Both teams I would think happy at the result, Juve with an away goal, will try and sneak a 1-0 next wed, but Liverpool got a better than expected goal haul...
And I'd be not at all surprised to see liverpool score 1 or 2 goals in Turin.

Inter need to be banned from European play next year. Hell, I'd consider banning all Italian teams from Europe for a year. The Italian FA have let the Ultra groups do whatever the hell they want for a very long time with absolutely no consequences. It's at the point where the police won't go into the areas where the Ultras sit (and where this crap starts) for fear of their own lives. And it's not just Milan where this is happening (see: The incident at AS Roma in the group stage of the CL where a ref was injured by a coin thrown from the stands, and last weekend at Lazio where large sections of the crowd (the Ultra sections) were displaying Nazi swastikas and other fascist BS (which is illegal in Italy)).

I had to really try not to bust out screaming in happiness when Liverpool-Juve went to full time.
The best thing is we get to be the ones to take Chelski, their pompous ass of a manager, their russian mob boss owner and their half-billion dollar roster out of the CL. Man, that's gonna be sweet. I hope Xabi shows that fat prick Lampard a thing or two as revenge for Lampard breaking his leg... shake the fat man out of his boots and create some goals.

Honestly I'd be very suprised to see Liverpool beat by Chelsea over 2 legs, esp with Anfield for the 2nd leg.
I really think they'll go on and win it all now, like when we won the waffa cup with Houllier.
Full of confidence I am.

I don't think I've ever wanted Liverpool to beat anyone more than I want them to beat Chelski. It's going to be a fecking blast.
My one worry, of course, is that we're going to be tired as hell which will kill our league chances. Of course, it would be beautiful if Everton finished above us... but we won the Champions League and took their CL spot. :) (and am I the only one that assumes that Everton 2005 = Ipswich 2001?)

That debacle at the Inter Milan-AC Milan game was not only front page news in Europe, but it was seriously discussed here in the USA, of all things! I hate to say this, but if UEFA wants to cut down on this type of violence they may have to institute strict security screening with metal detectors and body searches at all games to stop the type of hooliganism that in the past has led to large-scale tragedies. :(

UEFA is meeting tomorrow afternoon (or tomorrow morning on this side of the Atlantic) to decide on Inter's punishment.
Given the fact that UEFA decisions take into account the previous 5 years, and that Inter was already punished in 2001 for similar crowd trouble (were given a fine and had to play 3 games behind closed doors), I'd be floored if they didn't get a 1-year ban from playing in European competition. Of course, UEFA seem to be wildly inconsistent with their punishment scheme, so they might get off easy)

Inter Milan seek damages from fan
Friday, April 15, 2005 Posted: 1120 GMT (1920 HKT)
MILAN, Italy (Reuters) -- Inter Milan are seeking damages from a fan arrested by Italian police after the abandonment of their Champions League quarterfinal against AC Milan.
The fan, who Italian police have identified as Michele P, faces charges relating to the throwing of flares and other missiles on to the pitch during Tuesday's second leg.
Inter could be handed a heavy fine and a ban from playing home games at their San Siro stadium when UEFA's disciplinary body meet to discuss the incidents.
Public prosecutor Fabio Roia told the Italian news agency ANSA that Inter had made a formal written claim for damages.
"I consider this a very important signal. It means that the club is distancing itself from its fans," said Roia.
He said that he believed this was the first time an Italian club had positioned itself as the 'injured party' in a case involving crowd trouble.
Inter will suffer heavy financial losses if they are forced to play Champions League games behind closed doors.
ANSA also reported that Franco Caravita, who they called 'one of the leaders of the Inter home end', had been ordered to appear before the Milan public prosecutor's office as part of an investigation into Tuesday's events.
Inter, 2-0 down from the first leg, were trailing 1-0 when the second leg was abandoned after 73 minutes.
The derby was the second time this season that a Champions League game in Italy failed to finish due to crowd trouble, following similar events at AS Roma's game with Dynamo Kiev in September.
Tough crackdown
In response to calls by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi for "drastic measures", Italian soccer officials announced a tough crackdown on missile-throwing.
Exercising special powers, Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Franco Carraro said referees could suspend, or not even start, a match in which missiles were thrown, flares lit or any banners waved that could cause offense.
A game that was subsequently abandoned would be awarded as a 3-0 defeat for the team whose fans were deemed responsible for the trouble, Carraro said, invoking an existing federation rule.
But that plan was met with strong criticizm from those in the game who think it would be unworkable and could backfire, encouraging fans to interrupt matches with missile-throwing.
"It gives a free hand to the delinquents, they are the ones who should be punished not the clubs who are the victims of these actions," said Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini, who is also vice-president of the Italian football league.
"Carraro's decision was rushed and done to show that the federation is doing something."
Brescia president Gino Corioni said: "Every team has a group of crazy fans who know how to harm a club and that is actually their intention. Carraro's decision is madness."
A spokesman for Italy's police officer's trade union was also critical.
"It would increase the risk for the police. It is the clubs that should provide private security inside their stadiums during the week," he said.

How can fans bring flares into a stadium and then when something like this happens, the club reacts as if they are innocent?
No sympathy at all.

Pretty tame punishment, 4 European matches behind closed doors.
Costs them money for sure. but not a tough punishment.

That's not even a slap on the wrist. With that kind of feeble punishment, it gives more incentive to idiotic fans to do the same thing elsewhere.
I guess its 6 matches .. 2 are on probation. and on revenue of 2.5M per match, its a min of 10M loss of revenue and up to 15M. Hits the club pretty hard. But yes I agree a slap on the wrist
Stadium ban and fine for Inter
Friday, 15 April 2005
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body has ordered FC Internazionale Milano to play their next six European club competition matches behind closed doors as a result of the disturbances at the abandoned UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against AC Milan on Tuesday.
Probationary period
European football's governing body said after its disciplinary body had met in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday that of these six matches, the last two are under a probationary period of three years according to Article 15 bis of the disciplinary regulations.
'Original sanction to be executed'
"This means that if a further offence is committed during the probationary period, the disciplinary body may order the original sanction to be executed, in addition to disciplinary sanctions for the second offence," UEFA stated. In addition, Inter have been fined CHF 300,000.
Forfeit win
The quarter-final second leg has been awarded to Milan as a 3-0 forfeit and Milan therefore go through to the semi-finals on a 5-0 aggregate. An appeal against any of these decisions can be submitted within three days from the receipt of the written grounds.
'Sending out a message'
"The decision taken by the Control and Disciplinary Body sends out a message to all those in football and football fans that this kind of behaviour at European matches under UEFA jurisdiction is something that will not be tolerated," UEFA spokesman Rob Faulkner told uefa.com after the verdict had been announced.
'Not good enough'
"The scenes that we saw on Tuesday which led to the interruption of the match due to fans' misbehaviour is not the kind of thing that UEFA wants to see," he added.
Missiles thrown
Tuesday night's game at the Giuseppe Meazza was abandoned in the 75th minute after missiles were thrown on to the pitch, with one striking Milan goalkeeper Dida. Milan, who won the first leg 2-0 last week, had scored a 30th-minute goal through Andriy Shevchenko to increase their aggregate lead, but shortly after Nerazzurri midfield player Esteban Cambiasso had a goal disallowed, German referee Markus Merk decided to suspend the match and take both sets of players off the field and into the dressing rooms.
Match abandoned
An attempt to resume the game was made. But within seconds, further objects landed on the pitch and the referee immediately abandoned the match.

How many fans were killed at Heysel? That resulted in ALL English clubs banned from Europe for half a decade. Maybe if UEFA banned Italian clubs from Europe for a single season this shit would stop. I know this isn't remotely in the same league as the Heysel tragedy, but look how English football turned itself around in the 90s. Nobody thought that it could happen, and now look at the state of the English game, how rich and competitive so many of the clubs have become.
wildcatlh
04-15-05, 01:50 PM
39 people were killed at Heysel, through the fault of thugs on both sides of the ball and the stadium itself (as well as UEFA for holding the final there, since everyone was screaming at them that it wasn't safe).
Liverpool were banned from Europe for 7 years after that tragedy, and the rest of the English clubs were banned for 5 years. And you're right. UEFA apparently has decided that they're not going to do anything until someone dies. And unfortunately, it's inevitable that's going to happen at an Italian match. Over the last 20 years since Heysel, the English FA (and their government) have done as much as possible to try to rein in the hooligans so that kind of scene never happens again. The Italian FA has chosen to ignore it, and it's gotten worse and worse in Italy.
(on a not-remotely-connected to hooliganism note but still a sad one for one of the remaining clubs, today's the 16th anniversary of 96 Liverpool fans dying at Hillsborough before an FA Cup Semi-Final match against Nottingham Forest. See http://www.contrast.org/hillsborough/history/index.shtm)
