The Pink Panther is - paws down - the world's grooviest cartoon star. In 1964, this pink-inked feline slinked onto the opening credits of Blake Edwards' caper film by the same name and threatened to steal the entire show. Sleek, sophisticated and witty, the animation, produced by Friz Freleng and David H. DePatie, was a stylish departure from its contemporaries…and an instant hit. A subsequent short film, The Pink Phink, would go on to win* an Oscar® and spawn a celebrated series of six-minute cartoons featuring the sly cat. Now, for the first time, 124 cartoons produced by Freleng and DePatie between 1964 and 1980 are collected here in a swingin' 5-disc set. With over 14 hours of "pink comedy," you can't help but lick your whiskers!

This announcement is very confusing. Are the shorts included in "volume 2" and "volume 3" also part of the unnumbered "classic collection," or are they in addition to it?

There will be a 5-disc collection of all the cartoons. Those that don't want 124 shorts over 5 discs, can pick and choose from three separate volumes released at the same time. What's so confusing?

they are also part of it...just less cartoons and features for a lower price point....think of how they have done the looney tune sets, or the disney treasures vs classic cartoon favorites series.
also not that the first volume is just a rehash of
I would love to see a comparison to the r2 set

Hmmm.. I would like to see this too. If the toons are in the OAR as well as having decent extras, I will upgrade my R2 release of this set.

What about the Inspector Clouseau cartoons or the Ant and the Aardvark ones? Weren't they part of the Pink Panther series? I'd love to have those, too.

They were only part of "The Pink Panther Show" or "New Pink Panther Show" series in the 60's and 70's, with 2 PP shorts and an Inspector/Aardvark short in the middle.
Were they ever released theatrically?
The R2 set is fine (I have it) except MGM made a mistake (I hope they realise it anyway) on the aspect ratio so all the cartoons are presented not as they were originally made, but in 1.78/1 (!) They have been cleaned up though so look nice otherwise.

MGM will have a Pink Panther promotion on July 26th. It will include the release of The Pink Panther, A Shot in the Dark, Revenge of the Pink Panther, Trail of the Pink Panther, Curse of the Pink Panther, Son of the Pink Panther, and The Pink Panther Strikes Again. This comes barely over a year after MGM's Pink Panther box set so new transfers of the films included in that seem unlikely. Also being released is the five-disc The Pink Panther: Classic Cartoon Collection (the first three discs of which will also be available separately). The Collection will contain some 124 cartoons produced by Friz Freleng and David H. DePatie between 1964 and 1980, plus the Behind the Feline: The Cartoon Phenomenon documentary, the Pink Patter with Art Leonardi: The Story Behind the Animation, Remembering Friz: A Tribute to Friz Freleng, Think Pink: How to Draw the Pink Panther and Page to Screen: The Making of Two Cartoons featurettes, plus the animated main title sequences from five of the feature films.

bad news from the bits
LATE UPDATE - 6/6/05 - 7 PM PDT)
Just a quick update before we sign off for the day. We've just been informed by studio representatives that The Pink Panther: Classic Cartoon Collection 5-disc box set, previously announced for 7/26 from MGM, has been delayed until further notice. We have no information as to what the specific reason for the delay might be, but it's likely a decision that's been made by Sony (which now owns and distributes MGM titles). We'll let you know when we hear anything further on this.

Sony will re-announce all of this Pink Panther stuff at a later date. The plug has been pulled on August 5th release date for the Steve Martin version of The Pink Panther. For now, the film has been re-scheduled for February 10, 2006.
Not a good omen I would say...

"With the recent acquisition of MGM, we wanted to give our marketing department the time and opportunity to launch this very important franchise," Sony Pictures Releasing president Rory Bruer said.

It's amazing how the rare times they put out something GOOD it all falls back. Movie studios don't deserve my money cause they never have the consumer's interest in mind, which is why I try to give it to them as little of my money as possible.

I love the marketing double-talk.
Yanking a high-profile comedy from the popular summer months and dumping it in February is never a good thing. But, if the film does suck, this gives them more time to make tweaks... and it will also have a lot fewer films to compete with in early '06. Probably a good decision all around.

I haven't seen any official announcement of this, but it looks like the movies are following suit with the cartoon release. I noticed my pre-orders for Curse of the Pink Panther (MGM) and Return of the Pink Panther (Universal) were deleted from DDD. And DVDEmpire has changed their release dates to "To Be Announced".
Thanks crappy Steve Martin remake I could have told you was a bad idea without reading word one.
