I usually have only watched old foreign films but started getting into the new ones lately. I absolutly loved internal affairs. Loved everything about it. I thought zatoichi was good but not great and I thought tae guk gi brotherhood of war was great, but didn't like it as much as internal affairs.

The only other one's I've thought about getting is Shiri and Warriors of heaven and earth. Are they as good?

any more recomendations?

you might want to start a Nicheflix account, I've thought about it recently as I dont' want to drop the dough on all these imports / non-region 1 dvds as they aren't cheap. I would probably have to drop netflix as I can't sustain both subscriptions at the same time.

As for all that have been mentioned so far, I haven't seen Zaitochi yet but heard its good, Infernal Affairs loved it and have it, don't hear as much love for the sequels but some do like them. Mixed stuff on Tae Guk Gi and I, myself, was disappointed with it. It had its parts (mostly the beginning and middle) but there were points where it just seemed way over dramatic, especially the last 45 min or so, just horrible IMHO. Shiri is OKAY, not great like some have claimed. Haven't seen Warriors yet. Musa is good but not exactly must-have, Zhang Ziyi is in it but does not kick any butt =*( Twilight Samurai is a solid flick but might not hold up to repeated viewings.

From Korea, My Sassy Girl, hilarious romantic comedy. Old Boy is great but beware its not for all, some may be turned off by the taboo in this film but it is must-see, a classic it is destined to be. Friend aka Chingu, great story about friends growing up together, some say they've seen this type of movie/plot before but even then, great performances that make it good on its own. Joint Security Area is also good and from the Park Chan-wook who made Old Boy. Silmido I have and it is decent.

From Japan, Battle Royale, the first not the 2nd, is another classic, will NEVER come to the US.
From China/Hong Kong, Shaolin Soccer is great, Stephen Chow is hilarious, I've got to check out his hundreds of other films =) Hero is good, House of the Flying Daggers not so good.

Only bad thing about non-region is even if you get the special edition with all the extras, they usually aren't subbed !!! so unless you understand the language, you're shit out of luck. you could get the R2 (UK) versions which should be subbed but then you have to deal with PAL and its speedup, which to some is bothersome =\

oh and as far as Ong Bak, might as well wait for the US release, and possibly rent it. Great fights and Tony Jaa is great but plot and story I've heard are weak and probably are. (I have the thai version and well, no version has english subs anyway). It probably isn't too far off as its theatrical release is done by now plus its been edited to improve pacing and and soundtrack altered I think (don't worry bout the edits, doubt you'd miss much and they wouldn't dare edit the fights).

I give Old Boy my vote as well - very very good film.

I'm a big fan of Beat Takashi, the man behind Zatoichi - would highly recommend Sonatine which is an absolute classic.

Also, Mood For Love is excellent though I've yet to see 2046.
