question for denon 2910 owners

hi! I have a denon 2910 hooked up to my mits 55315 55inch crt rptv. The denon is a great player, but I have noticed one problem that is really bugging me: dark scenes (particularly night skies) look really grainy. I mean just awful. The player is connected via component cable (the tv accepts 480p natively). any ideas?
thanks!!!

I have a Denon 2900. I do know that there are some controls for picture quality in my player. However, if your tv has not been calibrated either professionally or by you with something like Avia or Video Essentials, I would start there first.

Have you tried both black level settings? I forget which is which offhand, but one is correct for Svideo (480i NTSC specifically) and the other is correct for progressive over component or better. Otherwise, calibrate as Brian said. If you don't want to buy a setup DVD (DVE is less than $20, go for it) pull out a THX certified DVD and use the THX optimizer. The best would be ISF calibration for a CRT-based RPTV. Those sets really need it.
