Kyrgyzstan Body Elects Interim President

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - Parliament elected a former opposition lawmaker as interim president of Kyrgyzstan Thursday, hours after Askar Akayev fled the country and reportedly resigned from the post following protests which saw opposition supporters storm government headquarters.
Members of the parliament that was in power before February's election — widely criticized as fraudulent — met to discuss keeping order in the nation and conducting a new presidential vote, perhaps as early as May or June. They elected a former opposition lawmaker, Ishenbai Kadyrbekov, as interim president.

See, it was funny when "The Onion" did this same joke, back in the 90's. (Something about vowels being sent to the Balkans.) And that was funny because the news was full of "unusual" Yugoslav names full of "odd" looking consonant clusters, such as "Republika Srpska."

Now these cracks, and the hundreds of other "clvr" jokes about the supposedly vowel-deficient Kyrgyz language that have been so popular for the last week, are not particularly funny, because they're not accurate. The "y"s in "Kyrgyz" are obviously vowels. I truly wonder how these people are pronouncing "Kyrgyz" if they can't recognise that... Yeah, they need vowels, all right. The nine they have just aren't enough.

Here's an excerpt from Manas, the most famous epic poem of the Kyrgyz (from http://www.silkroadfoundation.org/folklore/manas/manasintro.html):

Bölüngön Jakďp baykushtun
Bödönödöy közünön
Bölöl-bölök jash ketip,
Karagattay közünön
Kamchď boyu jash ketip

From the quail-like eyes
Of poor Jakďp, who was torn apart,
Drops of tears streamed down,
From his black-currant eyes
Streamed tears the length of a whip.

Vowels galore.
