The race in the AL West is already getting nasty! :eek:The AL West is always a dogfight since pretty much every year 3 of the 4 teams are good, but you rarely get a great team that can run away with it. You'd think it'd be the easiest division to win, but that never seems to be the case.

Cause there was obviously an excuse for somebody to take a swipe at a player? That was a little more than brushing.
Yeah it was classlass act by the fans. Did I specify Boston fans? No. It was meant in general, so take a Midol.
Fans are getting too grabby and touchy for their own good. And it won't be to far off before we see a baseball, basketball player, etc pull one of these dopes out of their seat and really put a few a shots on them. Even worse than the Detroit/Indiana incident.

No, it wasnt anything more than brushing. If he really wanted to nail Sheffield, he certainly could have. You cant see much from the camera angles, but if the guy did touch Sheffield, it didnt seem intentional. Security was over there quick enough. He didnt need to shove the guy. He should be suspended.

When a player comes that close to the stands you don't put your hands over and you especially don't touch them. On the replay the guy's hand wasn't even close to the ground, so going for the ball just sounds like a BS excuse. I'm not even a Yankee fan and I don't feel Sheffield should be suspended. That shove was a "brushing."

Man, they seem to be blowing this way out of proportion again. Besides the fact the fan made contact with a ballplayer in the field of play, Sheffield just seem to try to push him away. Seems more like reflex action after getting touched. Because it didn't go further, I see no reason to make a big deal out of it. Fans shouldn't touch players while fielding, fans shouldn't go after fair balls, and players shouldn't hit fans. But in the heat of the moment, this was pretty much nothing.

Watching the replay, it didn't look like the guy was going for the ball to me considering how his arm didn't even reach down to come near the ball at all. Whether it was an intentional swipe at Sheffield or not, i put more blame on the fan for reaching out and making contact with a player. I don't mind Sheffield's reaction for shoving the person back.
briank
04-14-05, 11:23 PM
I think the reports are making it more than it is/was.
Just because its the Yankees - Boston, it's getting more coverage.
I don't think the fan was thinking much. Initially while the ball was coming (well before it got near him, and other fans to his far left down the line were reaching over) he was getting ready to reach over as well.
Then Sheffield comes towards the wall, and at the same time the ball isn't "bouncing" anymore and clearly would have been out of his reach.
So the guy pulls back a little but still makes a "reaching" motion that was far from a reach for the ball, and even FURTHER from a "swipe"/punch at Sheffield.
The fan shouldn't have even had his arm over the fence, simply said, but not the greatest sin in the world either. I can't imagine he was taking a swipe at Gary.
Then comes Sheffields reaction, which I also don't think was so far out there. He gets "bumped"/"brushed" by a fan and has a quick knee-jerk reaction and turns and shoves him back.
Again just like the fan not being appropriate, neither was Sheffield's reaction, but again not "that big of deal" in my mind.
Think the reports are just taking it to a silly level.

And if a member of the Red Sox took a shot at a Yankee fan for no reason? Yeah, I would call him on it.

Sheffield is a dickhead for defending himself. Spoken like a true red sox fan. Listen, the red sox fan did that to obscure his play and not for nothing he ended taking a swipe on him. If i was him, i would have beat the shit out of him. But of course i should just let security take care of it. Yeah why not. They would have done nothing if Sheff didnt react. You are kidding me.

So you mean to tell me that the guy had to literally go all Ron Artest on him for him to actually justify defending himself.
You should have not put your hands there or hit the players face. Tell me if the fans have every right doing that.

No, he doesnt have the right to interfere. He should have been ejected. (and he was) But that does not give Sheffield the right to attack him.

Excuse me but be serious, the guy would have not been eject because all the other fans did the same thing and i didnt see one boston security guard do something. This one being the moron did it and thought he would get away with it until a player gets hit.

Security was there in 2 seconds! They arent going to eject people for trying and failing to interfere. That sort of thing happens all the time.

When I used to teach elementary school I always asked the kids "What do you do if someone puts their hands on you?" And they'd say "Tell a teacher, don't hit them back" - because theyd now be in trouble as well.
I see that as a good analogy here - both wrong - both idiots.

Yeah, that was an inadvertent swipe..
Just like the tossed beer was inadvertent too
No beer was tossed. When Sheffield took a swing at the fan, he (fortunately) missed and clocked that woman's beer.
The fan should've been ejected for interference (as he was), and perhaps Varitek should have been made to go back to second base (I mean, touching a player counts as interference, no?). The league should look the other way regarding Sheffield's reaction as fortunately no one was hurt, and his reflex was understandable. Maybe he should've been made to buy that woman a new beer, as she was merely a bystander.

Of course, being on the street and being in a ballpark are two totally different things. Players and fans are expected to leave each other alone, but when one doesn't, the other isn't granted a a beatdown license, nor a shoving license in this case.
I appreciate the fact that this was some sort of natural reaction from Sheffield. I don't particularly agree, as he is not the first player to be screwed with while fielding a ball up against a wall, and I don't recall a multitude of fan shovings taking place. But fine. Let him be. But to view that tape and claim that the fan was intentionally taking a malicious shot at Sheffield is somewhat humorous. He got his arm out there, made contact, got a shove, got ejected, situation over.

I didn't see anything done forcefully last night. I don't think any contact was even made. Perhaps if someone on the street came up to me and forcefully swiped me in the face, I'd defend myself accordingly. But if someone waves his arm in front of me while looking in the opposite direction, I don't think I would punch him.

He hasn't made a clutch play since games 2 and 4 of the ALDS against the Twins last year. He was probably their best player in that series but since then he's made some clutch errors for the Red Sox but that's it.

yeah, I just read this as well. For all you A-Rod haters this proves that A-Rod is a human being. Although Red Sox fans will probably say something like the kid should've gotten hit cuz he's an A-Rod fan.
BOSTON -- Alex Rodriguez saved an 8-year-old boy from serious injury when he prevented the youngster from getting hit by a truck.
The New York Yankees star said Thursday he was standing in a crosswalk on Newbury Street near downtown Boston at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when he saw the boy starting to run across the street into the path of an onrushing truck.
Rodriguez reached out and grabbed the boy, pulling him back and preventing a serious accident.
"The kid was going to get run over. I just kind of put my arm out and stopped him," he said.
It turns out the boy, named Patrick McCarthy, was already a fan of A-Rod.
"This guy just put his hand in front of me and stopped me. ... He said 'Whoa, watch out, buddy,' " McCarthy said in a television interview Thursday. "I was like, 'Wow! Like I was shocked, because he's my favorite player on the Yankees."
Rodriguez said he also had to hurry to avoid being hit by the truck -- "I almost got it, too," he said -- which he estimated was traveling 40-50 mph when he saw the boy starting to run from the sidewalk.
He said McCarthy's mother saw what happened, but he didn't see the boy's father nearby.
"I did it and I just kept walking," Rodriguez said. "I don't even know if she knew who I was."
Tuesday was a day off in the middle of New York's three-game series against the Red Sox that ended Thursday night with Boston's 8-5 win.
Rodriguez said the boy would have been seriously injured or killed had he gotten past him.
"That was a train wreck waiting to happen," he said.
Rodriguez has often been booed at Fenway since he joined the Yankees last season. Teammate Derek Jeter didn't think Rodriguez's heroic act would make Red Sox fans like him any more.
"They didn't sound any different today," Jeter said.

The guy in the GAP shirt? Perhaps it was his beer that got spilled rather than the woman's, but look at every single photo and it's obvious that no one threw the beer...

It's a shame this had to happen, but let's not pretend it was any worse than it was. It's just fortunate that Sheffield's swing, his entirely understandable reaction, didn't land on either the fan who interfered or the woman who got in the way, as that would have made an unfortunate occurence into something as terrible as the recent NBA fracas.
Specious claims like yours are only meant to inflame, to escalate the hostilitites, to make things even worse between two fanbases that should really be concentrating on keeping the few yahoos from fucking it up for the rest of us.

I watched the footage, over and over, on a Hi-Def feed on a 54" screen. Besides, the pictures I linked to clearly show that YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT.
In that other thread, you actually said that Sheffield didn't take a swing at the fan. (I'm not shitting, check it out: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5980794&postcount=50 )
Are you blind, or just blinded by hatred? I really hope you (and the idiot who interfered last night) stay out of the ballparks. This is becoming a serious problem, and those of us who love the game are getting sick of you yahoos constantly trying to inflame the hostilities between two fanbases that really should have a good deal more respect for one another.

too funny.
I guess my definition of "swing" is different than yours. He "pushed" the fan back [similar to what 'tek did to A-Rod last year], fielded the ball and then went back with clenched fists but didn't do anything...
Let's not try to rewrite the event....or recap the 2.5 seconds we saw on Sportscenter, mmmkay.

I'm not trying to rewrite the event, and you'll notice that I haven't faulted Sheffield for anything, having expressed over and over that his reaction was entirely reasonable and that the league should look the other way. Punch, shove? Doesn't really matter, as the blow didn't land and Gary got himself together quick, security removed the interfering fan, and the Red Sox won the game.
So, it's 3-3, baby, in the only matchup that matters! See you in May. :hump:
