I think I'm probably the only person out there who liked The Incredibles as little as I did, so I decided to make a thread to see if anyone agrees with me. I also added a poll for which is your favorite.

The Movies:
Bugs Life, A
Finding Nemo
Incredibles, The
Monsters, Inc.
Toy Story 1
Toy Story 2

My Rankings:
Toy Story
Finding Nemo
Monsters, Inc.
A Bug's Life
Toy Story 2
The Incredibles

Wow, I'm almost completely inverse to you:

The Incredibles
Toy Story 2
Finding Nemo
Monsters Inc.
Toy Story
A Bug's Life

This is difficult because I really didn't dislike any of them - quite the opposite as I love them all. I was amazed that I enjoyed the Incredibles as much as I did - I never thought any Pixar film could be better than Toy Story 2 in my book.

No need to rank, I like them all about equally.

1) "The Incredibles" - James Bond/Spy Kids/Superhero theme works. Maybe I like it more because it's more for older kids.
2) "Monsters Inc." - A really sweet story about the "monster" world which hides in every kid's closet. Pulled some heartstrings at the end there.
3) "Toy Story 2" - Sequel better than the original. Sarah McLachlan song highlight of the movie. Really touching.
4) "Finding Nemo" - Good, solid movie. But, seems like just another cute movie put underwater. Almost like "Shark Tale" more because of its edginess.
5) "Toy Story" - Very good, solid original. Looks dated by today's standards. Great music by Randy Newman.
6) "A Bug's Life" - Unfortunately, I saw this movie after seeing "Finding Nemo." Maybe "A Bug's Life" looked good after "Toy Story" came out. But, it doesn't hold up after time.

My list changes on a daily basis, but I'd say

1) Toy Story 2/Monsters Inc... I can't choose which one I like better
2) The Incredibles... so close to being number 1 it's not even funny
3) Toy Story
4) Finding Nemo
5) A Bug's Life

My rankings:

1) Toy Story 2 - This was an incredible effort by Pixar in outdoing the original. Excellent performances by everybody involved including the new characters by Kelsey Grammer, Wayne Knight and Joan Cusack.

2) The Incredibles - Best Superhero movie yet.

3) Toy Story - Pixar hit a homerun with their first movie. Still holds up after repeated viewings.

4) Finding Nemo - All I have to say is that this movie made care for Ellen Degeneres.

5) Monsters Inc. - The animation was excellent but the story really didn't click for me.

6) A Bug's Life - It was a good movie but doesn't hold up against the other Pixar movies.

Unfortunately, I thought the teaser of the new Pixar movie "Cars" was bad so I'm hoping that I'm wrong and it proves to be a worthwhile experience.

Although, I ranked "A Bug's Life" last, it still stands head above water to recent computer animated movies released by other studios.

My top two are the only ones I feel I need to own, although I picked up the Toy Story two-pack because I found it for an excellent price. The Incredibles didn't do much for me either way, and the lead characters in Finding Nemo annoyed the hell out of me, to the point where I have no desire to see it again.

I seem to agree with quite a few people here for the most part.

#1. The Incredibles
#2. Toy Story 2
#3. Finding Nemo
#4. [saved for future Pixar release]

I'm not huge on Finding Nemo, but it's a beautiful movie. Not big on the bottom 3 from Pixar.

1. Toy Story- First cgi film was the best. No contest.

2. Toy Story 2- Almost as good, but not quite.

3. Monsters Inc.- Excellent film. Best non-Toy Story film by Pixar.

4. The Incredibles- Really good, but could have been more. Overrated because its a Brad Bird superhero flick.

5. Bugs Life- Really disliked it at first but now I really enjoy it.

6. Finding Nemo- Waaaaay overrated. A good movie. Excellent visuals but the worst Pixar script by a mile.

The Sarah MacLachlan song in TS2 is really what does it. As a longtime toy collector, this whole movie really got to me, and I've actually changed my ways wrt my toy collections and such. I've sold off a lot of my stuff and really think twice before picking up anything new.

A Bug's Life has a lot of little moments just do it for my wife and I. Our favorite? "Burn him again!"

Toy Story : Always new my toys were playing behind my back.

Incredibles : As a comic book fan I love this movie.

Toy Story 2 : Everybody had to be touched by how good this movie is, Sara's song make this one a winner.

Monster's Inc : Once again I always new something was in my closet.

Finding Nemo : Now that I am a father, I relate to Marlin(Albert Brooks).

Bug's life : This movie has it's moments, but Pixar's first miss.

- Toy Story

it should be noted that I've barely watched the last 2 on my list. Maybe once or 1 1/2 times at most. The others I've watched numerous times. Nothing will unseat The Incredibles at the top though, I just love it for its matureness, intelligence (signs of Brad Bird's touch) and of course the special effects goodiness once the superheroes get going. The one thing I hate about it is theres not enough action !! I'd love another hour of it !! and if I could put Iron Giant on here, it'd be #2.

6. Finding Nemo- Waaaaay overrated. A good movie. Excellent visuals but the worst Pixar script by a mile.

I would rank this as the best Pixar script, and by a pretty good margin.

I just saw The Incredibles tonight for the first time. Ultimately, I was a little disappointed. I expect a fair number of laughs from Pixar films and this script was too short in that department.

I really disliked Monsters Inc... the rest I liked alot. Can't pick a favorite - the only standout is Monsters Inc as being one I didn't like. I think it had alot to do with the voices of the two mains. If Pixar does a movie with Robin Williams, I'll probably hate that too. They haven't yet, have they?

NestoJR
03-20-05, 05:06 AM
even if they wanted to, Robin seems to stay away from that sort of stuff in the last several years, he likes dark comedies or something.

Just watched Incredibles again =) next time I'll listen to the commentary. and yes it had less laughs than their other films, thats cuz Brad Bird was behind it. Iron Giant didn't have as much laughs but still was a good movie overall with a very human, personal feeling to it. Both flowed very well w/o the "abundance" of laughs. I don't like when it feels like a scene is random, doesn't really fit into the story and seemed to be there simply to give the audience a chuckle. Even worse is when a character appears to be in a movie simply as a comedic element.

Using my handy dandy open office sheet. Here are the averaged rankings, thus far. Not including anyone who didn't clearly list an order, or had ties, or left a title out.

Toy Story 2 - 2.62
Toy Story - 3.29
Monster, Inc. - 3.71

It'll be a shutout, with Cars taking all the votes.

Incredibles is really really good, although it's more of an action-comedy than the more straight comedies of the past Pixar efforts. It's still got some good humor in it, although it's much more subtle and requires a bit of familiarity with Superhero conventions. As my friend put it, "only Pixar would make a film where the climax is a family fighting over the remote."

Some of my favorite parts from The Incredibles aren't even jokes or action sequences, but individual shots. In the opening interview clips, I LOVE that Mr Incredible lunges towards the camera and he goes out of focus. Another, at the end when the family rushes back into their house, I love the "hand-held" shot of them racing to the front door. It just shows a mastering of filmmaking techniques that extends outside what is standardly used for animation.

As for ranking, it's so hard since I've enjoyed them all, and they're all very clsoe in quality. I think I have to put my favorite as the under appreciated Bugs Life.

In all fairness, is the level of humor the only way to rate Pixar films?

In all fairness, is the level of humor the only way to rate Pixar films?Nope. The picture looked and sounded better than all their previous efforts. Trumps them exponentially. But IMO - and some others, not many but some - it wasn't as enjoyable as many of the others.

As for cars, from the looks of it, a lot of people are expecting it to be a flaming pile. I hope it isn't, but to me it couldn't be worse than The Incredibles. Pixar is allowed a flub. Get back in the game, though.

Get back in the game, though. Not a flaming pile as compared to other movies but maybe a lackluster effort for a Pixar film. It's their last one under their current contact with Disney so you know their heart won't be in this one as much as their previous efforts.

That said, I still think it'll be pretty entertaining.

1) The Incredibles (Just incredible - but I'm a huge fan of Connery Bond films and Superhero movies, so this was right up my alley)
2) Toy Story 2 (Great sequel, just an amazing film)
3) Toy Story (The animation is dated by current standards, but the story holds up quite well)
4) Finding Nemo (Could've done without the "goody-goody" parts, but the rest is pretty good)
5) Monsters Inc. (Although this came in 5th, my #3 - #5 ranked movies are really close together)
6) A Bug's Life (This one is a distant 6th. Too much of the "goody-goody" weakness found in smaller parts in other Pixar movies, and I didn't like the story too much - the original version pitched on the DVD actually sounded better. But it does have the Grasshoppers, and they rock!)

Actually, I was thinking more about story, characters, drama, suspense, and action than sound and visuals. It may not be my favorite, but it was definately as enjoyable as the others, albeit enjoyable in a different way.

As for cars, from the looks of it, a lot of people are expecting it to be a flaming pile.
People were predicting that Finding Nemo was going to be a flaming pile "from the looks of" the teaser. In fact, people have been predicting a Pixar dud since Toy Story 2. It's hard to judge the quality from a preview released a year before the film. I doubt that Pixar will be phoning this one in, especially with John Lasseter back at the helm.

Daniel-A
03-20-05, 11:52 PM
Agreed. I'd expect Pixar to go out with a bang not a fizzle. I don't see what benefit they would be doing to anyone if they phoned it in. A solid film is better for the fans (duh), Disney (mor ca$h), and Pixar. Whether or not Pixar makes a new deal with Disney, a good last film will make sure everyone keeps an eye out for them, or can seal the new deal with Disney.

I'm hoping all the pre-show antihype is unjustified. They have a nice voicing cast thus far, but I'm not sure what kind of story they can come up with. The only thing I've seen about cars thus far was the clip from the Incredibles DVD. If that is what people are basing their opinions on, I can see why.

well that's why I liked it as much as I did, it never sank to a humour level that felt forced (i.e, Dreamworks dreadful Shark's Tale). Pixar succeeds in my mind because they can focus on a tight script and improve it on both visually and introspectifully.

Interesting. My boyfriend and I actually rank them the same, which is drastically different from the poll results.

1. Finding Nemo
2. tie - Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc.
3. tie - Incredibles, Bug's Life

We liked the incredibles (as with all Pixar films) but prefer our superheroes in WW/Batman/Spiderman form (esp. Bruce Timm/Sam Raimi incarnations). While thoroughly enjoyable, we felt The Incredibles was a pretty slow starter (after the opening was over). It doesn't have quite the same heart and rewatchability as the other pixar films in my 1 and 2 slots - and definitely not as much as Brad Bird's masterpiece, Iron Giant.

My favorite Incredibles characters - Edna, the babysitter, and the little kid on the trike. :D Their scenes are also my favorites, along with the ending race. Loved the shorts - both boundin and jack jack attacks. Up there with the fantastic For the Birds.
