I have the previous Japanese R2 two-pack of Mystery Train and Night on Earth but still have my eye on this one.

Are there eng sub, especially night on earth and mystery train ? cdjapan reports eng sub. any confirmation?

I already own the previous Jap 4-disc boxset which is director-approved edition.

I will double dipped only if there is eng sub.

I was going to ask that too. English subs would be necessary for portions of these two films.

Also, anyone know if DEAD MAN has the same problem in the one chapter as the R1 release has? ("stuttering" picture in the campfire scene with Iggy Pop and the gang). Is this only an R1 problem, or are international discs the same?

I couple of years back I bought the R2 "Night On Earth" (British Version) and it had English subtitles for all sections. This version might do the trick for you.

According to Amazon.co.uk it's still available:
