What have I learned from this? Crab = Cash, Pain and Death.
And lots of each.
Really good show, nice to see some "real" reality TV... knew it'd only be a matter of time before contestants got killed. (Alright I know it isn't exactly how it sounds, but it's true no less).

I really like this show, although I need to find out what time they air other than at midnight on a Sunday. The last two Mondays I've been late to work because I'm up 'til 1:00 am watching crab fishing.

I like it. It's interesting to see how much is at stake whenever these guys go out to sea.
One minor gripe though, for some reason Bon Jovi's "Blaze of glory" doesn't really fit the show, at least to me it doesn't.

I've watched a few episodes(wednesdays?) and enjoy it. Sounds like the crab season is just 80 hours long now. Oh yeah, I always get a little hungry looking at all those crab legs.

Where did they pull out all those money numbers in the beginning?
Before the show started they had ads that said $140,000 for 5 days work. Then when the show started they dropped it to $50,000. Now the highest paid out of the ships they followed for the king crab season was $15,000 per deckhand and I think they were the only ship that hit 5 figures a person.

Actually one ship had a payout of $30k to deckhands. The figure is all based on haul, I would guess that if the biggest ship got their max crabs in the most expensive season (I do not know which crab season is the richest) then deckhands could earn the $115k.
I asked this same question in the other Deadliest Catch thread.

First run eps are on Tuesdays at 9pm EST, at 8pm they show last weeks ep again.
Keep in mind the $$$ paid out was VERY LOW because the season was 3 days. Its very hard to do really well in that short amount of time.
This is truly one of the most dangerous jobs around. In college I had the opportunity to go out and do this to pay for school. I went to several meetings about it and talked to folks who had done it and families of those whose loved ones didn't come back. For me the risk was greater than the reward and I just couldn't do it. However one person I knew that did it made enough money in a 3 month stretch to cover his entire 4 years of college.(about 75K) so he went once and that was it for him.
He told me it was the worst experience of his life but also taught him what he was capable of and not capable of.
Interesting show overall.

It is a fun show, but I get tired of the never ending teaser "coming up, disaster, pain and death, and somebody doesn't come back...." and then the next break they say the same thing, and at the end of the show they say the same thing about the next episode.
But it is a fun show to watch. I wouldn't do it for that money, especially if you were a greenhorn.

In the first documentary that Discovery did last year they said Greenhorns got a percentage of the haul. Albeit smaller than the "full share" deckhands. But now they say that they just get $200 a day? They're doing most of the labor, grunt work, not to mention risking their lives for measly $200 a day?!
