The theater was packed when I went to the 7:00pm showing of H2G2 yesterday. I was suprised to see that many people there, but I'm certainly not suprised now to see that it's #1.

XXX2 is going to be seen as a pretty big bomb if it can't pass $15m or so for the weekend, most of the analysts were saying closer to $25 million. Ice Cube not so hot? (Ba-da-bump!)

I think Hitchiker will be like a Star Trek movie. Big numbers on the first weekend as all the geeks come out to see it, then a huge drop off.

A little surprised about XXX2 (I hope Interpreter makes more money this weekend than it does), but the reviews were terrible and the movie looks pretty bad (I kinda liked the first XXX, butI have no desire to see this one at all).

Kinda sad to see Sin City drop so fast.

I don't know. I know a lot of people that went that didn't know anything about Hitchhiker's Guide and certainly weren't Sci-Fi fans. They all seemed to like it too, which suprised me.

Sucks that Kung Fu Hustle is falling hard.

Sucks that Sin City fell hard.

I enjoyed H2G2, and am glad it's #1 over the trite that is XXX2.

That said, I think it (H2G2) will have legs - most non-fans seemed to get a good kick out of the movie, and most that I've spoken with enjoyed it a good deal.

Plus, it's a PG-rated Comedy, if they open big they're almost guaranteed to have reasonable legs.

Anybody notice the poster for XXXX.
That they don't show Ice-Cube as the star.
There's one poster that just shows a city and the other is a side view of Ice-Cube, but you can't tell who he is.
Why would the producers hire Ice Cube as the star and then not have his mug in the posters?

Interesting. Hollywood sucks at investing their money.

Kinda sad to see Sin City drop so fast.

It's been out for a little while though hasn't it?

I saw it when I was out of town for the final 4

Kinda sad to see Sin City drop so fast.

It came out a month ago, and it's already made more than Kill Bill 1 & 2, which were the two movies most people were comparing it's gross to.

Why does everyone abbreviate it H2G2? Shouldn't it be HG2G?

I was wondering the same thing...

Says who?

A 43% drop for Kung Fu Hustle from last week gross is steep no matter how you look at it.

Plus it only made $13 million plus in over 2240 theatres so far. The numbers are not good.

Why does everyone abbreviate it H2G2?
The title The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is often abbreviated as "HHG", "HHGG", "HHGTTG" or "H2G2".

Note on spelling: Unfortunately, the different editions of the Hitchhiker's Guide spell it differently -- thus "Hitch-Hiker's Guide", "Hitch Hiker's Guide" and "Hitchhiker's Guide" are used in different editions (US or UK), versions (audio or text) and compilations of the book.

Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy

H twice G twice, hope this helps.

Beat me to the punch,i was trying to figure this out myself.I guess abbrevitations don't neccesarily have to make sense ala D*=Directv.

Edit: H2G2 makes a little more sense now thanks to Mikeporter.

An obscure, mass-audience-unfriendly, subtitled martial arts comedy, from a company that specializes in singles and doubles?

They might have been praying for more, but I’m thinking Sony Classics is pretty happy with the turnout so far.

Very true. I know Vin Diesel isn't exactly an A-list star but he does bring in bank.

Thanks, a quick Google search after I posted this question revealed the answer, although you summed it up much better.

I would agree, I read the books and saw the movied this weekend... I was pretty disappointed in it. I will drop over 50% next weekend. Also any family cross-over I doubt will happen, I took my son who is 7 and he didn't understand any of it... he did like the robot(which is why he wanted to go) and the song thanks for all the fish. I always thought this movie would be better animated like Shrek anyway.
