I Love Planet Of The Apes (68) - Should I Buy The Box?

I've never seen the sequels or the TV series - what do you guys think?

Do you collect other movie franchises? Are you a completist that needs to have every sequel, even though some of them might not be so great? If you are still building your collection, have lots of shelf space and money - buy it all; you might enjoy them. I can't speak for your movie tastes. The first one is considered a classic by many. Read the user reviews for the sequels on IMDB (but don't read the spoilers) to get a feel for what the sequels and TV series are regarded as.

Unless you grew up on the sequels and TV shows or are a completist, I'd say just stick with the original, the other stuff is not that great.

Just buy the 2-disc 35th anniversary edition of the first movie and hope that the future movies get better editions down the road. All the Apes movies in the Evolution boxset are non-anamoprhic widescreen, including the original.

The only sequel I can vouch for is Beneath the Planet of the Apes, but even it is significantly inferior to the original (although they did make Nova's costume even skimpier, so that's a definite plus).

The sequels are fantastic and well worth watching. The TV series is pretty good too but i'd hold off on it until you've seen the sequels.

Some of the sequels aren't bad, but none measure up to the original. I wouldn't buy any of them or the TV show. That's what rental's for.

I have the box but not the TV series. I find all of the sequels both very re-watchable & very entertaining.

Planet of the Apes (1968) is my favorite movie of all-time.I would definately get the box if i were you.The only reason i don't have the TV series is because i can't find it anywhere (i prefer not to order from online, but may have to eventually). The more Apes, the better i say,get them all.

The box is pretty cheap these days. It got an MSRP price drop to $49.95 so it's $36.59 at DDD.com or roughly $31 from DVDSoon.com

Exactly what I was going to post... Non-anamorphic transfers... So, no.

I think the first three Apes movies are gold, and required viewing. However, if you watch them all, they really seem to have a sense of they complete each other, like the last one leads right back into the first one, and you just won't see that if you limit yourself and dismiss the others because they may not be as good as the original.

Get the TV series only if you are a completist. Even as a fan of the movies, the TV series ain't all that.

Thanks for all your help so far... am thinking and keeping an eye on the poll.

Roll on more opinions! (am swaying towards the box but not the TV series so far)

Just get the 2-disc original and wait for anamorphic transfers on the sequels.

I've always enjoyed the sequels. Just don't make the mistake of confusing them with great cinema and you should be fine. The cheap knock-offs, they're fun. That said, if you really like the first movie, I can't recommend the box set. Get the 2-disc 35th anniversary edition and hope for updates to the sequels.

I know nothing about the TV Series. Saw an episode or two as a child, but I can't really recall anything.

Get the boxset of the movies. All 5 films tell a great story. The price is cheaper than ever and those who are waiting for an anamorphic set are still waiting. Even if a new set is released next year, you will at least have the set NOW enjoying it NOW and you can always sell the set later on... or give it away as a gift.

The 5 planet of the apes movies are...interesting. The first is the monumental great one, I found 2 to be terrible, but 3-5 were interesting.

For the record, R2 has a set with anamorphic transfers of all 5 flicks.

I say get the set with the sequels. It's all one long loop, and even BATTLE still has some good moments. The TV series is formula stuff, OK for fans but not nearly as good as the movies.

BTW, ALL of the older Apes stuff (including the TV show) is far superior to the half baked remake from 2001.

I like the sequels but have yet to check them out since buying a better set to watch them on. In a perfect world I'd say but the 25th Anniversary edition AND the box set, and trade in or sell the first disc of the box. If you really like the first movie and the ape characters then the box set is worth having.

I'm a big POTA fan but am holding out for anamorphic discs of the sequels (they are of course inferior to the first film but still fun to watch for a fan). The SE of the first film is a must of course, and I got the TV series set too. I loved watching that show as a kid but I wasn't sure how it would hold up for me today. I picked up the TV set anyway and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the series after all these years. A bit cheesy, but entertaining. I hope to see a set of the Return... cartoon series too someday.

I would buy the whole set, if I were you. Before I had a DVD player, I bought the VHS boxed set. I still watch it quite often, and the sequels are enjoyable.
