Thanks for posting the article. And kudos to show creators who won't back down on key music.

Take for example the first season's Christmas episode of "thirtysomething," during which they play Joni Mitchell's "River." It plays throughout the episode, and is absolutely critical to the goings-on in it. I would venture to say that -- as much as I want to see this show released on DVD -- I would not buy it if this episode was changed as far as music is concerned.

Wow great article. I think that is one of the reasons I've been hesitent to pick up Quantum Leap Season 2. I have Season 1 and the original Pilot episode DVD, and as a QL fan I feel obligated to get the entire series and will eventually.

Thanks for posting. I'd like to read an article that gives specifics as to what the original agreements are for the music usage in the show for normal broadcast and syndication. And then why a different agreement must be reached for a DVD release. And then further discussion as to how this is changing agreements going forward with newer tv shows - are they negotiating these upfront now.

Is anyone else sick and tired of them removing the music from your favorite shows??

I don't know about you guys but I am getting pretty sick and tired of the studios removing the music from some of my favorite tv shows on dvd, especially when some of the songs are key! This is getting pretty ridiculous and it's a VERY disturbing trend! For me it started with the show WISEGUY ... most of the music has been replaced, but there is a key scene where removed the song NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN from a VERY POWERFUL scene at the end of the first season and now the scene has totally lost it's punch! Now I just get The Greatest American Hero and I noticed that a couple key songs are missing from the pilot as well !! I haven't gotten thru the rest yet, but I am sure there is more missing!

I also read that they are probably going to have to change or remove much of the music on any future Miami Vice dvds as well. This really sucks!!! The studios need to get their shit together and start ponying up some of their profits on these dvd sales and getting the music rights! There have been several articles written about how the studios are making TONS of money on tv show's on dvd, a market that they never knew would sell. But ya know what, either they start securing the rights to the music or I am going to stop buying. Hell, pass the costs onto the consumer!! I would be willing to spend another $5 or $10 per box set to get the music intact! Do it right or don't do it at all, that's all I'm saying ....

Damn I'm pissed!!!
