Currently, out of my collection of 250 films, 89 are on this list. There are about 40-45 more that I am planning to get either when they get better DVD treatment or when I can set aside the funds.
It's a suprisingly decent list, although about 50 of those films are schmaltzy feel-good entertainment masquerading as good cinema, and another 30 or so are only on there because they're recent and thus still fresh in people's minds.

I see that the special edition DVDs for the Leone movies brought them higher on the list. A few years ago, I remember that Good/Bad/Ugly was somewhere in the 50's and Once/West was around 80.

77 or so. Two things about this list, though:
1. I was surprised by how many good movies are out there I still "keep meaning to pick up."
2. I don't trust the IMDB Top 250 anymore. Something about the way they tally votes just doesn't add up in my book to a true top 250 list. I think it has to do with how many flicks from the last year get on it so quickly simply due to the number of votes. Finding Neverland is good, but not one of the best 250 films ever made. Even if you took every best picture nominee (also not an indicator of the best 250 films ever made), there's over 350 of them, and I'm not sure if it would be in the top 250.

I own the following movies & I'm counting dvd & vhs because I can't afford to replace all of my vhs. I wouldn't want to own a lot of those movies because they seem to be mostly dramas & I can watch a drama once or twice & admit that it's good. However I wouldn't want to rewatch them all of the time.
Star Wars (1977)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
The Matrix (1999)
Fight Club (1999)
Vertigo (1958)
Se7en (1995)
Some Like It Hot (1959)
L.A. Confidential (1997)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Fargo (1996)
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
The Princess Bride (1987)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Gladiator (2000)
The Terminator (1984)
Twelve Monkeys (1995)
Trainspotting (1996)
Forrest Gump (1994)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
The Insider (1999) (I really only own this because at the time I was obsessed with Russell Crowe & had to have all of his movies.)
I will be buying the following at some time in the future:
Back to the Future (1985)
Lost in Translation (2003)
American Beauty (1999)
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Garden State (2004)
The Last Picture Show (1971)
Groundhog Day (1993)
I used to own these but I had seen them enough & didn't think I'd end up watching them again so I sold them:
The Exorcist (1973)
Magnolia (1999)
I absolutely hated these movies:
Before Sunset
21 Grams (2003)
Yes I watched all of both of them. Before Sunset was so disappointing to me. I loved Before Sunrise, but I never thought that many people even liked it until I heard about everyone buying the 2 pack with both films when it was released.
I plan on renting the following:
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Manhattan (1979)
Sideways (2004)
I own from the bottom 100:
Crossroads (2002)
Soul Plane (2004)
I do like the following from the bottom 100 but I don't own them:
Glitter
Rollerball (2002)
Torque (2004)
IDrinkMolson
03-12-05, 05:44 PM
76 at least on the top, not including 3 or 4 not released yet that I plan on getting.

Superman IV
This is from a collection of under 500 titles (to put it into perspective, the guy with 183 has just over 1,000 titles). Not too shabby. I think the list is a good guide for anybody starting off a collection that they would like to see variation (but quality) in.

If I count "The Incredibles" and "Laura", which I'll be buying on Tuesday, I have 135 from the top 250.
All "best of" lists are different and slanted one way or another. My DVD buys tend to include more movies from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s than the average DVD buyer. I think that's why I have 135 from my 399 DVD collection on the IMDB list.

I own an even 50, or 20% of the list. The 50 comes out to about 17% of my collection. There's still a few off the list I want to get, and others I'll never get.

95, with three more being purchased in the next month (Incredibles, Sideways, Finding Neverland). I only own about 350 movies.
when you saw "only" 350...you say disparagingly. nothing to be ashamed of...it's a fine number!

4 from the Bottom100 (Robot Monster; Spice World; Barb Wire; Superman IV)
Strangely, Ed Wood made IMdb's Top100 list, but Plan 9 from Outer Space is missing from the Bottom100!
CORRECTION/UPDATE (as of 5/9/05):
221 from the Top100 (245 have been released in R1)

60 for me.
This list must change quite a bit or something, because based on the list I'm seeing, I find it extremely hard to believe the people who say they own none of the bottom hundred. Not saying you're lying or anything ;), just hard to believe.
I don't think it's hard to believe at all. I own 1 (Superman IV) and only because it came with the boxed set. Of the other 99, I don't think I've even watched any, let alone owned them.

I agree. I own close to 1,900 titles and of the bottom 100...I own only 2. Superman IV for the reason you mentioned, and the best bad film on the list.....Bride of the Monster. I love good bad films and have many in my library, but those films on the list just plain suck.

Scrolling down the list, I couldn't help but notice how many movies from the last year or two that are on that list already--the same goes for the bottom 100. It really says something about IMDB, as any movie that is deemed great as being a great movie will be bombarded by "10" votes, and any movie that is deemed horrible will rocket to the bottom 100.

Could you give some examples of some of these "really horrible" movies. Because as far as I can tell most of the films on the list got quite a bit of critical acclaim, even if it may be a stretch to call them one of the greatest movies of all time.
There certainly are too many modern movies on the list, but if it was completely mainstream I don't think we'd be seeing films like "The Seven Samurai" and "Fanny and Alexander" among the more "common" ranked movies.
Still, I'm of the opinion that movies like "Spirited Away" and "Spider-Man 2" deserve to be on the list. They aren't the most influential movies ever made, but I find them to be incredibly entertaining. It's better if you look at it as a list of a slightly more intelligent than mainstream opinion of the most entertaining great films.
Overall though it's kind of hard to categorize the list - for every "Snatch" there's a "Wild Strawberries."

You probably want to change your collection link. When I click on it, it goes to my collection (and if someone else does, it will go to their page if they are signed in). You have to add your username to the end of it. Check the bottom of the DVDAf for the entire collection link for the whole html address.

I wouldn't say that there are a lot of really horrible movies on the list, but there are plenty of mediocre ones that happen to have devoted geek followings (the type that vote in online polls on IMDB). These films include: Se7en, Leon, Reservoir Dogs, Braveheart, Kill Bill, The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, Shrek, Life of Brian, Gladiator, Magnolia, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Almost Famous, 21 Grams, Snatch, The Shawshank Redemption, etc. Most of these movies aren't bad, but they're hardly the pinnacle of cinema. I think of them more as stepping stones, "My First" sorts of pictures that people see in high school and that get them interested in film.
Then there are the WTF recent films like Hotel Rwanda, Sideways, Life Is Beautiful, Finding Neverland, American Beauty, etc., that won't even earn a footnote in cinema history except perhaps for their box office numbers.
Finally, there are the super-schmaltzy older films that have survived because of the populist attitudes they embrace, films such as It's a Wondeful Life, Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. I don't think of these as classics so much as just old movies.

Currently, out of my collection of 250 films, 89 are on this list. There are about 40-45 more that I am planning to get either when they get better DVD treatment or when I can set aside the funds.
Exactly. I own 89 as well, and several of those remaining are those on my "to buy" list.

Finally, there are the super-schmaltzy older films that have survived because of the populist attitudes they embrace, films such as It's a Wondeful Life, Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. I don't think of these as classics so much as just old movies.
I can agree with some of what you are saying, but all of those older films you mentioned are classics and if anything deserve to be higher on the list. I agree about some of the more recent films. I have seen many of them and have no interest in buying them on DVD. Most don't seem to me like they will hold up at all 10 years or more from now. Many of the recent Academy Awards Best Pictures like American Beauty had me shaking my head when I watched them. Good films yes, but really the best we had to offer for the entire year? The Academy really has a bad history of picking top films.

95 on DVD, maybe 20 others that are still on VHS. For instance, I don't have KING KONG because I'm waiting for the remastered SE. There are maybe 30 more that are on my want list (HIS GIRL FRIDAY, SUNSET BLVD, THE BIG SLEEP, etc.)

What 'gives' is that great is subjective. There are a few films on there that I absolutely detest, but evidently many others love.

I don't know, I think they're all quality films...at least in respect to cinema on the whole. Place any title from the top-250 alongside a title from the bottom-100 for confirmation of this. But like "natevines" said, it's all subjective. The titles are voted on by guys and gals like you and I. Most people are fans of Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. I wasn't too blown away by either. However, I can understand and accept their placement on the list because I'm well aware that I'm in the minority with my unfavorable impression of them.

By my count, close to 60% of the films on the list were made before 1980.

As for me… I have 100 out of 217, giving me an average of 46%, and I never consciously sought IMDB for advice as to what title to get, unlike some people I know.

out of 217 is the 46% that he mentioned
only 40% out of 250 (assuming he stopped counting at #217, because he didnt have any of the final 33)... cant really manipulate the percentages by stopping counting at the last one you have.. Otherwise, someone that only had the first one.. could say 100% ;)

Could you give some examples of some of these "really horrible" movies. Because as far as I can tell most of the films on the list got quite a bit of critical acclaim, even if it may be a stretch to call them one of the greatest movies of all time.
OK, maybe "really horrible" was overstating it a bit, but below is a list of movies from the IMDb top 250 that IMO range from terrible to mediocre:
<b>Memento
The Matrix
Requiem For a Dream
Kill Bill Vol 1
Kill Bill Vol 2
The Sixth Sense
Cinema Paradiso
Terminator 2
Run Lola Run
Return of the Jedi
Talk To Her
Lost in Translation
Being John Malkovich
21 Grams

Terrible to Mediocre? The Sixth Sense was a rare Hollywood "intelligent" suspense/horror film (though Unbreakable has more rewatch value IMO) T2 is a superb action blockbuster, Matrix is also a very good intelligent action film (much better than the sequels). :)
I agree I was also scratching my head at KB1 and 2 but even they were good fun. :)

The chart works better if you take it as a snapshot of movies people find entertaining in the here and now. I don't agree with some of the choices but resepct them ;)
As you said wendersfan its just your opinion which is OK :)

69 and I saw about 15-20 others that I will probably get at some point.

141 for me, with several more on the horizon. Also, another 20 or so that I WOULD buy if they were given higher-quality releases.
EDIT: Also, I'm happy to say I don't own a single one of the bottom 100.

217? do u mean out of 250?
Sorry, I meant 100 titles in my 217 strong collection are in the top 250 IMDB list. That's how one gets the average.

65. Some of them I'm waiting on Special Editions. Some of them are not out on DVD yet. Some of them I will never own. But 65, as of today.
I'm also proud to say I own only ONE in the Bottom 100 List -- Marci X.

I just checked the bottom 100 and I own one of them:
RoboCop 3
And that's only because it was part of the trilogy boxset. However, I don't think it was that bad that it deserves to be in the worst 100 films of all time. There are plenty that were far, far worse.

I've got 62 of the top 250, which represents 19% of my total collection.
Only 1 on the bottom 100 - Superman IV as part of the boxed set.
