If anyone still hasn't found a hotel room for the Final4, I will rent you a room at my house (or my parents' house) for the price of one ticket. In addition to to the room and board, you will not have to worry about purchasing food or drink for the duration of your stay in the St. Louis Metro area.

Sheesh. I start all the weekly college hoops threads for the season and someone has to swoop in and start the final one. That's gratitude. ;)

BTW, you should have said March 29 - April 4 since there is another college hoops tournament going on Tuesday and Thursday that 1 or 2 of us will be watching.

I have a dog, and if they don't get along she can be put in her dog-pen in the backyard. But your dog has to stay off my freakin' couch.

I only have one Duke pennant hanging on one wall of my home office. That's it - I'm not 13 anymore and they haven't won any back-to-back championships in a while.

Come to think of it - I don't know anyone w/ tickets to the games this weekend. My soon-to-be-former boss is a U of I alum and he probably has tickets, but I don't give two shits about him really so he doesn't count.

I'm surprised that Carolina and Roy Williams seem to be getting bashed quite a bit this week in the media. Everybody seems to be getting their digs in. Many are predicting an all Big Ten final.

brizz
03-30-05, 10:29 AM
I too have been surprised at how many are giving MSU the edge in this game. I harbor no illusions about this match-up, and quite honestly expect UNC to win fairly easily should they play as well as they are capable. MSU's only real chance is foul trouble and an off night from either May or Felton. But who knows....that's why they play the games. Personally, after all the chest thumping by Big Ten fans, I expect it to be a L'Ville - UNC final.

moorehed
03-30-05, 10:30 AM
yeah i have been surprized too. it seems everyone is picking MSU to beat them... and i'm in UNC country! go spartans.

Red Dog
03-30-05, 12:19 PM
Bettors certainly like MSU getting the pts - they have 57% of the action right now.

The even more amazing stat is that people love (74%) the Over (146-147) in the L'Ville game.

Calculon
03-30-05, 01:49 PM
Well the Spartans did just beat two top-ten teams in three days....

Tommy_Harn
03-30-05, 02:23 PM
I have no problem with MSU being favored. That makes sense. What doesn't make sense are the comments I've been hearing. "They're too lazy", "They don't want it enough", "Roy can't win the big game", "Carolina players are dumb between the ears", etc. Pretty brutal stuff. I'm not sure where all the hatred is coming from.

Red Dog
03-30-05, 02:38 PM
BTW, who exactly is giving MSU the edge? The ESPN 'experts?' The same ones who thought Wake would go deep into the tourney?

For the record, the line is UNC -5.

Red Dog
03-30-05, 02:46 PM
I'm not sure where all the hatred is coming from.

The hate comes because they are UNC, one of the most successful college basketball programs of all time. I certainly hate them. Not as much as I hate the Dookies though.

So I'm watching PTI yesterday and the topic of Matt Doherty and college vacancies is discussed. Can anyone explain to me why UVA would not be interested in this guy? :hscratch:

I think Doherty is going to have to get back into coaching at the mid-major level, not with a team from a power conference. Most larger programs probably are nervous about handing the keys over to a guy who had problems getting through to his players at Carolina. I also wonder if his effectiveness as a recruiter might take a hit after the UNC mess.

MrX

Article in one of the papers today that he's trying to replace Bruce Pearl at UW-Milwaukee.

Tulsa turned him down earlier in the year and Siena said they're not interested. I think the rep he has gotten from the UNC players will hurt him.

That is how it looks, but I just don't understand it. For one thing, UVA is effectively the equivalent of mid-major right now. Why not get a guy familiar with the conference and style of play?

As for Doherty, the guy can obviously recruit - if UNC wins it all, a major part of the reason is Doherty's recruiting. The guy had a good run at Notre Dame as well. While he struggled his last year at UNC, he has certainly proven that he deserves to coach in big time conferences.

And that's a damn shame. It took Roy more than one season to get through to them.

Maybe American Express should help him out by running a commercial plugging the merits of Doherty as a coach, and more importantly, a teacher. That would get him a job.

Don't remind me about this. I don't even want to think about how many times we are going to be subjected to Ratface this Saturday and the Dookies aren't even in the damn thing.

The pope died around 2:58 pm ET. (may have been before..) CBS cut into their coverage at 3:00 pm ET with the news and went to 3:30 pm ET. They then showed "Road To The Final Four-Outside The Games" (orginially scheduled for 3:00 pm ET to 3:30 pm ET) until 4:00 pm ET where they then had a another update along with President Bush talking about the popes passing. CBS then went to their Final Four Pre-Game show sometime around 4:10 pm ET. I would assume there will be a couple of updates later on about the popes passing but none that should interrupt the games.

Go Louisville!
Go North Carolina!

This is pretty much over. Illinois taking control.

If anything, I guess this bodes a little well from MSU. When's the last time the top 2 seeds met in the final? I know the highest scoring team hasn't won in over 40 years....which doesn't bode well for UNC.

Starting to get nervous here....time for a beer, or 7.

prop bets weren't so good, but Illinois -3 was a winnah.

Like State +5 and State ML in the 2nd game. They've gotten past the mental hurdles that were holding them back at times this year. They've always been a top 5 team in terms of talent, and I expect them to further prove that neither of their last two wins were really upsets.

brizz, you'll enjoy this one: I remember prior to that game, ESPN had all these coaches on their pre-game show giving their predictions. EVERY single coach picked Duke to win, except one: then-Michigan "coach" Brian Ellerbe. And basically Fowler, Vitale, and Digger laughed right in his face when he said it.

At least he got one thing right during his coaching tenure.

He's harder to track down than Hoffa's body. Supposedly he still lives in Ann Arbor, I've also heard he lives across the river in Windsor, Ontario.

My favorite "Loserbe" story came right before he got fired. It was obvious he was about to get the axe, and there were (accurate as it turns out) rumors that Michigan and Pitino had mutual interest in each other. On Mother's Day that year, we went to Macaroni Grill to eat in Ann Arbor and were waiting for a table. They had a TV on showing an NBA game, and Pitino was doing studio analysis (having quit the Celtics earlier that year). I said to my brother, rather loudly, "hey, there's Michigan next coach. Please come save us, Rick!". Literally 5-10 seconds later, Ellerbe walks into the restaurant, and the group of us guys standing there watching TV all broke out laughing.

Tear gas used, arrests made
Associated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Police in riot gear used tear gas to disperse a crowd of rowdy Michigan State fans and made several arrests after the Spartans' loss in the Final Four on Saturday night.

Soon after Michigan State lost 87-71 to North Carolina, a crowd of between 500 and 1,000 people gathered in downtown streets and outside apartment complexes a few blocks away, police Lt. Kevin Daley said.

Daley said that as of 1 a.m. Sunday, between 12 and 24 people had been arrested on disorderly conduct charges.

Police tried to break up the crowd before using the tear gas. There had been no violence at that point, but Daley said tear gas is an effective way to scatter a crowd before "it takes on a life of its own."

"The point is to ensure the safety of the downtown area to prevent injury and to prevent property damage," Daley said.

A burning couch was seen near downtown, and Daley said several trash containers had been set afire. No reports of serious injuries had been received as of 1 a.m. Sunday, he said.

In 1999, after Michigan State lost to Duke in the semifinals, more than 10,000 people ran through downtown East Lansing, overturning cars, setting fires and smashing storefronts. Police responded with tear gas and arrested 132 people, including 71 Michigan State students.

Eighteen people were arrested following a disturbance during the 2003 NCAA men's tournament.

Well, got the title game I (and a billion others) had in my money pool. I have UNC winning.

I was 0.5 points behind the leader going in but I don't know his bracket. At any rate the top 3 spots get some cash so I should at least make a few bucks.

Less than 9 hours to go before tip-off. Its been pretty tough to get anything done at work today.

Not only are the Heels going for the National Title tonight, but they'll be playing for the Big Ten Crown as well. They blew out Iowa (and that dick Steve Alford) in the Maui Invitational, outlasted Indiana in the ACC/Big10 Challenge and took out Wisconsin and Michigan State in the tournament. If Minnesota would have beaten Iowa St. in the first round of the tourney, Carolina would have played them also.

Illinois play so hard and so well together. If I weren't a UNC fan, I'd probably be rooting for Illinois. I really think Carolina needs to play a near flawless game, especially on the defensive end. No lapses like the first half vs. MSU.

Taft states plan for draft; Pitt's Krauser likely next

ESPN.com news services

Pittsburgh sophomore forward Chris Taft announced Monday on ESPN2's Cold Pizza he would declare for and stay in the NBA draft.

Taft is declaring for the NBA draft after his sophomore season at Pitt.
Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that he also expected junior point guard Carl Krauser to declare for the draft.

Taft averaged 13.3 points a game and 7.5 rebounds, good for third in scoring and second in rebounding on the team.

Krauser led the Panthers with 16 points and 5.9 assists. Dixon said he doesn't expect Krauser to sign with an agent. Dixon said he would expect Krauser to keep his options open to return to school, but said Krauser told him he wanted to go to the Chicago pre-draft camp in June.

Taft, at 6-feet-10, 260 lbs., is likely to be among the lottery picks in the draft, according to ESPN Insider Chad Ford.

He has the rare combination of size, athleticism, strength and power that had NBA scouts calling him a top-three pick before the season began.

While his lackluster performance during the regular season raised serious questions about his work ethic and attitude, his performance in the first round of the NCAA Tournament should have helped to resurrect his draft stock.

If he can follow up his solid tournament performance with some great individual workouts, Taft's stock will rise. He's not the stellar prospect he was at the beginning of the season, but in the right system, with the right motivation, Taft still has the most potential of any big guy on the board.

Most scouts still have Taft rated between the Nos. 5 and 10 picks.

ESPN.com senior writer Andy Katz and ESPN Insider Chad Ford contributed to this report.

WVU basketball coach John Beilein is headed to the Final Four. He came oh so close to being on the bench for Saturday’s semifinal game, but instead, after the Mountaineers fell to Louisville in overtime in the Elite Eight last weekend, Beilein will be in the stands instead.

John, as well as his son Patrick, will take in the action in St. Louis this weekend, and the Mountaineer new coach will do so with a new contract extension in hand. After leading WVU to the Elite Eight, Beilein was rewarded with a contract extension that runs through the 2011-12 season. His base pay rises to $700,000, and there are also incentive bonus for various things like conference titles, team GPA and Final Four appearances. In addition, there is a $3.5 million buyout for both sides, so Beilein is very secure in his position, and WVU is very secure that its coach will be staying around.

I went in at 9:15 and do my usual buy the half point down to 1.5 (I can't tell you how many times that has made the difference for me. that and buying +1.5 up to +2). Anyway, I got no love because of late action on UNC moved it up to -2.5 right before I submitted. I did find it elsewhere still at -2, so not wanting to take another chance, I just took that

Bogut- 20.4 pts 12.2 boards 2.3 assists 1.9 blks 62% FG 69% FT 36% 3PT

May- 17.3 pts 10.8 boards 1.7 assists 1.0 blocks 56% FG 76% FT 0% 3pt

Yep, and inferior competion isn't why he shot 36% from three and May didn't take a single one.

You can use that to balance out Bogut's advantage in scoring and boards, but not his versatility from the center position, which is what makes him the deserving choice IMO.

Living in NYC, we don't see a ton of Big Ten games. Plus, I don't think that I've ever payed attention to it.

Game over.

Jericho
04-04-05, 11:26 PM
Just my opinion, but Illinois might have won if they had an offense other than to jack threes. Not that many of them were bad shots per se, but it is difficult to consistently make threes, even open threes. Just a few drives would have helped. Congrats to UNC!

This sucks. Nice second half, Illini, but you missed too many open looks. At least they made it interesting.

Oh well, I can't complain too much. I've had a quite a run since March 1: 17-6 and up 34 units.

If Matt Doherty has any more trouble finding a job, all he needs to say is that he recruited the national champs. It's got to get him something better than a mid-major. Everyone deserves a second chance.

People I want shooting for my team, with the championship on the line:
<s>Anyone from Illinois</s>

Aw, who am I fooling. None of my teams, college or pro, in any sport, will be playing for the title any time soon.

Actually this loss shall forever be blamed on my former friend who had been here to watch the last two Illini victories, but for some reason or other went to Krieger's tonight w/ some other people. Kevin - you are a shit-fuck.
