MAME Challenge #34 (3/20-3/31) Testing Out New Format

MAMEbowl XXXIV is over!
These threads have been getting slow, so time to make some changes. No more retro designation, just any games from Mame, and it probably won't be changing weekly anymore.

The NEW Rules (still a work in progress):
  1. To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
  2. The deadline to post your high scores will be the last day of the month.
  3. The winner can pick any game from MAME that we haven't already played (no clones either)
  4. Any scores should be played with one credit and no continues or any features that you wouldn't get by playing the actual machine.
  5. If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous games we've played you can submit them here to start the All Time Top Scores List.

Download MAME to play the games.
New to MAME? Feel free to ask questions here or read the tutorials
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Gorf - Score to beat: Roto 15440

I'm Sorry (US) - Score to beat: gimmepilotwings 123534

Metal Slug - Super Vehicle-001 - Score to beat: Lampei 241190

Pole Position (Atari version 2) - Score to beat: D300 43470

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the current games picks the next game that replaces it. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

The Winners:

I'm guessing nobody is playing last week's games and it's safe to move on. If anybody's still playing Ring King, or Marble Madness you still have until 9:00 Eastern time tonight, and I'll go ahead and update everything.

This thread is going until the end of the month, so I added a game. If anybody can come up with something better than Metal Slug, I might change it today, but I don't think anybody is actually here

sorry, new to this and can't find the exact file I need to download for MAME. Could you tell me where on the site the actual emulator file is? Thanks.

All the different versions of MAME are listed here http://www.mame.net/downports.html

Assuming you are using Windows, it's the first link on that list: http://www.classicgaming.com/mame32qa/

You want the one that says Mame32v.94 Binary. That will take you to fileplanet.com which you will have to sign up for to download the file. It's free, but fileplanet also has a premium paid service, which is why they require a login.

Always good to see a new face!

If you've played it, then where is your score? Fine, I'll start it.

If you think Gorf is hard, try Pole Position with a keyboard.

Isn't that breaking Rule 4? I thought you would have to use the mouse to steer.

You think using the keyboard is an advantage? Pole Position doesn't use a mouse It'd be much easier if I had a spinner and some pedals. I'd say it's an even tradeoff for this game and just a matter of preference. This isn't exactly World Class Bowling.

It sucks for screenshots. The car disappears before your score is final.

I haven't even tried the mouse yet. I tried an xbox gamepad first and gave up on that idea.

I'd lovve to play in the retro game challenge or the MAME challenge, but my mame machine is in my basement, and it's not networked. So i'd have to take a pic with my digicam, then host it and post it here.

What the hell, I'll give it a try with Gorf.

My MAME computer isn't networked either.
I just transfer the screenshots to a thumb drive to post them here.

What level is that? I don't think I've ever got past level 2. Are those fire hydrants?

That's level 4... I got to level 5, just didn't have enough points. How the hell did you find this game? It's... interesting to say the least.

Oh noes! You got caught my Wacko Jacko!
I'm pretty sure I played it when it first got added to Mame. It was added when there were still a lot of popular games that hadn't been emulated, so I was keeping up with new releases.

Is the zip file ok? Can you extract the files? That was all I did to check it. I downloaded it and the zipfile opened ok. It's the biggest one I've hosted at 12.5MB. Has anybody else that downloaded Metal Slug from my site gotten it to work?

Just for future reference, There is a 25 MB limit on my Comcast account, so if anybody ever picks a game bigger than that you guys are going to have to get the rom somewhere else. People are going to have to do that anyway to play any of the older games for the free for all. I put links on my site to a few places. I would suggest PlayAgain if you're just looking for a few, or the Petrified's Torrent site if you want everything.

Metal Slug requires both the rom and the neo geo bios files. You should make sure both zips are in your roms directory.

I posted the neogeo.zip file on the site, but when I put them both in an empty mame roms directory it passes the audit and still doesn't run for me. I probably ruined my own set of roms trying to use clrmame pro to merge all of them

Hmm.. I have the neo geo.zip but I still can't get the graphics to work. The game itself works but this is what I see...

And here's level 6 of I'm Sorry for Roto....

That was more than what mine did. With my copy of mame that I use regularly and have all the roms for, Metal Slug runs fine, but if I just take a new copy of mame and put the mslug.zip and neogeo.zip in the roms directory it doesn't load the game even though it says all of the files are there. It goes through the bar graph, but never leaves the Windows desktop.

I'll try to get this figured out before the weekend if nobody else does.

I used both files you posted on my laptop and they worked fine. Perhaps it's the version of MAME?

Well as long as it works for you now then I'm not going to worry about it unless somebody else says something. My computer must be having some other problem with it. I didn't bother digging too deep into it.

I don't have a Mac, so I can't really help devilshalo troubleshoot his problems. Not unless he wants to buy me one of those Mac Minis The only advice I can offer is try installing a new copy of mame and download the roms from some other source like playagain.net.
