Critic's TV picks for Wednesday
By Gail Pennington
Post-Dispatch Television Critic
Wednesday, Mar. 23 2005

At work in a fast-food restaurant called Yippee Hot Dogs,
Spoiler:
18-year-old Fred
(Charlie Finn) is staring sympathetically at the fries as they fry. "It must be
so hot in there," he comments to his friend Laz (Zachary Knighton). "And look
how crowded it is." But as Laz points out: "They're potatoes. Before this, they
were buried alive. And considering where they're going next, this is their
party."

Silly? Yes, in a droll way. Stupid? Well, sure. But the new Fox sitcom
"Life on a Stick" (8:30 p.m. on Channel 2) is a little like junk
food - so bad, and yet ... kinda good.

Spoiler:
The set-up has Laz, a bright slacker, getting a post-high school job flipping
burgers (well, technically, dipping corn dogs) to avoid figuring out what to do
with his life. In addition to Fred, his sweet but dimwitted best friend, Laz
has a frustrated father and stepmother (Matthew Glave and Amy Yasbeck), an edgy
stepsister, Molly (Saige Thompson) and a smart little half-brother much beloved
by the parents. He also has a crush on Lily (Rachelle Lefevre), his co-worker
at the hot dog stand.

From Victor Fresco, who created "Andy Richter Controls the Universe," "Life"
has a bit of that cult hit's whimsy and even a smidgen of its wit. But this
more mainstream venture (think "That '70s Show") also has plenty of broad (and
did I mention stupid?) humor for the targeted audience of younger viewers.

Blah! Fox's website says that now, too. Thanks.

WTH happened w/ American Idol that would screw up the schedule?

They displayed incorrect phone numbers for the last 3 contestants last night, so all votes from last night do not count. They are re-airing the same thing tonight with correct numbers.

From the previews, it looks idiotic. However, I may watch just to confirm.

You could always scrounge around for some old episodes of Big Wolf on Campus!

Great job, Fox. Bump the premiere so it's going against NBC's premiere of The Office.

(yes, I'm mad because, since I ReplayTV everything I watch, I didn't get LoaS, just a crappy AI rerun)

It wasn't utterly horrible. The hot middle sister was lame asking the uglier girl what it was like to be pretty. WTF was that about.

I only laughed once during this episode and that was when the father told his son that he was going to punish him by sticking his head into the toilet until he passed out.

Other than that, this show deserves a big thumbs down.

Not good. It's not on "The Mullets" level of criminal stupidity, but still bad.

I thought I was the only one who noticed that. What about that youngest brother? He was bizarre looking and I had a hard time understanding what he was saying. It was like his teeth were too big for his mouth. He must be a producer's nephew or something. I've definitely seen worse shows, but I probably won't watch it again.

Oh my god this show was horrible. The laugh track had me about ready to smash my tv, so I turned it off after about 10 minutes. Too bad, too, because the deep frying of all the stuff in the manager's office made me laugh during the preview. But the timing and delivery of all of the characters was SO very bad - and forced - that even the deep frying joke fell flat (I happened to flip back right when that part came on). Jesus, bring back Wonderfalls, Greg the Bunny, Point Pleasant, Tru Calling, Harsh Realm, Firefly...practically ANY show would be better than this, but those shows ranged from decent (point pleasant) to fantastic (GtB,WF,Firefly).

Don't forget The Tick. I'd love to have that back.

Eh, it was alright.

How many episodes will air before FOX cans it?

I say it gets renewed. Merely because the lack of other programming. Seems like they're killing more things then saving.

Is there any case of a successful sitcom based on such a "wacky" premise? That aren't kids shows? Even that show "Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Parlor" learned to change it's name in the second season to even have a chance to be taken seriously.
