I say Lu-mee-nes. My first language is Spanish though so I tend to pronounce things out

Now how the heck to do you d 4x4?! I'm up to that in pizzle mode (the ones before were kind of easy if you keep pressing pause, though ).

But how do you do a 4x4 in this game?

I found the Japanese cover for Lumines.
The katakana for the title was ルミネス "ru-mi-ne-su".

Pretty much the same pronunciation as luminesce: "Lou-Me-Ness"

FINALLY got it, jeeze. For the 4X4 it took me about 10 tries (and then I chose go back to menu, load save data, which ERASED it, grr, so I had to do it again), because I never got the two blocks I needed next to each other, always 3 blocks apart, so I had to drop, scuttle, drop, scuttle, drop, scuttle, drop, drop, all before the timeline passed by. NOT easy.

The horse gave me a bit of trouble (6-7 tries). I stopped at the arrow just because I have tons of time for this at work and I should be studying

I'm having a hell of a time with the "clear 20 blocks in one pass" puzzle. Anybody have advice on this one?

I don't know what level I'm up to, but I had just over 400,000 points.

I completed the puzzle mode, and I'm up to the guy with the spades/hearts in the CPU mode.

I have 35 skins unlocked.

Lumines owns my soul. I don't know why I bought those other games. I bought Lumines to show my mother, who happened to be in town for launch day.

I highly recommend going after the puzzle modes to build your scores. I took that advice from someone in the main PSP thread here. I have literally played only 12 games in challenge mode. My current top ten scores go from 39,000 to 405,000 or so. Doing the puzzles and CPU mode put some things in my head about the way the blocks move, and I got tons better at the challenge mode each time I played.

You can set up a huge chain reaction combo and wait for the clear thingy.

Set up something so all of one color is layered between all of the other color, but where the layers are connected at the ends. Then drop the clear thingy when it comes, get rid of all of that color, and what is left will fall onto itself and dissapear.

It is like two combs attached together- it prevents any pcs from creating squares, until you get a clear thingy, than everything goes at once.

Put all the other junk on the side, and work it separately to keep it manageable.

Good luck.

I kind of had that idea, but I just haven't been able to pull it off. I guess I just need more practice. How many levels are there in the puzzle mode anyway?

EDIT: I finally got it. For some reason, when I read 20 blocks, I thought it meant 20 2x2 blocks, not 20 individual ones. I was trying to make it too complicated. Thanks for the help.

I just spent 7 freaking hours at work playing Lumines... cracked 80,000+ points, though (and up to 14 skins).

What are you supposed to do in the clear all in the puzzle mode?

I got an EASY and FOOLPROOF way to do any of the character puzzles. I used squares and circles. First I drew squares outlining the figure. Then I filled in the empty space with circles to form a square/rectangle. Then I divided it into 4X4's, and added up at the sides to fill up 4X4's if only two of the 4's had been drawn in.

Then just follow the map. It's a snap.

Edit: Got my answer from Gamefaqs:
Spoiler:

****Puzzle #16: Clear All****
(This puzzle does not have a random block pattern)
Method:
Block 1 > Drop.
Block 2 > Rotate 3 times, move 2 squares left, drop.
Block 3 > Move 1 square right, drop.
Block 4 > Rotate 2 times, move 2 squares left, drop.
Block 5 > Drop.
Block 6 > (Wait for current blocks to clear) Move 1 square left, drop
Remeber not to drop the next block before the All Clear has happened.
//Lowest possible time: 8 seconds.\\
