Why not. He is #1 in the world, just beat Phil head's up, and Augusta is his dream course.

Of course I would never take him at 7-2. That's ridiculous.

Golf: Masters ball is still a possibility for the future

By Peter Hutcheon
phutcheon@belfasttelegraph.co.uk
04 April 2005

Hootie Johnson has had enough.

After several years of lengthening the Augusta National Course it will stay at 7,290 yards.

But if technology continues to increase the distance players hit their drives, he will introduce a special Masters ball for the tournament in the future.

And the plan has met with the approval of Jack Nichlaus who has been a long-time campaigner for restrictions to be placed on the golf ball.

"The Augusta National is just about the only place that's powerful enough to take that position, to say, `There's the golf ball, and you play it,'" he says.

"Definitely development of the ball has had as much of an impact on the game as the development of clubs and it's an area of the game which needs looked at."

A Masters ball with identical specifications for every player has been designed and although it won't be deployed this year, the threat now exists.

Johnson says if driving distances keep increasing making the course shrink, the committee will introduce it.

"The Augusta National will do what is necessary to protect the integrity of our golf course and the heritage of our tournament," he said.

Since last year's tournament the club have not altered the course save for re-grassing on the fourth and 15 greens.

Nichlaus is set to miss this year's tournament because of a recent family bereavement.

And another former champion, Seve Ballesteros, has bowed out because of a persistent knee injury but does plan to return to competitive golf later in the season.

The Master committee expect nine former champions who have been invited to play, to turn them down - a list which includes Arnold Palmer who bade an emotional farewell to the tournament last year.

Colin Montgomerie's late invitation did not materialise, to no-one's surprise. Recent good performances did not produce the necessary tournament victory to take him back into the world's top 50.

The Spaniards have a good history at Augusta. I'm looking for the tradition to continue, from someone not named Garcia. ;)

Jimenez has been playing pretty well lately too. He's apparently getting some attention too - his odds were 100-1 yesterday.

I'm heading down to Augusta Friday morning to watch the weekend rounds with my college roommate who has patron badges. I went with another friend and saw the "Tiger Slam" in 2001. We sat about five feet behind the 12th tee box on Sunday during the final round. Augusta is about 5 times as beautiful as it looks on TV. If you get a chance, watch it on HDTV.

Funny, the European Tour hasn't had troubles with weather, particularly in Dubai, and Qatar.

I think the PGA Tour just has a really bad run of luck this year in regards to weather. Of course, it didn't help that this spring has proved to be one of the wettest on record in the US Southeast, either.

Because of the rains that will pretty much wipe out play probably today and probably much of tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised that they can't finish the Masters until Tuesday. As such, the course will play very differently than normal and that could benefit players who emphasize more on accuracy than driving distance.

By the way, I expect within the next 2-3 years that the PGA Tour and the Royal & Ancient Club at St. Andrews will agree on an international standard for a reference golf ball (probably made by Titleist) that will emphasize more accuracy than sheer driving power; this will negate the effect of the oversized drivers and high-tech irons that have made many golf courses obselete. (They're already talking about doing the same for tennis in order the negate the effect oversized rackets and the current generation of overstrong power serving players.)

I feel bad laughing about it since the guy's a legend and he's in his 70s, but shit... It's rare that I would say I could outshoot someone, but I think I could shoot in the low 100s even at Augusta, so it would be close between me and ol' Billy.

It's hard to laugh to much at him in that respect. If I shot a 106 at Augusta from the blacks i'd be dancing all the way home.

I have to say that par Tiger made (on 4?) after hitting his drive barely 100 yds into the trees was one of the most impressive "bad holes" i've ever seen. No matter what, the guy is just fun to watch.

I actually thought a long time last night over whether or not I could shoot a 106 at Augusta. Basically, that's double bogey golf. I'm about a 10 handicap, so it would be a tough call I think. I figure I could make most of the par 3s in regulation, and some of the par 5s. Those long par 4s, no way. It would all come down to how badly I'd putt, and I daresay I'd putt pretty badly on those fast Augusta greens. So I guess it's possible, but doubtful, not that I'll ever have the chance.

They've already started Round 2. I'll try to update as I have time.

Doubtful - weather looks fine from tomorrow on. They can easily squeeze in 54 holes over 2 days. They've done it before.

I saw that they were starting at 8 am. Maybe they want to give the course a chance to dry out a little with a later start time.

There is a set way to do the pairings. If 2 people finish tied after a round ends, the one who finishes that round first gets the later tee time the next round if there is an odd number of golfers ahead of them.

Here's hoping Tiger is held off over the final 27 holes... I hate listening to him being interviewed... he is an immense talent, which seems to be the one reason he is so popular, he seems to act like a baby whenever he does something wrong

Don't blame CBS. You don't believe that they would kill to show 10 hours of Masters coverage each day? Blame Augusta National - they dictate the coverage. They have for 50+ years.

Who knows. You'd have to ask an A.N. member. The Masters is a unique televised sports event. You do realize that The Masters pays CBS to broadcast the tournament and they are always 1-year deals. Usually it is the other way around (network pays sports entity for broadcast rights). Then Augusta National sells the commercial time.

Terrific final round. Tiger 2005 isn't the Tiger of old. Old Tiger would have stomped all over DiMarco on 17 and 18.

That was cool of Tiger to acknowledge his dad and dedicate it to him during the ceremony. I wonder how nervous Ryan Moore had to be, being in the same room with Tiger and Phil?

Add that chip by Tiger to the short list of clips that will be played over and over again in the years to come.

Why?

I've always said - and said again in a previous post on this very thread - that Woods is a good bet on any drive & putt course. The Augusta National is such a course.

This Masters is probably the first time in my lifetime that I didn't see a single hole played on television. I spent the weekend in Hot Springs, Arkansas, at beautiful Oaklawn Park.

Like Red Dog wagering on the Masters, I didn't have much luck with the ponies this past weekend. Nice weekend though.

Why is everybody so quick to blame Tiger's errant shots on the equipment. It was quite obvious by his swing on some of his tee-shots that he could have been playing any manufacturer's driver and it would have sailed right. He was opening up his swing waaaay too early.

What he needs to do is forget trying to hit it 350 yards and instead dial it back a bit, "settle" for hitting it 300-310 down the middle. If he even hits a few more fairways yesterday, DiMarco wouldn't have been close to a playoff.

I just don't see him as a 45" graphite shaft kinda guy. That same style of driver got Phil in lots of trouble also when he was going huge but foul balled it a lot.

Me neither. I don't think he needs the extra distance myself. But the point still stands. He could be using a driver from the '60s and still put those balls off to the right with the way he was opening up his swing way too early on some of those balls he sailed to the right. Especially his tee shot on 17.

Everybody is praising him for his shot on 16 (which they should), but his tee shot on 17 was one of the WORST drives I've ever seen under pressure from someone who's supposed to be so clutch. His tee shot on #18 wasn't so peachy either.

Hypothetically, I think if DiMarco gets an 18-hole playoff against Woods instead of a sudden death playoff, DiMarco wins by 2-3 strokes.

But I haven't read anyone giving DiMarco shit for his approach to the 18th green in the playoff. He has basically the same approach he left short on the 18th ten minutes before (I think the ball was maybe 10 yards closer to the green, if that), and what does he do? Takes one club less and leaves that one short, too. I'm really confused at what he was trying to do with the 7 iron in his hands.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) The final round of the 2004 Masters saw Phil Mickelson finally get his first win at a major, but thanks to the absence of a certain Mr. Tiger Woods, it failed to attract big ratings. Woods won his fourth Masters green jacket on Sunday (April 10) and helped boost CBS' overnight 2005 Masters ratings by a whopping 41 percent.
Sunday's final round, which saw Woods and Chris DiMarco go head-to-head for 18 holes and then into a sudden death playoff, did a 10.3 rating/21 share for CBS in metered market overnights. Those numbers were up significantly from 2004, when the final round did a 7.3/18.

The early figures were the best since CBS went to 18-hole coverage in 2002 and it was the tournament's highest rated final round since 2001. That year, which saw Woods beat David Duval by two strokes, had a 12.9/27 for its last round.

Because the golf action ran extra long, CBS' fast national primetime ratings also got a bump, with "60 Minutes" doing a 12.7/23, though those number will likely change when final figures become available.

wendersfan

I doubt the ratings would have been so high if DiMarco had folded on the back nine.

Tiger uses Nike irons that were very similar to his Titleists, they were designed by Phil Sykes. What's different is the Nike swoosh and a more square clubhead? He signed with Titleist while playing MP-14s. Mizuno irons use to be forged by Miura. Miura use to also make TM and Nike forged clubs but stopped, and the MP-33s are copies of the old John Letters blades from the 50's which Mizuno now own rights to. etc. etc. So in the end, you realize its just a hunk of metal melted down and rebadged over the years.

I don't play Nike! ;)

Woods is using a Diamana 83X matte blue shaft in his driver. Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana 103X shaft in his 3 wood. Mitsubishi?

I just got back home after seeing the 3rd and 4th rounds. I'm tired and a bit sunburned but it was awesome. We sat just behind the rope on the 12th tee box on Saturday and on Sunday, we sat just behind the rope on the 9th green, then on the rope behind the fairway just in front of 18 for the finish. My wife saw us on when they panned the crowds along the fairways during the playoff. A few random impressions after four days, 1100 miles on my Civic, and four cigars:

1.) Tiger Woods is a stone cold, ice veined killer on the course.

2.) After two days of rain, the spectator pathways around the course were like the streets of Deadwood. It takes a lot of horseshit to make that course so green and when it rains, it comes back up.

3.) Augusta Nation is VERY hilly.

4.) You could deal a game of Texas Hold-Em on those greens.

5.) Dick Enberg is not so genial when you block his golf cart path.

6.) Tiger Woods drives himself around during the tournement. I know because he almost ran over my toes on Washington Avenue in his pimped out Buick courtesy car.
