The Kubrick set contains 5 of my favorite movies and I have yet to pick it up. For a while it was about money and now it's about my assumption there will be a reissue. Not to mention the films' inclusion in the box set is keeping me from buying all the great SE / CE / etc like the Strangelove disc.

I'll second the Kubrick stuff, because I'm waiting for anamorphic widescreen releases. There's also a few Criterion boxed sets I'm looking at (like the John Cassavetes one), but the $125 price tag scares me. :(

Quite frankly, I don't have "favorite" movies as such. So the DVDs I get are just those that I like the genre of.

Not to get too far off tangent here, but the whole idea of having a favorite movie, song, piece of artwork, etc, kinda turns me off. It reminds me of the sports fanatic that goes to a game or sports bar dressed in crazy team regalia. eg. Green Bay Packer Cheeseheads. I feel that if someone can honestly say that they have a favorite "whatever" says to me that they're a little close minded to other "items" in that same genre. For example, I belong to the TrekBBS as well, and there are some people who will watch no other sci-fi, but Star Trek. And I find that just to be quite short-sighted and even somewhat bigotted. I feel if you like a title in a certain genre, then you should try other titles in that same genre.

With that said, looking through my DDD wishlist, I don't see a listing that I can honestly say is even close to being a favorite.

Robocop...now of course I'm kicking myself. The Criterion disc was around for a long time, and now...well, y'all know. Now it's only available in the bloody boxset (R1, anyway). MGM: blow me.
Aliens. Aliens. Aliens. I don't know why I don't have it. Why? Now there's the new 2-disc set taken from the Quadrilogy. I must have it. Sigh.
Die Hard. The 4-star collection. Is this still in print?? It had better be.
Someone said Lost Highway--definitely waiting for whomever to get their asses in gear. I hope Lynch is working on a transfer now. Isn't why it takes a while for his films to get to DVD? So. Wild at Heart. Blue Velvet. Twin Peaks--I'm waiting for Paramount to re-release season 1...hopefully with the goddamned pilot.
There are others. The reason? Money. Conspicuous consumption. I don't live in the US at the moment and moving a lot conspicuously consumed crap internationally doesn't make sense. And I'll be moving around a lot. But my short list shouldn't be too difficult.

Yeah, but if I had to just get one version, I would get the Anchor Bay Divimax version instead. Aside from being much cheaper, it has much better picture quality. Supplements are different, but just as informative.

To me, there seems to be quite a difference in being a fan boy of a movie and having a favorite one. For instance, my favorite movie is The Big Lebowski, but I (assuming most people behave the same way) have yet to shut myself off from other comedies and Coen Brothers movies. I would think, if anything, having a favorite movie would only serve to spark you interest in the genre and expand your viewing habits.

Also, I don't think there is anything that I am surprised I have yet to pick up, as of last weekend.

MrE
03-30-05, 12:29 PM
Ditto. I have lots of favorite movies (and even more favorite music), most of which has opened doors to additional movies, not the opposite. For instance, Chinatown opened the door to film noir. Just because a movie is a favorite means neither that I watch it frequently or watch it to the exclusion of anything else.

This is even more true of music, where a favorite artist can lead to predecessors, ancillary groups, followers, similar genres, etc.

The MGM boxset is incredibly cheap (less than 20 dollars). You're really doing yourself a disservice by depriving yourself of it. The Robocop disc has a commentary and tons of great special features.

Of course it goes without saying Robocop 3 can serve as a 104 minute gagreel.

There are a lot of my favorite movies that are out on DVD, but I haven't bought yet. Most are because I'm waiting for a better edition. Some because I've seen them recently in High Definition, so I don't feel like buying a version that goes down a notch in quality. A few are:

Indiana Jones Box Set
The Exorcist (I don't want the "Version I've Never Seen")
Halloween (eventually one of Anchor Bay's annual releases will be the one I spring for -- almost got the last one until I saw how they monkeyed with the colors)
2001
A Clockwork Orange (I can't believe Kubrick's movies don't deserve nice special editions -- plus ACO has been playing on HDTV)
Terminator 1&2 (showing on HDTV, plus the principle of not buying an "Extreme" edition after an "Ultimate" edition has already been released)
Seven Samurai (seems like this film should warrant a special edition)
Babylon 5 and Buffy:TVS (just haven't broken down yet. Farscape and Twilight Zone show that studios are not above double-dipping tv series, so I fear plunking down hundreds of dollars)
Blade Runner (like others here notice, this one screams out "I'll be double-dipped as soon as you buy me!")

Seems to be some common lists, here. Has ANYONE bought Indiana Jones? I noticed I was purchasing films that WEREN'T my favorites while favs languished on wishlists. So I changed that a few months ago, have knocked about a dozen off this list already this year.

Indiana Jones x3
Godfather x3
Last season of Highlander TV show
Highlander Immortal Ed
Bunches of Disney flicks (some for the kids, some for me)
Sound of Music

and yes, I for one have already purchased all of the disney box sets (fantasia anthology, ts toybox, etc.) and BTTF/Indiana Jones trilogies. Can't believe I don't have Star Wars/Star Trek at all yet though. Or that I haven't finished my favorite tv series as listed above. I don't know if you're a dumbass, but you're not the only one waiting on Kill Bill. ;) Seriously though, the current DVDs are pretty cheap, but I heard the picture quality sucks, there are no extras, and having seen the Japanese full color version of Vol. 1, I can't justify getting the B&W cut.

The Graduate is a movie I'm desperate to own on DVD, but MGM refuses to reissue this with a new anamorphic transfer. I don't even need any extras(I have the Criterion LD which includes a terrific audio essay), but it's deserving of at least 16x9 video.

It's funny, andicus, Pink Floyd the Wall was my very first purchase. Before I got my player. It's got a really interesting doc in the extras, worth watching many times. I highly recommend you move it to the top of your queue.

Yeah, I've watched it on my crummy old VHS copy somewhere between 50 and 100 times. I used to put it on just for background. Definitely have to pick it up. Live at Pompeii is another must have for me that I also haven't got yet.

Is the doc in the old or new release, or both? Actually, I just checked Amazon, and it looks like it's in both. Although, the new release doesn't list the commentary in the features. Do you know if it is available in the newer release?
