Olivier Marchal's latest production starring two of France's best actors Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu has been set for a May 24th release. The film will be offered in two versions (Collectors set and a single disc version) with optional subs, and DTS. Nominated for 8 Cesar Awards.

Always liked Depardieu, and I'm on-board the Auteuil bandwagon after checking out "Le Bossu", "Lucie Aubrac", "The Widow of St. Pierre", and "The Girl on the Bridge" all in the past 18 months or so. Actually off the top of my head, after Choi Min-sik (though I thought "Springtime" was just okay) and Javier Bardem (though I wasn't too high on "The Sea Inside"), Daniel Auteuil would be next on my as-of-today list of favorite (currently active) actors.

I first became aware of "36 Quai des Orfevres" just a few weeks back when I stumbled across some info. on another board. Glad to see it'll be on DVD very soon.

Note to self: dispatch "DVD Query" e-mail to CD-Wow on May 10th.

Thanks for the info, pro-b -- Depardieu and Auteuil are 2 of my favorites as well. (That cover sure reminds me of "Heat".)

Auteuil's "Apres Vous" is playing at the Spring Hawaii International Film Festival, but I don't think I can go. :(

flixtime, I also highly recommend Auteuil's "La Separation" and "Sade" -- great performances!

Thanks rkndkn for the film recommendations; I'll be sure to pick them up within the next month or so.

Anyone seen "Le Placard" aka "The Closet" again with both Auteuil and Depardieu?

If you liked Le Diner de Cons, also by Francis Veber, you'll like this. It's an enjoyable, clever romp and it also has a "François Pignon" likeable idiot character, this time played by Auteuil.

I own it.

A gay Depardieu....a lost Auteuil...one of the few English friendly films/dvds where you could see the lovely Michele Laroque...a little better than average.

I would very much recommend the Escort...and from the more recent ones the Red Dragon (no English subbed version available).

...and believe it or not...I am impatiently awaiting to see his latest with Anna Mouglalis (NOVO)...Le Prix du Desir which has been getting terrible reviews by the critics...and something tells me I will love it ...currently available on DVD only in Italy.

Man I wish "Red Dragon" were available with English subs. I'm a 100% complete sucker for those olden days adventure-type films. I'll be keeping my fingers-crossed for an English-subbed (unlikely?) release in the future.

I've got some time to kill so I'll step into the Internet confessional: while it might be hard to believe from my recent activity in the forum, before signing up here I was one of those "ignorant" Americans with a disdain for foreign films - French cinema being a particularly easy target (actually, I was only a rather casual fan of cinema before signing up here - but that's another story). Actually maybe I wasn't so bad, I just didn't really give foreign cinema much thought - being only a casual fan of cinema, Hollywood's output more than met my needs. Plus I figured that there couldn't really be much of interest than I'd want to see outside of mainstream U.S films. They say ignorance can be cured but idiocy lasts forever, or something to that effect. I guess you can say I've been cured (thanks too to the medium of DVD which has made the world of foreign cinema so easily available). My wallet however would have preferred I held fast to the adage "ignorance is bliss".

Hmmm... I taped this off (French) TV a month or two back... you've now inspired me to check it out!

According to dvdrama:
http://www.dvdrama.com/rw_fiche-5177-0-36-quai-des-orfevres.php
the french release will offer eng subs.
Could anyone out there to provide more info on the extra features? I assume the disc 2 will not offer eng subs.

O, Yes....both versions will offer English subs for sure. I thought I posted the news way back (mmm...maybe it was Nicheflix...I forget). Here are the extras for the double set/no English subs on them:

Supplément(s):
DVD 1
Commentaire audio d'Olivier Marchal
DVD 2
"Qui veut la peau d'Olivier Marchal ?" (80')
Essais costumes avec les comédiens (17")
Les choix des armes : du Magnum 357 à la Minimi (13')
Les affaires du 36, Quai des Orfèvres (15')
Making of (26')

The single disc offers only the commentary!

Complete info on the two releases here:

edit: Nevermind the subs info is in the initial post at the very top :)

So...has anyone checked this one out yet? I just finished watching it and thought it was good. It felt like a cross - stylistically-speaking - between the American film "Heat" and the Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs", though I don't think it was up to the level of "Infernal Affairs" and perhaps "Heat" too, though it's been a long time since I've watched "Heat". Auteuil and Depardieu were solid but I've seen them do better work and they didn't share as much screen time as perhaps I'd expected (again maybe like Pacino and De Niro in "Heat").

I might have rated the film higher but I didn't care too much for the last 5 minutes or so I thought it was too telegraphed that, before they killed him, the character of Titi gave the bad guys the name of Depardieu instead of Auteuil so you knew they (meaning the bad guys) were going to kill Depardieu, with the only question being if Auteuil is killed by Depardieu before that or not, and one other bone of contention for me occurred earlier in the film - when Auteuil gets out of prison after 7 years, the film did a poor job of showing any passage of time - Auteuil looks exactly the same as the day he went in.

It was a solid and enjoyable film that I'd certainly recommend, but as of this moment - without giving any time for the film to settle - I'd say that I preferred the British film "Layer Cake" and probably also the Korean "Public Enemy 2" a little bit over this one, however there is certainly no shame for "36 Quai des Orfevres" in that comparison; they are all solid films.

It's funny you mention Public Enemy 2 vs 36 as I've seen both within the last 2 weeks myself and I agree. When I purchased 36 I was told it was somewhat like Infernal Affairs so I decided to just pick it up. While I'm not upset I saw it (I was pretty entertained) I'm kind of upset I own the dvd as opposed to have rented it. That being said I think it was much better than the other recent French DVD purchase I've made in the Banaliue 13 (spelling) which was piss poor.

Any possible other edition in the future, say, with more extra features with English sub? R1, Sony perhaps? This should be much better than Angels of Apocalypse 2... or Empire of the Wolves, and still those movies get some extras...

Just watched 36 Quai des Orfèvres. very well produced but incredibly daft in the 2nd half of the film. Just plain silly.

Shame really as it looked a winner. How have other people been getting on with it?

I see Tartan UK have fallen on the fixed DVD region sword sadly as this is stuck as Region 2.

Review of that UK disc here (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews17/36_Quai_des_Orf%E8vres_dvd_review.htm)

I see mention of the quality of the subtitles saying " A significant difference is the translation of the subtitling, where the Edko not is a direct translation of what is said, while Tartan is." I dunno about that! The Edko is bad for sure but Tartan's isn't perfect.

It's a good translation but not necessarily 'direct'.
