View Full Version : Idea of a modification for the spoiler tag

I was reading the other spoiler suspension thread and someone brought up something that bothers me as well, which is when people post spoilers in a thread a lot of times they're not very good about posting what the spoiler is <b>about</b>, so you get in the habit of just highlighting all the spoilers for an episode that has aired that night and in the process you see something about the last episode (or whatever).

I think it'd be useful to alter the spoiler tag like the quote tag:

[<a></a>spoiler=the episode after next]Bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla[/spoiler]

And then it would display as

Spoilers for <b>the episode after next</b>:
Bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla

Only if it's automated some how.

It's enough of a pain to type the spoiler tags as is, asking me to put a title on them is a bit much.

I understand the need for spoiler tags, but I think some people are getting a bit extreme about using those things (no offense).

I'd like to see the spoiler tags shorter like replace spoiler with with something like sp.

But I know this isn't Burger King and I can't have it my way...

Indeed. I get the need for them in some cases, but people wanting them used in dated threads for TV shows or for threads discussing a movie post release are just annoying.

The common sense thing is to stay out of the those threads until you've seen the show or movie if you're not interested in reading or discussing spoilers. Otherwise there's nothing else but stupid padding "can't wait" posts.

Eh, just an idea. Obviously most people don't care one way or the other.

but part of the reason people spoiler tag so much is because there are some members who go off on rampages at the slightest untagged thing

And those people just need to stay out of threads where spoiler material will clearly be discussed.

Tags are useful for things like movie reviews etc when people just want to know if the movie is good or not before seeing it, but nothing should have to be spoilered in threads like dated TV episode threads etc where it's clear that one shouldn't read it until after watching the episode if they don't want to chance things being spoiled.

Otherwise there's nothing else but stupid padding "can't wait" posts.I know this is unrealistic because of the moderation involved, but I like the Television without Pity approach where a thread is started listing the show, episode title, and airdate, and then the thread is closed until after the episode finishes airing on the East coast. That keeps the signal to noise ratio a lot stronger.

Yeah, that would be a good idea, but like you said not feasible.

It seems like the signal to noise ratio is improving. But the signal is largely "spoilers" with the promos being discussed and thus bringing in more noise from people who don't want to see spoilers who are not smart enough to stay out of the dated episode threads until seeing the episode.

You keep saying that, but is this really a problem? It's hard for me to tell, because I rarely enter a thread until after it's aired; but it's been a while since I've seen someone get really upset over legitimate dated discussion. I could be wrong on that, though, because I'm behind on some popular shows and consequently haven't been in their threads for a while. Still, it seems what inspired this discussion was the people discussing plot points for one show in the thread of another <i>different</i> show. If a thread is dated, you're correct: people need to have enough sense to stay out of it (who is saying otherwise?). If it's some other show entirely, however, they have no warning without tags.

See last weeks Lost thread. I don't think it's the common, but there's a good page of bickering about promo spoilers.

And it was that thread that led to the spoiler thread here in feedback.

As for who was saying otherwise, the couple of people complaining in that thread were (though whaat relented and said he'd stay out of them in the future).

He said he liked the community and "can't wait" type posts but didn't want to see the promo spoilers. But then he read the spoiler rules thread and said he'd just stay out of the dated threads in the future.

Oh, OK. I'm 2 episodes behind on <i>Lost</i>, so I missed that. I saw the <i>Alias</i> thread where people were arguing that it was OK to talk about <i>Lost</i> plots inside there, with which I completely disagree, and assumed that's what spawned some of the discussion (in addition to the potential <i>Amazing Race</i> spoilers). However, I completely agree, and believe is official TV Talk policy, that dated threads are your warning, and you need to have enough sense to read the date and stay out.

The real controversy lately hasn't been people going into Movie threads, etc. It's people spoiling the end of reality shows without tags, before the finale airs. Which really doesn't relate to BWG's suggestion.

A lot of people were upset when somebody put, untagged, that Sam and Dana won this season's Amazing Race...even though the finale isn't until Tuesday.

See Das, there's another case of someone whining about spoilers in a dated episode thread. :D

I posted a reply explaining that it had already been covered and that spoiler tags aren't necesary in a dated thread after it airs.

Not a bad idea, but I could see it being missused like

My problem was a recent thread regarding Danny the Dog and whether or not it was cut for it's US release. Then someone just started talking about the movie and spoiled it for someone else. It wasn't a review thread, it wasn't about the plot, just whether or not the movie was cut. Spoiler tags are great for threads like that.
