I think Singer said he intended this movie to be a continuation of the first two movies? I also thought he said they weren't going to retell the origin story, which means these shots must only be used for quick flashback sequences? (I'm getting this information from the Wizard interview with Singer in the most recent issue).

Maybe they are going to do a once over refresher at the beginning of the film. Either during the credits or a 10-15 minute sequence.

I read an Eva Marie Saint interview where she confirmed that she plays a widow in the film, in keeping with the timeline of the first two films. So the Kent farm isn't necessarily limited to a "flashback" sequence.
and if anyone is interested, Singer will be doing KongIsKing-esque production video-diaries from the set at Blue Tights Network (http://www.bluetights.net/bulletin_list.php)

OK, I guess I've been out of the loop on this one.
I knew they were starting with it (finally), but I thought it was a 'reimagining' of the story, not a continuation of Superman I & II. Am I wrong? And if it is a continuation, why would they bother refilming something like the ship crash... couldn't they just use existing footage (for flashbacks, whatever)?
Is there a web site somewhere that'll explain to me just what the plan is for this? Those pictures now have me officially intrigued. :)

Well, after the latest news, can't say I'm excited about this film. First came the awful casting of Routh and Barton. Now Singer, after saying he wants to pick the story up after Superman 2, is throwing the story all out of whack.
This comes from latinoreview.com:
"While Superman has been gone on a 6 year round trip to Krypton to see if he is indeed the last son of that doomed planet, Lois Lane has moved on with her life. Lois Lane now has a five-year-old son and the father is no other than Richard White, played by James Marsden. When Superman returns Lois and Richard are engaged to be married."
God Almighty, one can only hope this isn't true. Singer says he wants to pick the movie up right after Superman 2. Well, so much for that, or a story that makes any sense.
Oh boy!!! Hopefully this is just an incorrect spoiler report.

It's Kate Bosworth.
Correct! My mistake. Not much better though.
i could easily reiterate some things you've said to me in response to the speculative nature of my criticisms of Episode III.
Hmm, somehow once again Star Wars gets brought up in a thread completely irrelevant to that subject. You could, but it would be a ridiculous and stupid comparison. Entirely different criticisms. But since this is Superman and nobody wants to wade through that useless, tired Star Wars muck here, I'll move on.
Let me clarify. Singer stated, unless I'm mistaken, that his film would pick up after Superman 2. So obviously Superman is older. Sorry, Routh is in no way going to look older and more mature to Chris Reeve is Superman 2. That's the first problem. Second problem! Superman specifically stated to the President he wouldn't let him down again. Uh, okay, but then you leave for 6 years. How is that going to make sense at all? Third problem. Jarel told Superman that Krypton was destroyed. If it was destroyed and is no longer there, why would you go there. It makes no sense.
Now, that might make for a great film, had Singer not stated it was going to have some continuity with the first two films, and it was going to pick up from there. Well, if this report is true, it contradicts major points the first two Superman films set up. I haven't followed Superman news much at all. But unless Singer changed his mind on following up the first two films, I don't like that report.:)
Unless you watch Australian soap operas, I don't think anyone has a right to judge Mr. Routh yet.
Well, I have seen him make guest appearances on TV shows. Not all that impressed. I'm not impressed with his look either. Either way, I don't believe he'll come close to measuring up with Reeve, but then that's a tall order for anyone. I just think there are far better choices out there, and not neccesarily Welling, who would be better? ;)
And if it is a continuation, why would they bother refilming something like the ship crash...
I'm asking the same question about a lot of things I've heard on the film. If it was a completely seperate film and not a continuation, I wouldn't have a problem. But he did say it was a continuation.

I enjoyed watching the blog reports from Singer on Bluetights.net. They must be going to have some significant scenes on the Kent farm by looking at everything they built. The barn, the house, they even grew corn for the corn fields. I think they might be retelling the origin from the looks of the set maybe Singer was using the continuation of Superman 2 as a Red Herring. I really want to see this movie but I have my doubts with the casting of Routh as Superman and Boswell as Lois. I hope that they surprise me with a really great movie. I just wish Singer was doing Superman and X-3. That ship just looks way too big btw.

As for someone else's comment regarding why Supes would go to where Krypton blew up, just because the planet exploded doesn't mean he was it's only survivor. In the first film Jor-El had a huge ammount of knowledge regarding Earth which would suggest some form of deep space exploration. Also, he was not the only Kryptonian scientist. It's not too far fetched an idea that some Kryptonians were exploring another planet when theirs blew up. Hence, there might be other survivors (or even their decendants).

Some casting news...
[quote] LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Parker Posey, who last appeared in "Blade: Trinity," is taking on another popular comic book franchise.
The 36-year-old actress has signed on to play one of the bad guys in the Bryan Singer-directed untitled Superman film according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Posey will portray Kitty Koslowski, the henchwoman to the evil genius Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey). Kal Penn of "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" fame will play Stanford, another wicked henchman.
On the side of truth, justice and the American way are: newcomer Brandon Routh as Superman, Kate Bosworth as Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, Hugh Laurie as the newspaper's editor-in-chief Perry White, James Marsden as Richard White, Sam Huntington as Jimmy Olsen and Eva Marie Saint as Superman's mom Martha Kent.
Posey's film credits include "The House of Yes," "Waiting for Guffman," "You've Got Mail," "Scream 3," "Best in Show," "A Mighty Wind" and "Laws of Attraction." She recently wrapped shooting the comedy "The OH in Ohio" opposite Danny DeVito, Paul Rudd and Mischa Barton.

I think the STORY picks up after Superman II would have, but it's not a direct SEQUEL of it. I know it's nitpicking but hopefully I can explain...
Singer stated, unless I'm mistaken, that his film would pick up after Superman 2. So obviously Superman is older. Sorry, Routh is in no way going to look older and more mature to Chris Reeve is Superman 2. That's the first problem.
I don't think ANYONE would *look* older than Christopher Reeve in Superman II. If you try to get someone who looks older, he'll probably be TOO old. Instead of trying to get someone who LOOKS older, Singer just probably got the actor he thought could play him. Hugh Jackman, if you remember, got some undeserved criticism of his bad resemblance to the comic book Wolverine. They said he was too tall and not muscular enough. Thankfully, his acting was spot on.
Like others, I'll reserve judgement on Routh after the movie comes out. He MAY be a bad actor but I'll wait on the judgement.
Second problem! Superman specifically stated to the President he wouldn't let him down again. Uh, okay, but then you leave for 6 years. How is that going to make sense at all?
Hell, if Vulcans can "lie," then Superman can lie too. Or maybe it's not a lie as much as it's not living up to his word. Anyway, Superman gives up being Superman for whatever reason. In a way, this actually goes along with Superman's desire to be "normal" in Superman III.
Third problem. Jarel told Superman that Krypton was destroyed. If it was destroyed and is no longer there, why would you go there. It makes no sense.
Well, I never heard before this thread that the reason he is AWOL for 6 years is because he went to Krypton. If that is the case, then that's kind of weird. We probably don't have enough information. Possibly there's something Superman finds out that Krypton still exists.
Like I said earlier, it's probably NOT a direct sequel to Superman II but if you had to put it in the timeline it would come after Superman II (to which Singer is probably saying that he doesn't consider Superman III-IV part of his canon).
But, I think our information here is pretty spotty and should just wait until we get all of the facts.

Again, just because the planet exploded doesn't mean he was it's only survivor. Sure it ruins the whole "Last Son Of Krypton" bit but it isn't too far fetched an idea that people from Krypton happened to be off-world when it blew up. Just look at Zod, Nod, and Ursa as three special cases. Maybe there are other exiles still running amuck or perhaps people living in another nearby planet that were fortunate enough to be far away from Krypton when it went kaboom.

Don't know if this has been posted before but there was an exclusive from the set of the farm scene on an Australian channel just then, and the crash site is supposed to be of a space vehicle from Supermans adult years, not from his childhood. Singer said that Superman goes away for a few years as an adult and the crash site is from him coming back. Just thought I'd mention that cause I hadn't seen it mentioned (Admittedly I haven't read all of this thread.)

That's a reason, but a very suspect one that doesn't hold any water as far as I'm concerned.
Maybe it's just me, and I'm not digging what I've heard so far. Then again, I think anyone is going to come up lame compared to Reeve. Since I don't want to rain on the parade, I'll quietly step out of the thread so it can get back on topic. The completed film will be the deciding factor. :)
