Fantasia - The original 124-minute version of Fantasia has never had a wide theatrical release. The only times the original "Fantasound" version of the film played were in roadshow engagments from November 1940 until December 1941. Walt Disney himself had to personally supervise this release, which only played in 12 venues (only 16 "Fantasound" equipped prints were ever made). The original roadshow version, apart from its fifteen-minute intermission, runs 124 minutes (just over two hours). Compared to the more familiar versions of Fantasia, it featured:
- much lengthier (and always on-camera) interstitials from Deems Taylor, especially for the then-revolutionary "Rite of Spring" sequence.
- A round of applause from the orchestra for Mickey - Mouse following the "Sorcerer's Aprrentice" sequence, after Mickey and Stokowski shake hands and Mickey runs off-screen. This is immediately followed by a sight gag involving a chimes player having an accident with his instrument.
- footage of the musicians exiting and re-entering the bandstands immediately before and after the intermission. The sequence after the intermission features an impromptu jam session by the on-screen musicians.
- No on-screen credits, save one title card which displayed the film's name, the copyright notice, "Color by Technicolor," the MPPDA approval certificate, and the RCA Sound System logo. The production credits were featured in a specially prepared collectible program booklet availiable for purchase by roadshow performance attendees. Since the first editing of the film after its initial roadshow release, none of this extra material (except part of the intermission used for the 50th Anniversary's end credits sequence) has been seen publicly until the 60th Anniversary release.

- The 60th Anniversary Edition DVD restores all of the interstitial footage (including the Intermission), but the soundtrack of the extended Deems Taylor dialogue could not be located, so a new recording of voice-over actor Corey Butron reciting all of the Deems Taylor dialogue had to be made in order for the narration to sound more uniform throughout. In addition, "The Pastoral Symphony" is more complete, but hard zooming had to be done on some scenes to avoid showing the controversial "picaninny centaurette."

- One shot in the Pastoral sequence was digitally altered for the 60th anniversary DVD to remove a black centaurette. In the original version, the centaurette rolls out the red carpet for Bacchus as he approaches his throne. The alteration makes it look like the carpet is rolling by itself. [Prior laserdisc version had a tad more visual information of the black centaurette, the revised DVD edition completely erases all shots of this character. Calling this dvd edition a 'restored' version is a complete and erroneous misnomer]

- The 1990 50th Anniversary theatrical re-release features an element all other versions before or since don't have...an end title sequence crediting all the people involved in the film's production. This is seen over the departing musicians' footage taken from the long-deleted intermission to the "roadshow" version. The end credit sequence is only available on the 50th Anniversary videocassette and LaserDisc editions.

wasn't Swamp Thing actually the international cut?

I think it was, but I'll try to verify it with a websearch/review.

I take it we are talking about only films which are available with more than one cut, or only available in a cut different than the theatrical version, right? You mentioned "double dipped" but that would make the list too long if you include movies that were just released again with the same cut.

Star Wars (all but Episode II IIRC)
Apollo 13: IMAX version included with Anniversary Edition
Disney's Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King can be watched with or without an extra song, but even without it it's not quite the same as the theatrical version (unless the theaters are IMAX theaters)
Aladdin could count also, at least for the changing of a line in the opening song if not for slight animation changes.
Josie and the Pussycats had a PG version released.

How nitpicky can we be? Does the bush blurring in Mulholland Dr. count?

A lot of Oliver Stone's DVDs are director's cuts. JFK, Nixon, Any Given Sunday, and Natural Born Killers are ones with a Director's Cut for sure.

Giles

didn't Lions Gate Home Video along with the unrated release of "Monster's Ball" also release an extended cut of "Eve's Bayou"?

Should X-Men and Ray even count? The deleted scenes are available using a "branching" feature, but it isn't seamless. Same thing with Young Adam, the more "offensive" footage is contained as a special feature, not as an alternate version of the film.

And White Chicks is available in PG-13 and Unrated versions. ;)

FWIW, there is no DVD of the US theatrical cut of Brazil. Although the old barebones Universal disc lists the shorter runtime, it actually contains the same director's cut as the Criterion disc. The European theatrical cut is available in some places outside R1, but in R1, only the director's cut and TV edit have been released.

'Streetcar Named Desire' is only available in the "director's cut" version ... does that count?

'The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly' has two cuts
'Nixon' had two releases, I believe the first was the theatrical, but there's definitely a director's cut
'Manhunter' has had four different cuts released, though none was the widescreen version of the true theatrical cut.
I believe 'Thief' was modified as well
'Mallrats' has a different cut coming soon ... also, I believe 'Clerks' was an "original cut", not a "director's cut" [unlike 'Mallrats', which will be a director's cut]
Several Chaplin movies are available in different cuts, both done by Chaplin ... 'Modern Times', 'A King In New York', 'A Lady In Paris', and 'The Kid' ... maybe more, depending how technical you want to be about 'The Circus'
'Halloween'
'New York, New York' is only a director's cut
'Amadeus'
'The Outsiders' has a new cut coming soon
'Apocalypse Now'
'1941' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' have both been modified from their original cuts
'The Wild Bunch' is only the "director's cut", and a new extended "director's cut" is being done ... on that subject, there's an extended 'Major Dundee' coming soon, and I believe 'Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid' is being changed (again) as well ... but, on the other hand, those were all recut by the studio anyway ... I don't know what this list is intended to cover
Wasn't there an extended cut of the new 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'?
'Blood Simple' is only the director's (or s') re-cut
'Blade Runner' is only available in a director's cut, and there's a new cut on the way if they ever clear the legal hurdles

I think so. Superman was on the original list, so I assume he's counting movies only available in a version different from the theatrical cut.

"Pretty Woman"...only the unrated director's cut is on DVD and the upcoming "15th Ann. Ed." is, again, to be the longer, unrated, director's cut of the film. I don't believe the theatrical cut of the film has ever been available on DVD in region 1. Not sure if this is the case in other regions or with earlier formats.

GuamGuy, or anyone else, do you know if the Region 2 (UK) disc of Thief is this "special director's editon"? I don't think it is, as nothing like it is listed under special features. I would like to know if it is the original theatrical cut. The US version, which also was on VHS, has some added footage at the end, and it looks bad; I've heard reports of bad audio/video synch in this new footage.

UPDATE: in response to my own question, one of the big Czech music/video retailers is ordering for me the UK version of THIEF, nowhere on which is written "director's cut" or "scenes not in the theatre" like the U.S. disc. It will take about a month. So, if anyone else is interested (there have been discussions on this forum about Mann's "directorial revisionism"), I'll post my findings.

(By the way, I now have the Japanese MGM disc of Manhunter, the UK Last of the Mohicans--the TRUE theatrical cuts of these movies that don't exist in R1. I really hope I can add Thief to this list.)

It's slim because it's a work in progress reference list - every contribution is greatly appreciated. I thought it would be a great idea to have a list that would refect what studios are releasing as extended cuts, edited versions that differed from the original theatrical version (i.e, Disney's Aladdin), NC-17 rated versions disguised as "unrated", etc.

what's the story with My Own Private Idaho - is there actually previousily deleted footage reinstated back into the film?

This list is confusing me slightly, because sometimes (like "Apocalypse Now") a distinction is made when the movie was or is available in its original theatrical cut, and sometimes ("Ali", "Bad Santa"...) it doesn't mention it.

'Manhunter' - there have been other cuts, a mis-labelled "theatrical" cut and an interim director's cut
'Thief' was modified slightly

Chaplin- Image released the original theatrical cuts of these, but the recent Warner re-releases were Chaplin's later-in-life re-cuts:
'Modern Times'
'A King In New York'
'A Lady In Paris'
'The Kid'
'The Circus' has different music or something, I don't know if you'd count that.

'1941' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' have both been modified from their original cuts
'The Wild Bunch' is only the "director's cut" (prepared after Peckinpah died)
Wasn't there an extended cut of the new 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'?
'Blade Runner' is only available in a director's cut, and there's a new cut on the way if they ever clear the legal hurdles

and that's kind of the point to this list, is that alot of the studios don't really promote when a newer version of a film gets released.

FWIW, C.H.U.D.'s original theatrical release was rated R. The version used on the Anchor Bay disc added back in footage excised for length (it was previously used for network television broadcast, but first appeared in the original pre-release cut of the film) and put things in their correct order. Anchor Bay should not actually even have an R rating on the back of their package, as the film has never been submitted for a new rating since the original theatrical edit that New World got an R for.

No, it's definitely a great addition to the list. But since you referred to it as being R, I wanted to make sure people realized that the original theatrical cut was R, as well. I didn't want there to be the implication that the theatrical cut was PG-13, for example.

oh, that's not good - the MPAA frowns down on this type of restoring of footage and applying a past rating for a new cut - regardless if the new footage has no new scenes of violence.

BUMP: OK, I can now answer this, if any other Mann fans are interested. The UK disc of Thief is the theatrical cut. The end scene doesn't look strangely out of sych like I remember the director's cut looking (on VHS). The image is overall very dark, grainy, with edge halos, sometimes cloudy, dull, faded colors. Poor; obviously taken from an old master, probably 20 years old. Occasionally detailed image, and the night scenes tend to look good. Sound is stereo, sounds like 1981. I don't mind the grungy image, as to me it works (to some extent) with the film's atmosphere. So, if you are a Mann purist like I am, this is worth it, as we may never see a Region 1 release of the theatrical cut. There are no extras other than the cinema trailer.

Since you're criticizing Warners and then naming Eurotrip in particular, it looks like you might be implying that that title is a Warners release (as opposed to just picking an absurd title to criticize the phenomenon). Just for the record, Dreamworks distributes Eurotrip on DVD.

Nope, just criticizing the phenomenon. Good clarification though. Warners has stated it does not release "adult" movies in the U.S. (which, I guess to them, means nc-17 or unrated).

How did they get around their own policy for releasing the unrated version of True Romance?

True Romance is a Morgan Creek production. Warners just distributes the disc. New Line gets unrated titles distributed by Warners, as well.

The only unrated (that would presumably receive an NC-17 if rated) release that Warners distributes that was actually produced by Warner Brothers proper, rather than a business partner or subsidiary, is Taking Lives.

Well, the theatrical cut of Dukes was PG-13. The unrated cut sounds like it would be rated R at worst, so it's really nothing special for Warners to do. Taking Lives was R in theatres, and so the additional footage presumably puts up to NC-17 level.

The Brood - I could be wrong on this one, but I think the DVD is uncut and not the theatrical version.

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 - same as above.

A Nightmare on Elm Street -- Isn't the current DVD missing some footage from the theatrical cut? Also Dreamscape.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes -- Extended cut in the most recent box set.

Would Close Encounters make this list?

Coming Soon: Saw 2, King Kong, Pirates (r-rated non-hardcore), Final Destination 3, Lock, Stock etc.)

Possible additions:

Conan the Barbarian -- In the double feature disc, it's the "130-minute international cut," or so DVDaf tells me.

The Warriors - "Ultimate" Director's Cut

Kingpin - 117-minute extended r-rated version

Trainspotting - Is the Collector's Series release the same as the theatrical cut? I think they might be different.

The Brood - I could be wrong on this one, but I think the DVD is uncut and not the theatrical version.

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 - is in it's complete unrated form

A Nightmare on Elm Street -- Isn't the current DVD missing some footage from the theatrical cut? Also Dreamscape.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes -- Extended cut in the most recent box set.

Would Close Encounters make this list?

Coming Soon: Saw 2, King Kong, Pirates (r-rated non-hardcore), Final Destination 3, Lock, Stock etc.)

yes, the 'Trainspotting' SE is the unrated cut of the film, as is 'The Brood' - thanks for pointing that out.

'Hellbound: Hellraiser II' is only available on DVD in it's unrated form.

Didn't know about 'Elm Street' or 'Dreamscape' - can anyone else back this claim and include info.

I really didn't consider adding 'Close Encounters' since the SE cut of the film is the only cut available on DVD, the only alternate version/cut of the film was released on laserdisc by Criterion.

there's an unrated cut of 'Final Destination 3' coming out - I didn't know that?

Ah, I may have been mistaken on FD3. There'll be some sort of branching options and alternate endings, but not an "Unrated" version, I suppose.

I don't think the cut is any different, is it? There are deleted scenes, but they're separate from the film. There was some talk that it would contain an alternate cut, but that was scrapped from the eventual release.

WRT Ace Ventura, nothing is really missing, as it's the theatrical cut. However, some people complained that a scene added for home video is not on there.

What's different about the Director's Cut? I did a search and couldn't come up with anything.

Is this a different movie than the one with Elisha Cuthbert and Emile Hirsch? Because that one has been available on DVD in an unrated version since it came out back in 2004.....the 9/1 date is just for the upcoming Blu-ray release...

Another movie you can add to the list is the upcoming "extended/director's cut" of Friday, coming out on 9/8....
