Francis Ford Coppola (search) is hopping mad at Paramount (search) for turning his "Godfather" (search) into a violent video game.
Coppola, appearing on AMC's "Sunday Morning ShootOut" this Sunday (11 a.m. EDT), says he never gave his permission for the video game — not that he was even asked about it.
"I knew nothing about it. They never asked me if I thought it was a good idea," he says. "I went and I took a look at what it was ... What they do is they use the characaters everyone knows and they hire those actors to be there and only to introduce very minor characters. And then for the next hour they shoot and kill each other.
"I had absolutely nothing to do with the game and I disapprove," he says. "I think it's a misuse of film."

Wow, that's odd.
The Electronic Gaming Monthly article a couple months ago had an interview with the developers in which they said they had talked to Coppola and while he wasn't directly involved he'd given them full access to his library, notes etc.

They most likely didn't explain to him what the actual game would be like.

Paramount owns the rights to The Godfather - they could make a sequel without Francis if they wanted to. That's why Lucas - for all the bashing he gets on this forum - is such a genius. He owns Star Wars...no one's going to screw around with his baby unless he approves.

It's not suprising Coppola doesn't have the rights to it, since the movie was based on a successful book and the project was already in development when Coppola was brought in to direct. Lucas was the creator, which put him in an entirely different position.

What does it matter. It's just a videogame, even if it sucks its not like it will change the movies at all. The only person I could see being pissed is the person that actually created the characters and that would be Puzo.
Actually the videogame is doing the exact same thing Coppola did, taking an already existing piece of work and translating it into a different form of media. Coppola took the book to film, and the game makers are making a videogame out of it. I dont see how he has the right to cause a fuss over it.

Who the ***** cares what Coppola thinks?
If there's anyones opinion that I actually care about it would be Mario Puzo, and he's dead so it really doesn't matter.
And no matter how much this tarnishes the Godfather movie saga it still won't even amount to 10% of how bad Godfather III effed it over.
They should make a Coppola character in the game who gets brutally shot up with 1000 bullets.

I'm actually looking more forward to this then I am the Scarface game (The whole basis of the game is the fact that he LIVES at the end!)

It just occurred to me that maybe there are film clips of Coppola's movies within the game - perhaps that's what he means my "misuse of film". I could sympathize with him a little more if this were the case.
