View Full Version : Who could have been a better voice for Grievous?

Seems like they just decided to go with a no-name voice actor on the crew (Michael Wood). Given how Grievous is portrayed on screen as more or less a clutz (since I doubt most will have seen the Clone Wars cartoon or read LOE), I guess it's okay.

If they wanted to give him more of a personality, I wish they had either stuck with Gary Oldman or even the suggested replacement of John-Rhys Davis.

Other suggestions:

Christopher Walken- a great cameo player
Robert DeNiro
Macho Man Randy Savage- why not? Make him sound like a real tough guy!

Havnig not heard the performance or seen the film can't say I could really judge it at all.

I guess the obvious choice though would be Gary Oldman, since he was going to do it until that SAG thing.

I really don't know who would be better having not heard the current voice ... but I don't see anything wrong with the choice being someone you've never heard of. I'd rather think "That's General Grievous" as opposed to "That's Christopher Walken."

Yep. The most annoying thing about animated movies of the past 20 years or so is the use of the star of the week for character voices. Every time I watch Shrek I think "Fat Bastard"...and Disney has been even worse.

I recently had a chance to hear Matt Wood speak at the Celebration III and he had a lot to say about how he was chosen for the part.
Basically they sent out these recording kits to a ton of actors that were up for the role. They all recorded the same lines and then Lucasfilm ran the same "Grievous" filter on all the voices. Once they were all processed Lucas got to listen to them. The kicker is that no names were associated with the voice, they were all numbers. As a part joke, part seriousness Matt Wood decided to put his voice into the set as well.

He said Mcallum contaced him the next day and said Lucas wanted to meet whatever number Wood had been. Wood said he thought it was a joke and that they knew it was him, eventually he came clean about it and everyone was cool.

Someone asked him about Oldman, but according to him Oldman was like a first idea that some thought might be good because of his previous work with Dracula...but it never went much past that stage. I think he said Oldman was out at the "ranch" visiting and they mentioned it to him in passing, but that he wasn't real interested in doing it. John-Rhys Davis was also a what if thing, but they never even approached him.

The Greivous that you have heard in the Clone Wars cartoon is not Matt Wood either...that is someone else.

I actually have a small video snippet of Matt Wood doing the Greivous voice from the Celebration III if anyone wants to see it. There is a funny joke at the end too. I don'
t have any way to host it though. The file is like 7 megs. I can send it to some one that can host it.

I would have liked a cartoone actor like Frank Welker. Giving Grievous a Megatron voice would have been nice!

Disney being even worse? Dreamworks is the studio that builds their animated fare around what stars they can get.

That's who I thought of immediately when reading the thread title. The guy does great voicework.

No love for Vin Diesel? I guess it would be too close to the voice of Iron Giant?

Or how about Kevin Conroy? Or is that too much Batman there?

the worst part of the films that use famous actors, is that the previews actually advertise the voice-actors, such as Shark Tale - "Starring Will Smith, Jack Black, etc."

That's another great thing about Pixar. Even though the names are famous, they don't advertise them. They let the movie stand alone. I know that's the case for Incredibles and Finding Nemo, but I don't remember the previews for Toy Story. Admittedly, The first two don't have as big of names as Toy Story...
