Classic Movies that are unreleased or deserve a re-release on DVD

Here are a couple of films that are either not yet released on DVD or deserve to get a re-release (either because the old one's too dated or it's OOP).

Movies that Aren't Released on DVD

The African Queen (Paramount): When Will This Movie Get Released? According to www.thedigitalbits.com, Paramount is doing a restoration for a release later this year.

King Kong (WB): Is November going to be the release of the 2-Disc Version?

The Jazz Singer (WB): This film is historic. A 2007 would be perfect for a 80th Anniversary set.

The Magnificent Ambersons (WB): Orson Welles second masterpiece is still waiting to get the best elements out there.

The Big Parade (WB): A 80th Anniversary DVD this year would be nice.

Ninotchka (WB): A release later this year is already confirmed along with other Garbo movies to commemorate her 100th birthday.

Top Hat, Swing Time and other Rogers/Astaire (WB): 2 Seperate releases; later this year and next year.

Greed (WB): Next DVD Desicion winner?

Movies that Deserve a newer release

The Maltese Falcon SE (WB): It's going through a major restoration and a 2006 release is planned, according to the WHV chat at www.thedigitalbits.com.

Double Indemnity SE (Universal): Unversal pushed this one back. Is there news of a new release date?

A Streetcar Named Desire SE (WB): 2006 SE planned.

Stagecoach SE (WB): Nothing yet planned.

Network SE (WB): According to the WHV chat at www.thedigitalbits.com, this one will arrive in the next 12 months in a new 2-disc special edition.

An American in Paris SE (WB): 2006 release. Undergoing Ultra-Resolution treatment.

Wuthering Heights (MGM): This one cries out for a re-release. The HBO version is now OOP and very hard to find.

The Wild Bunch SE (WB): Is it to come with the Sam Peckinpah Boxset coming later this year???

The Searchers SE (WB): Hopefully, it will come out next year as a 50th Anniversary SE.

Bonnie and Clyde SE (WB): This one deserves a newer version. I have the old 1997 DVD and it's ok but a new 2 disc version would be better.

Fox is still holding a number of classic films hostage. Where are Lifeboat, Hush...Hush...Sweet Charlotte, the Charlie Chan films, the Mr. Moto films?

I have a lot.

-Phantom Lady
-The Woman in the Window (Lang)
-Where the Sidewalk Ends (Preminger)
-Ace in the Hole
-Wings
-Gentleman Jim
-The Divebomber
-Dawn Patrol
-Charge of the Light Brigade
-Passage to Marseilles
-Marie-Antoinette ('38)
-Tale of Two Cities ('35)

There are many more that I can't think of right now. And I would really like to see a better DVD of Welles' The Stranger + Lang's Scarlet Street.

Stagecoach REALLY needs a re-release, while the present version of The Searchers is perfectly adequate.

Stagecoach is being worked on with several other John Wayne films for a re release. No dates had been set up. Check out post 55 in this thread...

Warners catalog titles 2004-2006

I'm especially excited about the Lubitsch, noir, Lewton and silent titles! Not to mention a long-overdue revisit of Stagecoach.

Sure would like to see the Val Lewton RKO Classics "Bedlam", "Isle Of The Dead", and "The Bodysnatcher", all starring Boris Karloff. You'd think Warners would release these as a boxed set like they did with the "Film Noir Classics" last summer, since they own the entire RKO catalogue, wouldn't you?

Pretty sure Warlock has been announced, and I don't think Kiss of Death has been officially announced, but there is cover art: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/releasedat...h=06&year=2005 (scroll down to the 7th and look at the image)

Bizarre, I know.

With Criterion set to release two of my biggies this summer (Heaven Can Wait and Unfaithfully Yours) and WB publicly stating that Astaire/Rogers and Garbo sets are coming by the end of the year, I’ve happily needed to adjust the makeup of this list of late, but here are my top 10 classics that are currently MIA in R1:

Bedazzled (Donen, 1967) Fox
Hail the Conquering Hero (Sturges, 1944) Universal
Hobson's Choice (Lean, 1954) Criterion?
I Married a Witch (Clair, 1942) ???
Knock on Wood (Panana/Frank, 1954) Paramount
The Major and the Minor (Wilder, 1942) Universal
The Man Who Came to Dinner (Keighley, 1941) Warner Bros.
A Matter of Life and Death, a.k.a. Stairway to Heaven (Powell/Pressburger, 1946) Sony
The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (Sturges, 1944) Paramount
Two for the Road (Donen, 1967) Fox

The Man Who Came to Dinner (Keighley, 1941) Warner Bros.
RevKarl, is this the one featuring Monty Woolley? I just saw it a few months ago on TCM and it was a riot! Bette Davis was actually funny, something I hadn't ever imagined possible...I hope this one gets released in
Region 1 soon, too!

Yes, it is.... and I would have preordered WB's upcoming Bette Davis box set in a second if it had been included, rather than The Letter (which was released separately only a few months ago.)

While not in the same league as The Man Who Came to Dinner, you might want to catch The Bride Came C.O.D. the next time it airs on TCM; it's a It Happened One Night-ish screwball comedy starring Davis and James Cagney. (Though I've never seen it, I understand she is also quite funny in 1937's It's Love I'm After.)

Becket

For God's sakes, someone put out a decent version of this. According to the late NY Times critic Pauline Kael, Peter O'Toole's performance is the best she had ever seen by any actor in any film. *Ever*. The only existing DVD version is from MPI home video and it's supposedly heavy into suck territory.

The Sting...why we can't get a nice special edition of this great film in it's original aspect ratio (and anamorphically enhanced) is beyond me.

Papillon (the one in the upcoming Steve McQueen set is just a repackaging of the first release, I think) should get a 2-disc release as well Dog Day Afternoon.

Yes, it is. But it is in an amaray case, which is a plus.
Also, I'd like to add G-Men and City for Conquest, both with Cagney. There are enough great Cagney films not available to warrant a signature collection from warner.
