel down, and to appreciate all that is going on and the references. When you do - gold. When you don't - you don't like it. It took me about 5-6 episodes to really appreciate the show. Now - this and Scrubs are my two favorite comedies.

Although I gave up on Medical Investigation mid-season, I was surprised that NBC had canceled it. Wasn't that supposed to be a modest hit? It did not have huge ratings, but I thought for its timeslot it was doing rather well. I seem to recall NBC saying it was their highest rated new drama this year (which admittedly isn't saying much.) It seems weird to pull it to put on an another unproven medical drama.

Speaking of which, the description for that Inconceivable show just made me laugh. A drama about a fertility clinic? I might tune in just to see how they do it. It will probably suck, but maybe on the off chance it could be cool a la Nip/tuck.

Yeah - I'm guessing they expect every show to pull in LOST and Desperate Housewives numbers. Really too bad about Eyes, but I don't know what they expected putting it in the old Karen Sisco slot against CSI:NY and Law & Order. It should have been on Sundays at 10 where the terminally ill, infinitely inferior Grey's Anatomy is in residence.

Here's ABC

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) It's been quite a year at ABC. Mired deep in fourth in most key measures last year at this time, the network has posted what it describes as the largest season-to-season audience growth for any major network in the coveted adult 18-49 demographic in at least 25 years. However, not content to continue along the same path, ABC has shaken up its schedule from top to bottom for next season.

Coming off a year that saw ABC land fresh breakout hits from "Desperate Housewives" to "Lost" to "Grey's Anatomy," the network is prepared to launch three new dramas and two new comedies this fall, with even more new programming on tap for midseason. In addition, the network is shifting around many of its most popular and established shows, looking for footholds on new nights and in new time periods, with only Sunday night (and the Saturday movie) remaining stable.

"Through strong development and strategic marketing, we were able to make valuable strides this season. Our responsibility next season and beyond is to continue that forward movement," says ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson. "We're grateful to all of the people at ABC, as well as those in the creative community who are contributing to our promising first steps."

Viewers may need to seek out such favorites as "Boston Legal" (now on Tuesday) and "Alias" (running the lead leg on what ABC hopes will be a vital Thursday), but ABC has set up familiar buffers for most of its new offerings. On the comedy side, ABC's fresh fall will include "Freddie" and "Hot Properties," while "Commander-in-Chief," "Invasion" and "The Night Stalker" are the new dramas.

ABC's week will kick off on Mondays with "Wife Swap" leading into the network's final season of "Monday Night Football." When the pigskin action comes to its close, "The Bachelor" will return in the 8 p.m. ET time period, followed by the Heather Graham comedy "Emily's Reasons Why Not," and the returning single-camera comedy "Jake in Progress." The John Stamos comedy was one of ABC's most surprising renewal. The night will conclude with "What About Brian," a J.J. Abrams-created dramedy starring Barry Watson and the only one of three pilots from the "Lost" creator to make ABC's roster.

"According to Jim" and "Rodney" move up an hour to kick-start ABC's Tuesday. Instead of more comedy, though, ABC will shift gears with Geena Davis in the female president drama "Commander-in-Chief" at 9 p.m. and "Boston Legal" in its new 10 p.m. home.

On Wednesday, ABC is moving the desert island smash "Lost" down to 9 p.m., starting the night with new comedies, returning bubble show "George Lopez" and "Freddie," which aims to make a sitcom star out of Freddie Prinze Jr. "Lost" will take the middle of the night, providing a compatible lead-in of "Invasion," an alien-based drama that McPherson describes simply as "spectacular."

For the third year in a row, "Alias" finds itself in a new home, joining the tight battle on Thursday night at 8 p.m. The action show, which will have to deal with star Jennifer Garner's reported pregnancy, will set up "The Night Stalker," an update of the 1970s supernatural series, which had a strong cult fanbase. The night will close with "Primetime Live."

After several seasons of attempting to rejuvenate TGIF comedies on Friday night, ABC is turning over the evening's first hour to the not-so-funny reality series "Supernanny." Returning comedy "Hope & Faith" is one of the few shows in ABC's entire schedule to remain in its home from last year, setting up the real estate half-hour "Hot Properties." The 10 p.m. hour goes to "20/20."

ABC is remaining true to the movie-of-the-week on Saturday.

The network will also hold on to the Sunday lineup that has gone from struggling to unstoppable in recent months. From "America's Home Videos" to "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" to returning hits "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy" (now ordered for a full season of 22 episodes), ABC can count on closing its week strong.

Including the Monday post-football shows, ABC has already ordered a whopping seven shows, with three comedies, three dramas and one alternative program.

Figures once they finally got some people to watch Alais they'd move it-ohbfrank-

For all the good things ABC did this season: Lost, DH, Boston Legal, and Grey's Anatomy, it was almost matched by its bad things: cancelling 8 Simple Rules, putting life as we know it in no-chance timeslot and then moving it directly against a show with the same exact demographic (The O.C.), and never even giving its best new show, Eyes, a chance. Fuckers.I couldn't have said it better myself.

They've got some of my favorite babes in their new shows: Obradors, Gail O'Grady, Sophia Vergara, and Julie Ann Emrey.

And someone at the network must be tired of Jennifer Garner and Alias, because the only move that could possibly be worse than what they just did would be to move it to Friday or Saturday night - eh, maybe not, it's pretty much fucked where it is.

I'd say that move will be the death nail for Alias. Competing against Joey and Survivor, and it doesn't have the Lost lead-in. Anybody know if they are planning on doing the same thing they did last season with Alias and wait until January to start?

Yeah, things look bad for Alias :(. It's kinda amazing to see it reach a fifth season though after even its first season put it on the bubble. I do hope it goes out with a great season.

As for Wednesdays, it will be interesting to see if Invasion is any good. I would love to see another Sci-fi show on a major network. Unfortunately, it will probably be cancelled within weeks.

I think moving Lost to 9 pm is a brilliant move. It gives them a great lead-in for Invasion to take on the juggernauts at 10 pm. Too bad they didn't give Eyes that kind of lead-in. -rolleyes-
I don't know. I think you could have an episode of Lost where the entire hour is a 3-way with Kate, Shannon, and Claire and that wouldn't help a sci-fi show going up against those 2.

Maybe not, but with Lost at 9, they could put anything in the 10 pm slot and probably do better ratings there than they have in years. The question is how lofty will ABC's expectations be for Invasion. Very high I would imagine since they apparently expected Eyes to be a force with a mediocre-poor lead-in vs 2 established hits.

I'm interested in some of the shows, but the scheduling baffles me. Sucks about Alias. Not just because it's a death slot, but also because it'll make Thursday a three shows at once slot. Same deal with Night Stalker, which is one of the few new shows announced that actually sounds interesting to me. I realize they think they have a shot at making a run for Thursday, with Joey not being the major ratings powerhouse Friends was, Will & Grace in its last season, and Apprentice starting to stumble. They're also probably predicting that CSI will start to weaken soon. But unless they made a major move, like send Desperate Housewives or Lost to that night, I just don't see it happening.

Invasion has piqued my interest, but I'm highly skeptical it'll actually be any good (or be good for the long run). But then again, I thought the same thing about Lost and that turned out well.

Red Dog
05-17-05, 12:12 PM
I don't believe they think they have a shot on Thursdays at all. Alias is not a particularly strong show to begin with, ratings-wise, so there is no reason to believe that a shift to Thursday is an indication that ABC thinks they can make inroads there.

Jadzia
05-17-05, 12:12 PM
So did ABC drop "Extreme Makeover"? The plastic surgery one, not the home edition one. I didn't see it on the schedule. I always found it funny that the spin-off show was much more popular than the original show.

I guess when any of these shows get cancelled they'll also stick in more "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition-- How'd They Do That?" episodes.

I think it is smart to move Supernanny to an 8pm slot. That seems to be a popular show for families to watch.

Agreed that Alias is now dead. For everything ABC did right this season, they certainly did not learn any lessons did they? They would be better off putting Alias on Wed at 8pm, before Lost. Then use Lost as the lead-in to the 10 pm show.

I'll keep watching because of 1) Erica Durance, 2) I'm a glutton for punishment, and 3) I can record 4 things at once. Plus Thursday at 8 still isn't an issue for me: Survivor, S'ville, and The O.C. and I am close to dropping The O.C. (writing as bad as Smallville this season).

Is the WB trying to kill Everwood? How is Smallville even a good lead-in for that show? It would make more sense paired with Gilmore Girls, but I guess they want to use that slot to pimp Jared Padalecki's new show. (How funny that his brother's character is named Dean!) And wouldn't a show called SUPERNATURAL (real clever title BTW) make more sense following Charmed?

Honestly, I couldn't even finish the descriptions of any of those new WB shows; they all sound boring as hell to me.

* "Invasion." Sci-fi hourlong, from writer Shaun Cassidy (“American Gothic,” “The Agency,” “Cold Case,” “The Mountain”), about a small town secretly plagued by extraterrestrial body snatchers. It stars Eddie Cibrian (“Third Watch”), Kari Matchett (“5ive Days to Midnight”), Ariel Gade (“Envy”), Evan Peters (“Sleepover”), Tyler Labine (“My Boss’s Daughter”), William Fichtner (“Crash”), Liz Sheridan (“Seinfeld”), and Aisha Hinds (“The Shield”).

* "The Night Stalker." Supernatural thriller, from writer-director Frank Spotnitz (“The X-Files”), about a journalist named Carl Kolchak who believes his wife’s murder is tied to forces of the uncanny. It stars Stuart Townsent (“League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”), Gabrielle Union (“Bring It On”), Cotter Smith (“X2”) and Eric Jungman (“Not Another Teen Movie”).
__________

I'll be eager to sample these two for sure. Invasion's premise sounds like a million other shows, but I'm willing to give any Shaun Cassidy show a trial run after American Gothic, and I like Fichtner & Cibrian... Stuart Townsend should make a great Kolchak if the writing is up to par.

I think it was decided years ago this would be the last season of Smallville. There's not much more they can do with that show. Up to last year, it was their highest rated show next to 7th Heaven, so I'm up for any schedule that can get more people to watch Everwood, which is one of a couple shows that isnt considered stale and actually gets better each year. Never got a chance to see much of Jack and Bobby so I hope it fits in somewhere, and what happened to Summerland?

As for ABC's bonehead decisions at least it's nice to see at least one network not relying heavily on reality shows.

I am very surprised (and happy) they renewed "Less Than Perfect". I assume it probably has to do with making it look nicer for syndication.

I don't watch Everwood (although I probably will if some cable network gets the syndi rights), but from what I understand, it is basically a soap. That's only because when you have bad sci-fi writing, it just looks that much worse than bad writing based more on reality. One thing you can't say about Smallville writers - they did not take a great character and run him into the ground this season.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) The cast and crew behind "Joan of Arcadia" and "Judging Amy" may be on pins and needles on Wednesday (May 18) morning when CBS announces its fall schedule to advertisers. With the top-rated network on the verge of picking up a slew of dramas, both popular shows may be on the verge of slipping off the bubble.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS is said to be leaning toward at least eight new shows, including five dramas, a figure that makes it highly unlikely that both "Joan" and "Amy" will be back. However, CBS didn't want "Yes, Dear" last fall, but after returning at midseason, the oft-maligned comedy did well enough that it looks likely to get a renewal along with fellow comedy "Still Standing" and the midseason drama "NUMB3RS."

The list of pickups begins with Jerry Bruckheimer's female-centric legal procedural "American Crime," which shouldn't be surprising given how much of CBS' schedule Bruckheimer already controls. The master of the event movie and the small screen has also secured series pickups from NBC and The WB in the past two days.

"Crime" would be joined by two military/intelligence-based procedurals in "Quantico" and "The Unit" (headed for midseason, apparently). CBS is also said to be making goo-goo eyes at two supernatural projects, "Threshold" and the Jennifer Love Hewitt drama currently known as "Ghost Whisperer."
Jenna Elfman's comedy "Everything I Know About Men" is looking strong and the trades report that the buzz is good for "Flesh and Blood," about a family of doctors, starring Henry Winkler and Stockard Channing. The other comedy slot could go to the flashback series "How I Met Your Mother," with Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan, though Julia Louis-Dreyfus' "Old Christine" may be ordered for midseason.

On any other network, "Joan of Arcadia" and "Judging Amy" would probably be safe. "Joan" picked up an outstanding drama series Emmy nomination for its first season, but its audience has dwindled, averaging around 7.96 million viewers this season on Fridays. "Judging Amy" has remained solid on Tuesdays, attracting 10.57 million viewers per episode. If CBS executives felt that some of the newly developed dramas might skew younger, though, one or both of the shows may be cancelled.

This is a familiar strategy for CBS. Last spring, the network cancelled "The Guardian," even though the legal drama earned consistently respectable ratings. The network was convinced that "Clubhouse" would draw a more demographically attractive crowd. Instead, the bat boy drama tanked. Proving that CBS' karma was still good, though, the network inserted two installments of "The Amazing Race" in Tuesday slot and ended up getting exactly the young audience it desired.

More info about Commander-in-Chief:
Davis stars with Donald Sutherland in "Commander-in-Chief." She assumes the presidency with twin teenagers and a 6-year-old at home, and a party that wants her to resign rather than take over for a dying president.

Ugh. Sounds like a bad Disney movie premise. Despising Geena Davis won't help either. :thmbsdwn:

"Joan of Arcadia" and "Judging Amy" have been cancelled per USAToday website tonight. I'm VERY sad to see "Joan" go, just when it ended the season on such an intriguing note. Of course, seeing Wentworth Miller in the ads for "Prison Break" led me to believe he knew he wouldn't be going back to "Joan". . .but I was still holding out hope. Times like these, I want to never watch and get attached to any new shows. . .

That's what I thought too based on the article that I posted yesterday. I believed that Joan of Arcadia was the more vulnerable of the two since Judging Amy was still bringing decent numbers on Tuesday nights.

Maybe CBS decided to go with new shows.

I can see why they canned Amy. It peaked long ago. Of course, cancelling such a show almost bit them in the ass last year when they canned well-performing The Guardian in favor of Clubhouse. Clubhouse lasted 3 weeks. Fortunately, they were bailed out in that timeslot by TAR.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Through May 15, CBS' season-to-date margin-of-victory over second place ABC is nearly three million viewers, the largest by any network at this point in the season in 16 years. Despite that advantage, CBS' schedule for the 2005-06 season features some heavy tinkering, with several Emmy winners and established hits replaced by six new hopefuls.

Of CBS' bubble shows, "NUMB3RS," "Still Standing" and "Yes, Dear" all earned renewals, while the network did away with long-running hit "Judging Amy" and buzz-to-bust second-year drama "Joan of Arcadia" among other shows. Instead, four new dramas and two new comedies are set for the fall, with Friday and Monday getting the largest overhauls.

The departure of "Everybody Loves Raymond" leaves CBS' Monday a bit vulnerable, but the network decided to move an old friend back to the night. "The King of Queens" is back from Wednesdays, kicking things off at 8 p.m. ET and setting up the flashback comedy "How I Met Your Mother," which brings TV favorites Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan back to the small screen. As expected, "Two and a Half Men" will move "Raymond's" old 9 p.m. home, serving as a launchboard for "Out of Practice" (formerly known as "Flesh and Blood"), an ensemble medical family comedy featuring Henry Winkler and Stockard Channing. "CSI: Miami" will continue to anchor the night.

Tuesday begins with some stability for CBS. "NCIS" has even held up against competition from "American Idol" and should return strong in the fall as a lead-in to the latest series of "The Amazing Race," which achieved its highest ratings yet this past installment. A female-centric legal drama is scheduled for 10 p.m., but instead of "Judging Amy," it's "Close to Home" (formerly "American Crime") from CBS' personal savior Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Jennifer Finnigan.

CBS will start Wednesday with a comedy block of "Still Standing" and "Yes, Dear," before moving into "Criminal Minds" (formerly "Quantico"). The network hopes that the FBI procedural, which stars Mandy Patinkin and Thomas Gibson, will provide a better lead-in for "CSI: NY" at 10 p.m. than an assortment of comedies did this year.

Given that CBS has come to dominate NBC's once-impenetrable Thursday fortress, it's no surprise that nothing will chance. The new "Survivor" -- this one set in Guatemala -- will set up "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," which will flow into "Without a Trace."

Friday starts with "Ghost Whisperer," CBS' equivalent of NBC's "Medium," a supernatural-themed drama about a newlywed (Jennifer Love Hewitt) who can talk to the dead. Keeping with the trend, the alien drama "Threshold" is scheduled for 9 p.m., with "NUMB3RS" sticking around at 10.

Both Saturdays and Sundays will also remain unchanged. CBS will continue to air a pair of crime procedural encores for the first two primetime hours, followed by "48 Hours Mystery" on Saturday. The venerable newsmagazine "60 Minutes" will still lead off on Sunday, with "Cold Case" and an assortment of original and theatrical movies to follow.

CBS has also picked up one drama and one comedy for midseason.

Descriptions of the new Fox shows:

2005-2006 FOX PRIMETIME SCHEDULE
NEW SERIES SYNOPSES

The following new dramas will premiere on FOX this fall:

PRISON BREAK (Monday, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT): MICHAEL SCOFIELD (Wentworth Miller, "The Human Stain") is a desperate man in a desperate situation. His brother, LINCOLN BURROWS (Dominic Purcell, "John Doe," "Blade: Trinity"), is on death row and scheduled to die in a few months for a murder Michael is convinced Lincoln did not commit. With no other options and time winding down, Michael holds up a bank to get himself incarcerated alongside his brother in Fox River State Penitentiary. Once he's inside, we learn that Michael – a structural engineer with the blueprints for the prison – has hatched an elaborate plan to break Lincoln out and prove his innocence. Senior correctional officer BELLICK (Wade Williams, "Collateral") offers some prison wisdom as Michael arrives. Then, with the help of his cellmate, SUCRE (Amaury Nolasco, "Mr. 3000"), Michael begins to align himself with a disparate group of prisoners, including former mob boss JOHN ABRUZZI (Peter Stormare, "Fargo," "Minority Report") and CHARLES WESTMORELAND (Muse Watson, "I Know What You Did Last Summer"), a man some believe to be the infamous skyjacker D.B. Cooper. On the outside Michael has only one ally, his defense attorney and longtime friend, VERONICA DONOVAN (Robin Tunney, "The Craft," "End of Days") – who is Lincoln's former girlfriend. Meanwhile, Lincoln's 15-year-old son, LJ (Marshall Allman), is now adrift without his Uncle Michael's positive influence. Rounding out the cast are Sarah Wayne Callies ("The Celestine Prophesy") as prison doctor SARA TANCREDI, whom Michael ends up visiting more often than he should, and Stacy Keach ("Titus," "Mike Hammer") as the powerful WARDEN POPE, who forges a close, almost father-son relationship with the new convict. This intriguing new series promises to reveal additional pieces of the puzzle each week as Michael carries out his daring plan to mastermind the ultimate PRISON BREAK – and solve the far-reaching national-scale conspiracy that landed him there in the first place.

WRITER: Paul Scheuring
DIRECTOR: Brett Ratner

GUEST CAST: Stacy Keach as Warden Pope, Muse Watson as Westmoreland

BONES (Tuesday, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT): From executive producers Barry Josephson ("Hide and Seek," "Like Mike") and Hart Hanson ("Joan of Arcadia," "Judging Amy") comes the darkly amusing drama BONES, inspired by real-life forensic anthropologist and novelist Kathy Reichs. Forensic anthropologist DR. TEMPERANCE BRENNAN (Emily Deschanel, "Boogeyman"), who works at the Jeffersonian Institution and writes novels as a sideline, has an uncanny ability to read clues left behind in a victim's bones. Consequently, law enforcement calls her in to assist with murder investigations when the remains are so badly decomposed, burned or destroyed that the standard identification methods are useless. Brennan's equally brilliant colleagues at the Jeffersonian's Medico-Legal Lab include earthy and bawdy ANGELA MONTENEGRO (Michaela Conlin, "The D.A."), who's created a unique way to render an original crime scene in a three-dimensional computer image; Brennan's assistant, ZACK ADDY (Eric Millegan), a young prodigy whose genius IQ actually gets in the way of his finishing the several doctorates he has begun; "the bug guy," DR. JACK HODGINS (TJ Thyne, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"), who's an expert on insects, spores and minerals, but conspiracy is his hobby; and Brennan's boss, imposing lab director DR. DANIEL GOODMAN (Jonathan Adams, "American Dreams"). Brennan often finds herself teamed with Special Agent SEELEY BOOTH (David Boreanaz, "Angel"), a former Army sniper who mistrusts science and scientists when it comes to solving crimes. Brennan and Booth clash both professionally and personally, but so far the chemistry between them has only played out in a fictionalized account in Brennan's latest mystery novel.

PRODUCTION COMPANY: 20th Century Fox Television
EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS: Barry Josephson, Hart Hanson
WRITER: Hart Hanson
DIRECTOR: Greg Yaitanes
CAST: Emily Deschanel as Brennan, David Boreanaz as Booth, Eric Millegan as Zack, TJ Thyne as Dr. Hodgins, Michaela Conlin as Angela, Jonathan Adams as Dr. Goodman

HEAD CASES (Wednesday, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT): Bill Chais ("The Practice," "Family Law") created this comedic drama starring Chris O'Donnell ("Scent of a Woman") as attorney JASON PAYNE, whose superstar career at a prestigious Los Angeles law firm backfired when his wife, LAURIE (Krista Allen, "Unscripted"), kicked him out of the house and, to make a bad day even worse, he had a nervous breakdown. After three months at a "wellness center," Jason found himself with no job, no place to live and no support system. Enter SHULTZ (Adam Goldberg, "A Beautiful Mind," "Saving Private Ryan"), an unkempt, unpredictable sufferer of explosive disorder, assigned to be outpatient "buddies" with Jason by their mutual therapist, DR. ROBINSON (Rockmond Dunbar, "Soul Food"). A low-rent lawyer who usually represents deviants and petty criminals, Shultz eagerly latches onto a very reluctant Jason, inserting himself in all aspects of Jason's personal and professional life. The intrusion is the last thing Jason needs, preoccupied as he is with trying to re-establish a relationship with his 8-year-old son, RYAN (Jake Cherry, "Miracle Run"), reach some kind of accord with Laurie, and lend emotional support to KATE (Rachel Leigh Cook, "She's All That"), a troubled young woman he met at the wellness center. For Jason and Shultz, what begins as a bumpy alliance gradually turns amicable as each helps steer the other toward against-all-odds legal victories. Ultimately, they hang up their shingle together and set out to take on underdog clients while attempting to keep each other "sane."

PRODUCTION COMPANY: 20th Century Fox Television
EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS: Bill Chais, Jeff Rake, Barry Josephson
WRITER: Bill Chais
DIRECTOR: Andy Fleming
CAST: Chris O'Donnell as Jason, Adam Goldberg as Shultz, Krista Allen as Laurie, Jake Cherry as Ryan, Rachel Leigh Cook as Kate, Rockmond Dunbar as Dr. Robinson

REUNION (Thursday, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT): Part character drama and part mystery, REUNION marks a groundbreaking concept in series television as it chronicles the lives of a group of six friends over the course of 20 years – all in just one season. From the hopes and dreams of 18-year-olds to the realities that irrevocably mark those lives two decades later, REUNION's stories are of love and loss, marriage and death, triumph and scandal. WILL (Will Estes, "U-571," "American Dreams") longs to leave his small town behind. Aided by an athletic scholarship, he will be the first in his family to go to college. CRAIG (Sean Faris, "Life As We Know It"), handsome and privileged, looks forward to the Ivy League with his girlfriend, SAMANTHA (Alexa Davalos, "The Chronicles of Riddick"), whose ambition is surpassed only by her looks and intelligence. The beautiful and sensual JENNA (Amanda Righetti, THE O.C.) dreams of becoming an actress; behind his cynicism, AARON (Dave Annable, "Little Black Book") dreams that his relationship with Jenna will go beyond friendship. CARLA (Chyler Leigh, "Not Another Teen Movie"), innocent and quirky, must choose between loyalty to her father and staying near her best friends. REUNION opens in 2005 at the funeral of one of the friends, whose death is being investigated by DETECTIVE MARJORINO (Mathew St. Patrick, "Six Feet Under"). Before the identity of the deceased is revealed, we're transported back to 1986, as the group is celebrating their high school graduation. The pilot episode follows all six through the summer of 1986, and we witness the formative events that alter their dreams and desires forever. Episode two finds the group a full year later, in 1987; episode three tells the story of a seminal event in 1988, and so on – culminating in the season finale at the friends' 20th high school reunion. REUNION also will build toward answering two important questions raised in episode one: Which of the friends is dead? And how did that death occur?

PRODUCTION COMPANIES: Warner Bros. Television, Class IV Productions
EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS: Jon Harmon Feldman, Steve Pearlman, Andrew Plotkin
WRITER: Jon Harmon Feldman
DIRECTOR: Jon Amiel
CAST: Will Estes as Will, Sean Faris as Craig, Dave Annable as Aaron, Alexa Davalos as Samantha, Amanda Righetti as Jenna, Chyler Leigh as Carla, Mathew St. Patrick as Detective Marjorino

THE GATE (working title) (Friday,, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT): Created by Josh Berman ("CSI: Crime Scene Investigation"), THE GATE (working title) tells the chilling stories of bizarre crimes committed by San Francisco's most aberrant criminals. The series centers on Detective GRAHAM HALE (Johnny Messner, THE O.C.) of the San Francisco Police Department's Deviant Crime Unit. Intense and private, Hale is haunted by personal demons, and he chose this assignment after going AWOL for a year following his partner's death in the line of duty. Hale's new partner is rookie Detective AVA LYFORD (Marguerite Moreau, "Life As We Know It," THE O.C.), whose no-nonsense demeanor and by-the-book tenacity hide both her insecurities and her secrets. Unbeknownst to Hale, she has a hidden agenda – and it might lead to his downfall. In the course of investigating his cases, Hale works closely with his boss, the likable Lieutenant MATT CAVANAUGH (Chi McBride, "Boston Public," "The Terminal"), and with DR. FRANCINE KLEPP, a forensic pathologist in the Coroner's lab and the former roommate of Hale's late partner, Meg. Exploring the idea that "behind every monster there's a mystery," the stories of THE GATE remind us that the "monsters" are everyday people, hidden in plain sight – and that, in each of us, a monster may lurk just beneath the surface.

PRODUCTION COMPANY: Regency Television
EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS: Russel Friend, Garrett Lerner
WRITER: Josh Berman
DIRECTOR: Rob Lieberman
CAST: Johnny Messner as Det. Graham Hale, Marguerite Moreau as Det. Ava Lyford, Chi McBride as Lt. Matt Cavanaugh

The following new comedies will join the FOX schedule this fall:

THE WAR AT HOME (Sunday, 8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT): When DAVE (Michael Rapaport, "Hitch," "Small Time Crooks," "Boston Public") and VICKY (Anita Barone, "Daddio," "The Jeff Foxworthy Show") were growing up, their parents had it easy. Back then, there were no "time-outs," no one had any "boundaries" and "parenting" wasn't even a word. Parents also had no idea what their kids were really up to; ignorance truly was bliss. Now Dave and Vicky have teenagers of their own, and anything their kids might even think about doing, Dave and Vicky have already done … at least twice. But knowledge isn't power – it's a giant pain! Every day is a battle to keep the kids in line. Fifteen-year-old LARRY (Kyle Sullivan, MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE) isn't exactly a frequent diner at the cool kids' table in the cafeteria, while 16-year-old HILLARY (Kaylee Defer, QUINTUPLETS, "Listen Up") knows it all and is just emerging onto the dating scene. Meanwhile, at 13, MIKE (Dean Collins, "Jack & Bobby") is all hormones and video games. Dave and Vicky figure if they can send these three off to college without a police record or kids of their own, they've done their job. This witty, irreverent show from Rob Lotterstein ("Will & Grace," "Ellen," "Dream On") goes inside the heads of a modern family through the use of a confessional space where the characters reveal everything they could never actually say to one another – as they do their best to win THE WAR AT HOME.

KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL (Monday, 8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT): Based on renowned chef Anthony Bourdain's best-selling autobiography, KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL explores the deliciously crazy world of upscale restaurants. Chef JACK BOURDAIN (Bradley Cooper, "Alias," "I Want to Marry Ryan Banks") found enormous success at a young age, but his culinary genius also led to a lifestyle of boozing, womanizing and drugs. After hitting rock bottom and deciding to sober up, the only job he could get was slopping soggy pasta for the masses at a tacky opera-themed restaurant. Out of the blue, Jack is offered an opportunity to get back in the game as head chef at a top New York restaurant. There's just one problem: the owner gives Jack a mere 48 hours to fully staff his kitchen and prepare to dazzle over 300 customers – including the food critic for the New York Times (who also happens to be a jilted ex). Jack hastily assembles a renegade crew of colleagues from his past, including chefs STEVEN DAEDALUS (Owain Yeoman, "Troy"), SETH KLEIN (Nicholas Brendon, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") and TEDDY WONG (John Cho, "Harold & Kumar"). Also along for the ride are TANYA (Jaime King, "White Chicks," "Pearl Harbor") the hostess, a rookie pastry chef named JIM (John F. Daley, "Freaks and Geeks"), and the owner's daughter, the gorgeous MIMI (Bonnie Somerville, "NYPD Blue"), who can't wait for Jack to fail. In KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL, executive producers Darren Star ("Sex and the City") and David Hemingson ("Just Shoot Me," AMERICAN DAD) expose the secrets of the restaurant business through the delectable story of a talented chef who's determined to climb back to the top of the food game.

The following two comedies are scheduled to premiere in January and beyond on FOX:

THE LOOP (Wednesday, 9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT): As we reach our early 20s and face the daunting challenges of real life, there are those who choose to embark on a career path and those who'd rather goof off with pals. And then, every so often, there's someone who sets out to do both. Set in Chicago, THE LOOP is the story of SAM (Bret Harrison, "Grounded for Life"), the youngest executive at the corporate headquarters of a major airline, and the first of his friends to get a real job. He must find a way to straddle his serious career and the serious social demands of his roommates. One roommate, SULLY (Eric Christian Olsen, "Dumb and Dumberer," "Tru Calling"), is Sam's older and rowdier brother, whose casual attempts to hold down a series of odd jobs are eclipsed by his attempts to land women. The other roommate, PIPER, is a medical student, Sam's college pal and – unbeknownst to her – his longtime crush. As Sam strives to meet the relentless demands of his boss, RUSS (Philip Baker Hall, "Seinfeld," "Bruce Almighty"), dodge the nonstop advances of his colleague, MERYL (Mimi Rogers, "Austin Powers," "Hope and Faith"), and turn his best-friendship with Piper into romance, he is, by turns, ambitious, exhausted and inspired. Moreover, he is a hero for everyone who has ever tried to work hard and play hard at the same time.

CAST: Bret Harrison as Sam, Eric Christian Olsen as Sully, Philip Baker Hall as Russ, Joy Osmanski as Darcy, Mimi Rogers as Meryl

FREE BIRDS (Midseason): A partially improvised comedy project from writer/director Rob Roy Thomas ("Significant Others") and Fox 21, FREE BIRDS is about former Big Man on?Campus NATE SAWBOROUGH (Josh Dean). College in California is over, all he did was party, and a dejected Nate finds himself in a situation he never imagined: returning to his small?Midwestern hometown to move back in with his parents. But his mom and dad's marriage is in trouble and his room has been turned into a gym. The good news is that Nate is able to reconnect with local beauty and bank teller AMBER CREEKHOUSE (Erin Cahill, "American Dreams"); the bad news is she's newly engaged. He also meets up with former High School Big Man On Campus MARK DOVE (Dave Sheridan), and it's time to hit the wild parties ... or as wild as they get in a small Midwestern town. Will Nate decide to move back to California, or will he suppress his small-town phobia and make a play for Amber before she ties the knot? PRODUCTION COMPANY: Fox 21

I guess this means we'll have a full season of Arrested Development without repeats to be completed by January?

 The show works better that way. I think it is a good slot for it too, although I'm sure AD fans will find something about it to lash out at FOX. ;)

Except for Bones, the FOX dramas sound pretty good - at least on paper.

You're missing out on Veronica Mars if you dismiss UPN. Pick up this week's Time.

I think my only conflict at this point is OC/Smallville/Alias on Thursdays. Bye Clark!

Weird that Wednesday nights will now be a dead zone for me - that's been a crowded day for me going back to when GG was on Weds.

Even moreso than dismissing UPN, I'm even happier to dismiss my UPN affiliate. Although I'm less than 20 miles from their tower, their HD signal isn't strong enough for me to pick up (no problems with any other channel). They splash all kinds of local adverts across the screen and run their channel blurbs into the beginning of each show segment. They bump UPN shows for local high school football games. Those are just a few examples.

Now that Enterprise is done, I'm happy to wash my hands of them entirely. :)

Yeah - the UPN HD signal is extremely weak in DC (and Baltimore) too. Broadcast a real signal, and then maybe I will consider watching a show.

Glad to see I am not the only one who can't get a UPN HD signal for shit.

Most of those shows sound decent, particularly Prison Break and Reunion. I think I will end up passing on Bones and The Gate, but I will give them a shot for a week or two before I completely dismiss them.

UPN schedule:

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) UPN's new schedule, announced on Thursday (May 19) features a new injection of star power and an aggressive comedy move on Thursday night.

In its ongoing battle with The WB for fifth, UPN has moved "WWE Smackdown!" off of Thursdays and cancelled the heavily hyped freshman drama "Kevin Hill," aiming for new offerings featuring Chris Rock, Shannen Doherty and Denis Richards. The netlet has also made the under-watched, but critically adored drama "Veronica Mars" the beneficiary of its strongest launching pad.

As usual, UPN's week begins with a Monday comedy block, powered by "One on One" at 8 p.m. ET. "All of Us" moves to the 8:30 slot from Tuesday night, as "Girlfriends" and "Half & Half" stay in their familiar homes.

UPN will start Tuesday with "Sex, Lies & Secrets," an ensemble drama featuring Richards and the prolific Eric Balfour ("Hawaii"). Encores of "America's Next Top Model" will be allowed to tread water in the tough 9 p.m. hour.

New episodes of "America's Next Top Model" will stay on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m., where the dramality modeling series has become the defining show in UPN's reach for young female viewers. After a difficult season on Tuesdays, "Veronica Mars" gets the coveted post-"Model" spot, a home the network hopes might bring its audience up to the same level as its cult buzz.

Although the Thursday wrestling block was a UPN institution, the netlet has decided to go after what it seems as an untapped comedy market, starting with "Everybody Loves Chris," narrated by Rock and based on his experiences as a teenager in Brooklyn in the early '80s. "Eve" takes the 8:30 slot, followed by "Cuts," earning a second season. Another new comedy, "Love, Inc.," anchors the night, featuring television favorites Shannen Doherty and Holly Robinson Peete.

"WWE Smackdown!" will now dominate Friday, where its testosterone-driven antics will draw familiar ratings without tainting the rest of UPN's schedule.

As if the profiles of Rock, Richards and Doherty weren't high enough, UPN has ordered "South Beach," from executive producer Jennifer Lopez, for midseason.

NEW COMEDIES (all times ET/PT):

EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS (Thursday, 8:00-8:30 PM) is inspired by the childhood experiences of comedian Chris Rock, who narrates the hilarious, touching story of a teenager growing up as the eldest of three children in Brooklyn, New York during the early 1980's. Uprooted to a new neighborhood and bused to a predominantly white middle school two-hours away by his strict, hard-working parents, Chris struggles to find his place while keeping his siblings in line at home and surmounting the challenges of junior high. This responsible, resilient adolescent brings a distinct, funny spin to his everyday trials and traumas. The single-camera comedy series stars Tichina Arnold ("Big Momma's House") as Rochelle, Terry Crews ("White Chicks") as Julius, Tyler Williams as Chris, Tequan Richmond ("Ray") as Drew, Imani Hakim as Tonya, and Vincent Martella ("Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo") as Greg. EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS is a production of Chris Rock Enterprises, Inc. in association with Paramount Network Television. Chris Rock ("Head of State"), Ali LeRoi ("Head of State"), Howard Gewirtz ("Oliver Beene"), Michael Rotenberg ("The Chris Rock Show") and Dave Becky ("The Hugleys") are executive producers.

LOVE, INC. (Thursday, 9:30-10:00 PM) follows Denise Johnson, an energetic, pragmatic young woman who takes pride in her success as a full-service dating consultant. As the female version of a "wingman," this savvy matchmaker and her quirky co-workers help lovelorn single men, and even women, present the best image possible to just the right prospects. Skilled at helping her clients find their seemingly unattainable soulmates, Denise continues to grapple with her inability to find one herself. The series stars Shannen Doherty ("Charmed") as Denise, Reagan Gomez-Preston ("Beauty Shop") as Francine, Vince Vieluf ("Grind") as Barry, Ion Overman ("General Hospital") as Viviana, and Holly Robinson Peete ("For Your Love") as Clea. LOVE, INC. is a production of Chase TV, The Littlefield Company and Burg/Koules in association with Paramount Network Television. Adam Chase ("Friends"), Warren Littlefield ("Keen Eddie") and Mark Burg & Oren Koules ("Two and a Half Men") are executive producers. Writer Andrew Secunda ("Late Night with Conan O'Brien") is a co-executive producer.

SEX, LIES & SECRETS (Tuesday, 9:00-10:00 PM), set in the small, hip neighborhood of Silver Lake, on the outskirts of Hollywood, is a fresh, edgy new drama that explores the intimate and often complex relationships of a tight-knit group of friends finding out who they are and what they want in life. These twenty-somethings have become a family sharing everything, but as in any family, the need to protect each other can often compel these friends to keep secrets that sometimes do more harm than good. The new drama stars Denise Richards ("Scary Movie 3") as Jolene, Eric Balfour ("Six Feet Under") as Charlie, Lauren German ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre") as Rose, Omar Miller ("Shall We Dance") as Coop, Tamara Taylor ("Diary of a Mad Black Woman") as Nina, and James Stevenson ("Hope and Faith") as Hank. SEX, LIES & SECRETS is produced by Axelrod/Edwards Company in association with Paramount Network Television. Jonathan Axelrod, Kelly Edwards and Daniel Cerone ("Clubhouse") are executive producers. Michael Gans & Richard Register ("Celebrity Deathmatch") are co-executive producers and writers.

MID-SEASON DRAMA:

SOUTH BEACH (Day/Time TBD) revolves around Matt and Vince, best friends filled with aspirations of a better future, as they abandon their world as they know it and head to the alluring paradise of sandy beaches, beautiful people and hot spots in glamorous South Beach. Matt's preoccupation with his old, fashion-model girlfriend has him diving head first into her thrilling new life, even though she has moved on, and Vince, willing to do anything to get ahead, uncovers the dangerous and possibly seedy underbelly of SOUTH BEACH. The series stars Marcus Coloma ("Point Pleasant") as Matt, Chris Johnson ("xXx: State of the Union") as Vincent, Lee Thompson Young ("Friday Night Lights") as Ian, and Vanessa L. Williams ("Johnson Family Vacation") as Elizabeth. SOUTH BEACH is produced by Nuyorican Productions and Flame Television in association with Paramount Network Television. Tony Krantz ("The Bad Girl's Guide"), Jennifer Lopez ("Monster-in-Law"), Simon Fields ("Shall We Dance?") and Philip Levens ("Smallville") are executive producers.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Last May, FOX presented an ambitious 12-month schedule that left many reporters scratching their heads and many advertisers equally perplexed.
There was a summer of fresh scripted dramas and comedies that mostly failed (how we miss you, "The Jury" and "Method & Red"), followed by a fall of reality shows that mostly tanked (nobody particularly misses you, "Next Great Champ" and "My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss"). By the time the baseball playoffs were finished and 2005 rolled around, FOX's season looked doomed. Then came "American Idol." The talent show returned without skipping a ratings beat, rejuvenating everything around it. Suddenly it's May and FOX is on the verge of winning the season among adults 18-49 and finishing in a tight pack with NBC and ABC in total viewers.

In the hopes of maintaining position, FOX's 2005-06 schedule, released on Thursday (May 19) is a simpler affair. Although several reality shows and at least one scripted drama (the revamped "The Inside") are airing over the summer, none of them will carry into the fall. FOX is launching one schedule before baseball, carrying that to January and then overhauling the beginning of the week to take advantage of "Idol" and another uninterrupted season of "24."

"The key to our schedule really is stability and balance -- the stability of bringing back a lot of returning series on all seven nights of the week and balance between cutting edge dramas, innovative comedies, engaging, but audience and advertiser-friendly unscripted series, and, of course, big sporting events," says Peter Liguori, recently installed as the network's entertainment president after Gail Berman's abrupt departure.
Because of NBC's Olympics coverage last summer, FOX was unable to use late August and early September as a launching pad for scripted shows, hence the over-reliance on reality. This season, the network hopes that an early start will let several shows get footholds, permitting FOX to enjoy the solid baseball ratings without exiting the World Series crippled. Liguori explains that a series like "Prison Break," a heavily serialized drama that chronicles a penitentiary escape over the course of a season, will get to air at least seven times pre-baseball.

"This will allow us to give shows time to find an audience in a less crowded environment and will allow the audience to develop viewing patterns before we preempt for baseball in October," explains the former FX chief.

Another stability strategy employed at FOX has been the decision to build shows around recent guest stars from the network's shows, or perhaps to insert series hopefuls into established shows. Friday night drama "The Gate," for example, features Johnny Messner and Marguerite Moreau, who both just finished stints on "The O.C." and Chi McBride, last seen on "House." "Prison Break" lead Dominic Purcell (a veteran of FOX's "John Doe") made appearances on "House" and "North Shore," while "Reunion" co-stars Amanda Righetti and Chyler Leigh spent time on "North Shore."

"We're always on the prowl for who we think will be breakout stars," Liguori says. "Those are examples of actors we have tremendous confidence in, we think there's great audience appeal. It's certainly a situation where someone you know is always better than someone you don't."

Even the network's midseason options fit into the stability mode. Rather than loading up on scripted fill-ins, FOX will save new episodes of established reality franchises "Nanny 911" and "Trading Spouses" for next year. In addition, the January schedule shifts may leave FOX with fresh episodes of "Kitchen Confidential," "Arrested Development" and "Head Cases" on the shelf, ready for a rainy day.

"We have no doubt there's a big target on our back," Liguori tells reporters. "We don't know what it's like to be No. 1, but we certainly know that people are gunning for us."

Thoughts on the Fox announcement:

If they actually do a full season of Arrested Development and just get it done by Idol time, this will be a good move for Fox. I don't think they really take the ratings seriously until January anyway. This way they can keep the goodwill of airing the show without worrying about it being a low spot among the Idol-fueled second half. The Monday move doesn't bother me so much.

They also have placed their two most interesting new shows (IMO) on that night and they'll be ending the season in January as well. Prison Break has a great premise, but I don't see how they can make a long term show out of it. Kitchen Confidential has a meh premise to me, but seeing as it features Nicholas Brendon and John Cho, who I think are great, and the eye candy of Jaime King, I'll definitely be giving it a chance.

Kind of a gutsy move to shift House around in the middle of the season, although back-to-back House and 24 works great for me.

Bones is the worst sounding of Fox's new dramas, yet they're giving it the biggest push. Sounds like yet another twist on the whole procedural show. People talk about reality shows being run into the ground all the time, but I wonder when the bottom is going to fall out of this genre? I still love CSI and whatnot, but how many of these shows can people take?

Friday is totally schizophrenic. Bernie Mac and Malcolm might not be a terrible idea, if they are going for that TGIF family block vibe. But them they follow up with The Gate, "the chilling stories of bizarre crimes committed by San Francisco's most aberrant criminals". WTF? What could have been an interesting move to actually make a mark on Friday and carve out a niche instead looks like the typical Fox Friday death order.

The finale for Smallville this season will keep me watching next year. Thankfully, there is no WB affiliate in my area, so the UPN affiliate plays the WB shows, usually at 10 and I think on the weekends as well.

glad to see 24 is doing a nonstop season again next year

I like the move of Smackdown to Friday. I was upset when Alias was moved, but now with Smackdown on Friday, that's no longer a concern. Beyond that, Friday is such a wasteland that Smackdown should fare well.

CRIMINAL MINDS (Wednesday, 9:00 PM) stars Emmy and Tony Award winner Mandy Patinkin ("Chicago Hope"), Thomas Gibson ("Dharma & Greg") and Daytime Emmy Award winner Shemar Moore ("The Young and the Restless") in a suspense thriller about an elite squad of FBI profilers who analyze the country's most twisted criminal minds, anticipating their next move before they strike again. Each member of the team brings their own area of expertise to the table as they pinpoint predators' motivations and identify their emotional triggers in order to stop them. Matthew Gubler ("The Life Aquatic") and Lola Glaudini ("The Sopranos") also star. Mark Gordon ("The Day After Tomorrow," "Grey's Anatomy") and Ed Bernero ("Third Watch") are executive producers, and Jeff Davis and Deborah Spera ("Fathers and Sons") are co-executive producers for Touchstone Television in association with Paramount Network Television.

You know, I liked this show the first time I saw it, when it was called The Handler.. Lola Glaudini was in it the first time too.

Doesn't sound like The Handler to me (except for the FBI part), but regardless, it sounds lame.

Upfronts 2005: The Pilots that Didn't Make the Cut
(Friday, May 20 01:46 PM)
By Daniel Fienberg

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) It was only weeks ago that industry insiders were buzzing about Alicia Silverstone's FOX pilot "Queen Bee," while NBC looked ready to walk the beat with a 1970s-set cop drama based on the same real-life drug bust as "The French Connection." ABC was stoked to have the "thirtysomething" team of Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz chronicling twentysomethings with "1/4life," while Bill Lawrence's ("Scrubs") "Nobody's Watching" was going to revolutionize The WB's comedy line-up.
William Goldman's classic Hollywood maxim that nobody knows anything goes moreso for pilot season buzz, where nearly every available actor, writer and director in town is attached to something and every show is a potential classic until schedules are announced.

There's no way of knowing why pilots don't get picked up. The easiest explanation would just be that an idea that sounded great in a pitch meeting became a repugnant waste of time on tape. But sometimes a network might blanch at the potentially high cost of series production. Sometimes a network's relationship with a certain production studio might sour because of negotiations over an existing series.

No amount of star power can save a doomed pilot. At CBS alone, established film and television stars like John Leguizamo, Sally Field and Eric La Salle ("Conviction"), Dylan McDermott ("3 Lbs."), Jeri Ryan and David Arquette ("Commuters") and James Van Der Beek ("Three") couldn't stick.
Some discarded pilots may be reconsidered, reimagined or recast and still find homes as midseason replacements. (NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly admitted that "The Book of Daniel," for example, contained many elements that the network really liked.) Others are probably dead forever. (Reilly glibly noted that nobody will hear from the Janeane Garofalo poker comedy "All In" ever again.)

One of the most entertaining subplots of this pilot season was monitoring the attempt by former "Beverly Hills, 90210" stars and featured players from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" (commonly known as the Whedon-verse) to make it back on the small screen.

Now that the dust has settled, it's clear that the Whedon-verse won big. While "90210" vets like Brian Austin Green (ABC's "Freddie"), Lindsey Price (The WB's "Pepper Dennis") and Shannen Doherty (UPN's "Love, Inc.") found network homes, some of seminal FOX soap's biggest stars -- Jason Priestley (CBS' "Love Monkey"), Luke Perry (FOX's "Ticket to Ride") and Tiffani Thiessen (CBS' "Stroller Wars") -- are looking for work again.

Meanwhile, networks landed placements for such "Buffy" vets as Nicholas Brendon (FOX's "Kitchen Confidential"), Alyson Hannigan (CBS' "How I Met Your Mother") and Seth Green (NBC's "Four Kings") and for "Angel" favorites David Boreanaz (FOX's "Bones"), Amy Acker (CBS' "The Unit") and Christian Kane (CBS' "Close to Home").

Here's a glance at some of the other higher-profile rejections from this pilot season:

"Pros and Cons" and "The Catch" (ABC, dramas): "Lost" and "Alias" will be back again next fall and ABC has ordered "What About Brian" for midseason, but rumors that J.J. Abrams was prepared to take over the network appear to have been greatly exaggerated. Given the number of different permutations that "The Catch," a bounty hunter drama starring Abrams' buddy Greg Grunberg, has already taken, it wouldn't be surprising to see it resurface some day, but for now, Abrams will have to be satisfied with mini-domination at ABC.

"The Prince" (The WB, drama): Did Greg Berlanti do something mean to WB Entertainment President David Janollari? "Jack & Bobby" is gone. "Everwood" has been shipped off to face "CSI" on Thursday. And "The Prince," a buzzworthy pilot (also executive produced by Matt LeBlanc) starring Tim Matheson and Mariel Hemingway, didn't make the cut.

"Halley's Comet" (The WB, drama): It used to be that if David E. Kelley told your network he wanted to do a show, he didn't even need to shoot a pilot. Then again, that's how CBS ended up with "The Brotherhood of Poland, NH." The trades suggested that this medical drama was still in the running until the last minute, but Kelley's name couldn't put it over the top.

"Hitched" (FOX, drama): This Aaron Spelling-produced drama set in a full-service Las Vegas wedding chapel may not have necessarily sounded like a great idea, but with co-stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar ("Saved by the Bell") and Tara Reid ("Saved by the Bell: The New Class") it was going to be fun to eternally call this one "Saved by the Wedding Bell." In other pilot news, Lark Voorhies remains unemployed.

"New Car Smell" (FOX, comedy): The cast -- Brooke Shields, Christopher McDonald and Dave Attell -- was intriguing. The creative team -- "Lucky" brothers Robb and Mark Cullen and "Friends" star David Schwimmer -- was reliable. Who knows what went wrong?

"Goody's" (NBC, comedy): The idea of Dick Wolf producing a comedy for the network must have seemed like a good idea at some point. However, it probably sounded less good when star Vincent Pastore ("The Sopranos") was charged with allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

"Early Bird" (NBC, comedy): Everybody kept describing this series, about a young man who gets fired from his dream job as a TV writer and moves into a retirement community, as "Golden Girls"-esque. When did you last hear a comedy called "Golden Girls"-esque? And when did any network last attempt to program to viewers outside of the 18-49 age range? Well, it won't happen this fall either.

"Crazy" and "The Studio" (UPN, dramas): Yes, UPN is trying to be all about women these days, but high-profile pilots starring Lara Flynn Boyle and Gina Gershon probably became less viable when the netlet decided to stand by "Veronica Mars."

Here's what I don't get. Why do the networks have to stick to their schedules after announcing them in May?

Why can't they change things once they see what the other networks have done?

Surely some of them must want to swap one of their Thursday 8PM shows with something since there is SO MUCH competition in that slot now...

Shannen Doherty was fired from her new show already:lol:

MISS MATCH: In a move that will shock absolutely no one, sources confirm that UPN has dropped Shannen Doherty as the star of its new fall sitcom, Love, Inc. The former 90210/Charmed diva — who just last week was flown to New York and paraded before advertisers at the network's upfront presentation — was to have played a savvy matchmaker whose own love life left something to be desired. UPN isn't commenting, but an industry source says Doherty was a casualty of bad research, adding, "Preview audiences were not responding to her." The role will be recast. Meanwhile, Alyssa Milano, stop your snickering!

I guess I'm not the only one who noticed it, the premise sounds very familar to that Alicia Silverstone series that ran for a little bit.

Question for anyone...do you guys know if some of these pilots that don't get picked up maybe get recycled or retooled slightly and get pitched again for networks to consider? Or, if it fails to get picked up then it just fails forever?

You hear it once in a while, they get delayed for midseason, and sometimes you hear about a failed pilot that was made from the past year's season, but they never make it or are just there to fill time, because you couldnt pick up a pilot older than a few months because it would be impossible to get the whole cast together again to film new shows.
They'd have to have a new cast. I think in syndication I've seen it happen. That John Woo show, Once a Thief had a movie for a tv pilot and 2 years after it was made there was a series with the same characters but some different actors.

The network called "Trio" (www.triotv.com) has aired "failed" (I think they were all failed) pilot episodes in the past ..but I'm not sure how often they do it, or how old the pilot episodes are..I believe they're all former NBC failed shows as it's a NBC channel.

http://www.trioplus.tv/plus/bbc_2/index.html (they currently have 4 failed pilots..) they called them "BBC" ..Brilliant But Cancelled
