I read the novel Football Factory on a flight from London to Toronto. Great book. I hope the movie gets it "right", as they say.
Anything with Ricky Tomlinson - The man's the real thing.

I haven't seen any of them. Can't say I fancy 1 or 2 either.
I'll recommend:
Gangster No. 1
Very grim and sharp. Features an outstanding, psychotic performance from Paul Bettany. Also features Malcolm McDowell delivering one of the finest lines ever used before a movie's opening credits (you know what I'm talking about if you've seen it ). Quality

I saw a screening of Layer Cake back in December (with a Tamer Hassan Q&A...that man is a beast), and I'll strongly second that recommendation. Hopefully it gets a stateside release soon, I'd really like to see it again. I'm excited to see what Vaughn can do with a big project like X-3, because I was thoroughly impressed with this debut.
Other British imports worth seeing:
The overstated, but not overrated (IMO, that is) Guy Ritchie films: Snatch and Lock, Stock
Chris Nolan's debut effort, "Following"
..annnddd, the ever popular "Trainspotting"

I absolutely loved Layer Cake, the UK DVD is stacked very nicely and Ive seen the US trailer and they sell it really well, although the print ads are atrocious, Craig all blown up holding a gun like some generic straight to video movie. I also agree on Gangster No.1, very gritty indeed, see that one for a great Malcolm McDowell and say away from I'LL Sleep When Im Dead, even if it has some great performances.

Just watched Dead Man's Shoes.
Highly recommended if you can get a hold of it - nice mix of humor and revenge, with some surprisingly powerful scenes.

well, The Football Factory is a very hard book to convert to film - the book is dense with inner character monologues and alot of story - the film while no where as good as the book, on it's own is very good, not great.
Frank Harper is as always (a personal favourite of current British actors) , great.

Charley,
I've seen Hooligans. It actually won two awards at this year's SXSW Film Festival. You can read my review here if you like.
I can't speak for the "UK buzz," but I thought it was a pretty darn entertaining movie. And it seemed pretty interested in showing this culture with a decent amount of authenticity. Whether it did or not I can't say, but it worked for me.

it couldnt get a Distributor in the UK even the small ones (all FDA Members DUMPED IT ...)gave it a wide berth an said straight too DVD/Vid market
The Second lead ,Marc Warren ,Wonderful ...Actor been in loads of great plays /dramas
said after ,"Sometimes , you take a role , because it will further your career , or maybe the charactor is someone you really MUST play .........
then again you take a role for the money for your retirement , an you JUST KNOW THIS FILM WILL NEVER BE SHOWN ...,"
Unlike Jaws 4,lol
on pressed in an interview , he
warren found "The Goblin" =Elijah Wood , as a typical yank who lost his earthy actor roots for bullshit /pr /big trailer bollocks

I alos recommend Dead Man's Shoes, although I say not to be too swayed by gushing brit critics calling it the next level of slasher films. I was expecting some kind of genre film, and while i got that, I also got a great and touching story.

It’s still lacking US distribution.
Sorry to hear Marc Warren’s a bit cool on it, I loved him to bits in Oliver Twist. I’m sure he’s great in the flick anyway.
When the film was shown in Texas there were a few UK types who were able to see the film, and they seemed to like the film as much as the yanks (from the IMDB):
As an English ex-pat and a football fan, I went along to the Alamo Draft House hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I got the best. This film is simply brilliant and finally provides us with an accurate portrayal of life amongst the hooligans in a way The Football Factory or ID never did.
