Cubs sign Ramirez to $44 million deal
Third baseman gets four-year contract extension
SportsTicker
Updated: 2:55 p.m. ET April 4, 2005
PHOENIX - Aramis Ramirez, one of the keys to Chicago Cubs’ chances in 2005, Monday agreed to terms on a four-year, $44 million contract extension.
Ramirez, who was 10th in the National League Most Valuable Player voting last season, was slated to make $6 million this season and would have been eligible for free agency in November. His new deal also includes a vesting option for 2010.
The 26-year-old Ramirez hit .318 with 36 homers and 103 RBI in 547 at-bats last season. He is a career .273 hitter with 127 homers and 458 RBI in parts of seven seasons.

I think everybody expects Pedro to pitch great this year with the chip on his shoulder... and in the pitcher friendly National League. However, no way he plays that great for the life of the very expensive contract.. That's how I see it, it's more a 2-3 year down the road problem, not this year.

I haven't seen anything about DirecTV (I signed up for it though). I saw this link on another board. Free on cable 4/4-4/10

Someone needs to mention that to Time Warner in Houston. I was looking forward to seeing the Twins/Mariners opener.
Christ, Vazquez sucks. Deftones is probably not enjoying himself at the park today.

I guess you'll have to wait at least one more game for that.
I give credit to whomever is running this MASN entity for hiring Mel Proctor to do Nats' games. One of the best in the biz. However, they are still avoiding references to 'Baltimore' for the O's games - using 'O's' instead of 'Bal.' I guess we won't be seeing 'Baltimore' on the Orioles' road unis anytime soon.

If it weren't for their fragile 1-2 starters, the Cubs would look incredible.

I thought he had worked on his "headcase-itis" over the offseason.
I guess not

It wouldn't have been so bad had he:
a) not whistled to get the ump's attention
and b) not been completely wrong. Don't get me wrong, that was a close pitch. But he was getting strikes at the armpits and higher for the majority of the game. Wasn't hard to see that Blue has a high strike zone.
But it was somewhat humorous to hear the announcers talk about how he was making an effort to control his emotions this year.

Nice catch by Burnitz. Sosa wouldn't have got that :).
He's having a good debut in Cubs blue.

Expect Zambrano to regress a bit this season. I still love watching him pitch, but until he gets those emotions in check, he's going to have a huge flaw hanging over his head.
But how about this new small ball Cubbie offense? I know it's one game and against the D-Backs, but to see them post nine on the board before getting a homer, was incredible.

So was the highlight of the day, Ryne Sandberg throwing the "opening pitch" to Mark Grace? For those that don't know, They didn't do the normal opening pitch, and had Ryne Sandberg throw from 2nd to Mark Grace at 1st.

Yeah. It was pretty funny. They had the fake mound setup for the pitch. Then the crowd goaded them into going to the real mound. Then Gracie/Sandberg decided to do it 2B to 1B. They were both miked, so it was pretty fun to watch.
