awesome! I didn't think they'd have a new album so soon after "Train of Thought". Although, I guess that was... 13 November 2003. Wow... didn't realize it'd been that long. Thanks for the info!

This is from guitarist John Petrucci:
"The album before this we wrote in the rehearsal period, constructed all the songs and then went into the studio and recorded them. The style from song to song was pretty consistent; that album was pretty dark and heavy and very riffy, sort of metal [or] progressive metal-sounding. This one we wrote in the studio, and I think that stylistically from song to song it's more diverse."

Prog rockers Dream Theater tallied 16 years as a band with the release of Octavarium, but in listening you're apt to suspect otherwise. As a collective they remain as tight as they were on 2003's obsessively dark Train of Thought (like all music-school outfits, they've exacted an all-for-one formula that doesn't allow a single player more than his share of swagger), but a post-hardcore edge — call it a leap into 2005 — has invaded their pledge of allegiance to theatrical heavy rock. Hear it on "I Walk Beside You" and "The Answer Lies Within," both of which, at under five minutes, play like charming haikus from a band known for its epic poetry, and also on the orchestra-backed 20-plus-minute final cut, which skips around from Pink Floyd to Rush to Black Sabbath influences, stopping off every so often at a place fans of My Chemical Romance might find familiar. As with all the band's discs, guitars loom large and both doom and redemption seem no further than the next twisted verse. What's changed is Dream Theater's commitment to carrying on their reputation as underground progressive rock's classicists, and it seems well-timed.

Elements of Persuasion. It is a great disc. Very Dream Theater(Awake or Train of Thought style) like. I've been listening to it pretty much non-stop for 3 weeks. It is a much better album than both of his Mullmuzzler discs. I'd probably put it near the top of their side projects list next to O.S.I., LTE, and an Evening with... John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess. Top notch, I highly recommend.
I can't wait for Tuesday. New DT material, awesome.
I was wondering if any reviews would start trickling in. Not a mention in Blender. Not that I was surprised, they never reviewed Queensryche's last one and they are the more mainstream band.

I've listened to it a few times through...
I'd drop:
"The Answer Lies Within" -- preachy/whiny
"I Walk Beside You" -- seems like a forced song to try and get radio play. It's okay, but I think it will get old real quick.
Other than those 2, I think it's pretty solid album.
I like the guitar work on Panic Attack. Octavarium (song) starts out kinda weak, but picks up pretty good, reminds me of some old "Yes" songs.

I like DT but for some reason I only have a couple of their discs and the Petrucci/Rudess cd. Is LaBries cd more mellow or heavier than DT?

His first two CDs are pretty mellow with heavy parts. This one is like Awake or Train of Thought. Mostly heavy with some mellow parts. It will hook you from the first track.
I wouldn't recommend all of thier "spin-off" CDs, but this one I would without a doubt. Pick it up.

Did anybody else pick this up today? I tried, but in some strange stroke of mystery, my local CC, BB, and Tower were out of stock.

I ordered it from Amazon today. I've had the leaked copy since it first surfaced, so I'm in no hurry.

I did. BB had 3 copies. None of which were on the new release wall. You have to look in the regular stock of CDs to find it.
I need to listen to it a few more times before I make any solid judgements. On first listen I agree with the posts above, "The Answer Lies Within" and "I walk Beside You" just leave me scratching my head. They sound like deliberate attemts at being radio friendly. tALW is eerily similar to "Anna Lee," so much so when I listened to tALW in my car and then came in my house after work, I had the lyrics to "Anna Lee" repeating in my head. I haven't listened to that song in ages. Kinda funny.
"The Root of All Evil" is part 3 in the AA magnum opus. Pretty good. Doesn't grab you immediately like a first track should, but it was already growing on me after a second listen.
"These Walls" sounded pretty solid on the first listen.
"Octavarium" starts out with an Ayreon feel. Actually it sounds a LOT like Moodswings(if anyone has heard them). Which is a different direction for DT. Very cool.

I got mine yesterday at CC. It seems ok. This seems to be the first DT effort that I didn't instantly love. About the comments that they are attempting for radio airplay, in what format? I don't hear anything that could be played in rotation with any current artists of today. Maybe you could play The Answer Lies Within on some Adult Contemporary station after an Air supply or Bread song.

How about "I walk beside you?" That has U2 written all over it.
Not saying I don't like, but it could be a radio song. There is nothing "proggy" about it. It's not heavy in any way either.

Yeah, you're right. But when I turn on the radio (I admit not frequently) I always seem to catch some heavy low-B percussive riffing (a DT specialty) with some throaty growl for a vocal. Not polished songs like that one. btw, Panic Attack rocks :rock2:

I'm glad I bought this album. At first I was upset that it wasn't heavy like Train Of Thought but almost immediately I forgot about that complaint and I ended up loving ever single track. It's their most accessible album, I think, so I'll use to slowly acclimate some of my friends to Dream Theater and then let 'em listen to Scenes From A Memory.
