Through doing some research via Google, I got sidetracked and stumbled onto a site where people posts autographed photo's from celebrities. Apparently they either sent a photo they had--or maybe just wrote them requesting a signed photo--and within a month or two received that signed photo back.
I'm curious, has anyone else done this? It never even occured to me but I guess could be cool.
Ever get a signed photo or letter back? If you got a photo signed, did you send them a photo, or did they just send you a generic professional signed photo of themselves?

probably not what you're looking for but John Carpenter was my mentor -- this was set up by USC. we write letters back and forth every now and then. met for coffee once.

Tons of times. I collect celebrity autographs (actors/actresses only), & although I get most of mine in-person & do get some through the mail.
A couple of odd recent ones I got back that were out for almost a year, are Christian Bale & Ken Watanabe from the set of Batman. Bale personlized a photo I sent him, & Watanabe was weird, he didn't sign the photo (it was from last Samurai, but I got a card with his own personal stationarly & a short letter where he wrote thank you so much for embracing The Last Samurai & his work & then signed sloppily in English & then again in his language. When I send stuff out, I only do it to movie sets or plays (which are the best), b/c I figure they are legit, you know the actor is there & probably reads their fan mail.
Recently I just got back Ashley Judd, who signed an 8x10 photo I mailed over 1 year ago when she was on Broadway, the return address came from Kentucky so its probably where she lives.

I get mail for Hayden Christiansen asking for autographs. Purely by mistake as they addressed it to our studio instead of the correct address. I usually forward them on tho I've been tempted to send photos of my poop back with the tagline, "I used the force." :D

I used to request signed photos of celebrities when I was in Jr. High. I didn't send photos of them. I just sent SASEs, but usually they would just send their the photo in their own envelope though. I usually would end up receiving them from celebrities I didn't really care about, but had contacted via email, like Emme or Bill Nye. One time I received a photo from Christian Slater though which was really cool. I received one from Charlie Sheen like 3 years after I had sent out the SASE.

I have a ton of 8x10 photos (if I had a scanner I'd post some autographs), I use to collect them in person, I still do not as much though, & I don't mean people in person like some midget from Star Wars, I have Johnny Depp, Halle Berry, Cate Blanchet, Keira Knightly, Kate Hudson, Al Pacino, Ashley Judd, & a ton more. But then a friend of mine told me about doing some through the mail.

There is a website called Star Archives, you have to pay to use it though & it updates with film sets all the time. The Batman set I think was in Prague.

I just use two 9x12 envelopes that I get from work, a short letter like a paragraph Dear so & so, your my favorite actor I love this film, & an 8x10 photo that I like. Simple as that & its fun when you get home from work one day & see a returned envelope in the mail. A lot of people, probably most mail to celeb's agencies, for instance Clint Eastwood supposivel is really popular with collectors. I never do this, IMO you are getting a fake autograph, some secretary is doing it. I only mail to plays or movie address (although most times you don't get anything back from movie sets) plays are great, I got Kevin Spacy & Ian McKellan both from England a couple of weeks ago.\
It's just a fun little thing to do that is different. I'm a movie fanatic, as most are here that post, & my office at work & my TV area at home is the envy of all that see it.
Edited, if you ever wanted to do this now is a great time to start. Right now on Broadway you have Ethan Hawke, Ben Stiller, Amanda Peet (who I got in-person & my picture w/ her), Jeff Goldbloom, Hank Azaria, Tim Curry, Christian Slater (also in person & a picture w/ him, very nice), David Hyde Pearce, William Sadler & the biggest right now Denzel Washington just to name a few.

I did this for a while a few years ago. My favorite piece was from Charlton Heston. It was a picture from "The Planet of the Apes" of he and Kim Hunter (Dr. Zira) kissing. It is signed by he and Ms. Hunter. It is my prize item in my home theater. Never fails to get a double take when people first see.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the thread but I just had to let you know I just watched the trailer for your film and I am seriously hooked! I hope that the screening goes exceedingly well! I'm sure it's far too early to talk about the film's availability on DVD however, when you have that info, please count me in as a purchase! This is easily one of the best trailers I have ever seen. It pulls you into the piece immediately all the while whetting your appetite without giving away anything! Excellent! Anyway, enough with the school-girl gushing. It looks great and I can't wait to actually watch the film in its entirety.

I'm not into autographs, but I have 4 - all of them gotten in person.
1. Mr. Macintosh - "the man who invented stereo" (as my dad called him) signed an owner's manual for this ancient tube macintosh amp. He was a neighbor.
2. Pete Uberoth - when he was commissioner of baseball, he signed a baseball for me - my dad was college roommates with him.
3. Mr. T - I met him at E3 - he was coked out according to his bodyguards - he gave me a signed picture.
4. Bruce Campbell - also at E3 - I had him sign the McFarlane Ash doll thing.
I've met and hung out with and exchanged emails and phone calls with plenty of minor celebrities, but never got an autograph.

when i was a kid we had to write letters to celebrities. I wrote to fred savage, and recieved back a letter thanking me for my kind letter, a post card personalized that read something to the effect of "Cameron, Hope all of yours are Wonder Years." and another card with the entire cast autographs.
I also wrote to TMNT comics and recieved a post card from kevin eastman.

You just made me remember that I used to work in a video store in Kansas City one summer and the owner was good friends with Phil Collins. I used to have to go through fan letters and pull out any that were interesting/beyond the pale. I entered all the fans' addresses in a database (1989) for sending back club mail... no clue how often he'd sent back photos, especially since he lived overseas.

I have about 100 autographs I have gotten from celeb's through the mail, some are signed pics, some just sign 4x6 note cards, some inscribe photos to me too, its been a lot of fun.....still working on getting them all framed though.

Not exactly a well-known celebrity but when I was ordering a copy of August Underground I included a letter that I signed in fake blood along with blood splotches. Much to my surprise I received my movie along with a letter written by the "director/star" Fred Vogel. Here's a photo of the letter (I blurred a part of the "stationary" so it's forum-safe). A little scotch tape fixed that.

I just tried to contact a 'celebrity' - an old friend of mine I was in a band with for a few years... wanted to catch up and shit. I emailed and asked him why he hasn't been calling me back and ended with 'douche' giving him a hard time for not calling. He told me he's been busy and that I pissed him off and to get a life... what a diva.

That's awesome. I've adored Ford since I was in Jr. High & saw the Star Wars trilogy for the first time, because of the rereleases. I was so into Indiana Jones. I was at Disney World a few years ago & was really excited, because I got picked out of the audience to participate in the Indiana Jones stage show.

I was heavy into collecting autographs when I was younger. I had a decent rate of success...some would send photos or index cards and others would sign a picture that I included. I still have them all to this day and enjoy looking through them from time to time.

I went through a huge "autograph collecting" stage and was getting 2 or 3 autographs back through the mail everyday, i finally called a halt around the time of the sars scare when i started getting them back unopened and never got the mojo again. I got 100's. Your best bet is middling to lesser know celebs (or ones on their way up, i got Angelina Jolie and lots of others when they were just starting), the bigger the star, the more chance you'll get back a pre-printed, autopen or stamped auto (most of the A listers will send back a fake), their used to be tons of sites with addresses (better to find one that lets you know if you'll get back something, sometimes they won't respond at all) you don't need to send a photo just a sase, i used to get mocked for my hobby back then but i don't care (-:
