I Have the Power! He-Man Comes to DVD This Summer/Fall

Just got this info from TVShowsonDVD.com

We just received the He-Man press release directly from our friends at BCI Eclipse. They have plans to release a 10 episode "best of" in July (just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con) followed by the first season in the fall of 2005. BCI has acquired the rights to the 1983-1990 series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (135 episodes) and the 1990-1991 The New Adventures of He-Man (65 episodes) as well as the He-Man/She-Ra Christmas Special.

We expect that the series will contain 4 sets (each season broken into two sets) since 65 episode seasons would carry a high price tag. We're told that specific information on the releases, including dates and extras, will be announced later this month.

Minneapolis, MN. - March 7, 2005 - Navarre Corporation (NASDAQ: NAVR) a leading publisher and distributor of a broad range of home entertainment and multimedia software products, today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, BCI Eclipse Company, LLC ("BCI"), has acquired certain exclusive distribution rights to Entertainment Rights' classic animation series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and The New Adventures of He-Man.

Under the terms of this agreement, BCI will exclusively promote and distribute both classic animated series on DVD throughout the U.S. and Canada. The first release will be a "10 Best Episode" 2 DVD set from the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series which is scheduled to be launched at retail in July 2005 in conjunction with the 2005 San Diego Comic-Con International convention. This release will be followed later in the fall of 2005 with the first of multiple DVD box sets of the complete series in "season" format, plus comprehensive and generous special features.

BCI has retained the services of two prominent consultants, Andy Mangels and Val Staples, for the release of these series and the production of the DVD added collectible features. Entertainment writer Andy Mangels is the best-selling novelist and author of Animation on DVD - the Ultimate Guide. Val Staples, is the owner of www.he-man.org, the internet's largest portal for the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe fan community, and owner of MVCreations graphic design company and publisher of the new Masters of the Universe comic. Both will supervise the sequencing and packaging of the original episodes, as well as the wide array of extra content and collectible inserts that will be added to the DVD releases.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a landmark in children's television history, being the first nationally syndicated television program based on a successful toy line. Originally produced from 1983-1985 by world renowned Filmation studios and syndicated until 1990, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe has experienced consistent popularity over the years, demonstrated by its two subsequent animated series which aired in 1990-1991 and 2002-2004 as well as its multi-year run as an exceptionally successful toy and merchandising line for Mattel.

Greg Glass, Sr. VP at BCI, stated, "BCI is thrilled with the opportunity to bring these classic animated series to DVD for the first time in North America. Our acquisitions team has been focused on this property for quite some time based on its 25+ year history of being one of the strongest and most collectible toy and animation properties ever produced. BCI intends to give each DVD release the historical treatment it deserves."

Glass continued, "With He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, we build on our reputation for bringing classic and collectible programming to DVD, but we expand that focus to an even larger and more valuable licensed property. We are excited about this new added focus towards truly frontline collectible releases."

Mike Heap, CEO, Entertainment Rights, added, "We are extremely pleased to be partnering with BCI, who are recognized for their expertise in the marketing and distribution of home entertainment properties. He-Man is the second significant agreement Entertainment Rights has concluded since acquiring the Filmation library and we look forward to a rewarding partnership with BCI on He-Man and Masters of the Universe."

Hmmm... perhaps I should start offering consulting services. I mean, no offense to Andy Mangels and his book, but I had the exact same thing online well before he put his together.

Still, great news for He-Man fans.

Sure! Actually, everyone can 'cause it's going to be democratic. I'm helping set up the poll for he-man.org -- there's going to be a short list of episodes, and users get to vote for their favorites from those.

"Origin of the Sorceress" is on the short list for season 2, by the way. I think they're doing some last minute fiddling with the episode lists, but I think the plan is to have everything up and running late tonight or sometime tomorrow.

Does this show still hold up today? If I recall the backgrounds looked very "Hanna-Barbera" if you know what I mean.

Although I'm extremely happy that He-Man is finally being released, I'm a little worried about audio and video quality since BCI isn't known for their quality DVD releases. Adam, are the episodes going to be remastered and/or restored or are they going to be straight ports from the original prints? I only hope that BCI treat He-Man the way Disney has treated their animated classics.

Slightly off-topic . . . went to the local comedy club this past weekend and one of the comics did a bit using the whole intro from He-Man. Imagine if drug companies decided to start using classic cartoon characters for their advertising. For this example we will be selling a Viagra-like drug to be called "Castle Greyskull." (Now, just put on your dirty-mindset . . .)

"He-Man! And the Masters of the Universe! I am Adam, prince of Eternia, and defender of the secrets of Castle Grayskull. [Pelvis Thrust] This is Cringer, my fearless friend. Fabulous secret powers were revealed to me, the day I held aloft my magic sword and said, By the Power of Grayskull! I Have The Power! Cringer became the mighty Battle Cat. And I became He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe!""

This is awesome news. I've been waiting for this news for what seems like a gazillion years. With the way Mattel royally screwed up the new toyline a few years back (which in turn doomed the new cartoon series, which was showing great promise), I was beginning to fear that we'd never ever see this.

Woo!

I don't remember them by title.

What about the new ones that were on Cartoon Network?

Awesome, awesome, awesome!!! Now if only we could get "Secret of the Sword" in R1 as well. Not sure if I'll plunge for the 10 Best set in July or hold out until the fall. Decisions, decisions.

The good thing about the "Best of" collection being released first is we'll be able to see the quality of the episodes being released for the season sets so we could make an educated decision. I hope this release comes proper.
