Born on the 4th of July best Oliver Stone film?
I think it is better than Platoon.
This is the one movie where Tom Cruise gave an truly great Oscar worthy performance.
Maybe some people would disagree with the liberal anti-war message but it is not sentimental like most movies dealing with handicapped or individuals with physical limitations.
Agree or disagree?
What do you remember most about the movie?

It's my 2nd favorite film of his behind Platoon. There are many things I love about this movie besides Cruises' noteworthy performance.
-Foreshadowing on war's devastating effects when young Ron sees WWII wounded veterans during the 4th of July parade.
-The transition of Ron's last dance at his prom to the slaughtered Vietnamese villagers in just a matter of minutes.
-A powerful John Williams score.
-Chilling sequence with Ron visiting the family of a marine who's life he was held responsible for.
I can name about 6 of those guys that Cruise runs with in the snow during wrestling practice because they were picked from one of my old high schools.

It's one of my favorite Stone films. The opening montage was great, capturing the Americana of the 1950s before the Vietnam War and the youthful optimism of country and Ron Kovic. The parade scene makes for a wonderful compare and contrast between what an inspired Kovic sees as a young boy as opposed the one years later when becomes one of the veterans. Another great scene was Kovic's homecoming, where both of his parents are devastated, realizing their son is no longer the man he once was.
As mentioned above, John Williams' score was a great, very moving at times. The solo trumpet signifying the struggle of the common man facing great odds (as opposed to the larger than life Korngold-esque fanfares used for Superman, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, etc. for heroes that defy the odds and win at the end of the day).
I haven't seen much talk (or reviews) on the recently re-issued DVD.

For my money, it's Wall Street (no pun intended...unless you think it's really funny, in that case, it was intended).
Magnolia.
That hurt my eyes. Punctuation is everybody's best friend.

My favorite? Hard to say - Platoon,Born On The Fourth Of July and JFK are great, with Wall Street and The Doors just a notch below.
* Notice I can't even bring myself to name that travesty of filmmaking. Hopefully in time we'll all forget that misguided effort.

My vote goes to JFK - insane history but brilliant cinema... followed by Natural Born Killers.
Wall Street is way overrated. To see a film that actually understands economics and business, see Other People's Money instead.

I don't want to learn economics and business when watching a movie. If that were my goal, I'd go to class once in a while. I watch movies to be entertained. Wall Street is entertaining (to the masses, at least...hence it's "overratedness").
Edit: Heh, I just read my post again and I came off as a bit of an asshole. Unintended.

As to the topic at hand, Platoon is still my favorite Stone film. Fourth of July just didn't resonate with me very much.

My favorite is JFK, but Born on the Fourth of July is still a very good choice. To watch the evolution of Ron Kovic from a young, idealistic kid to a disillusioned veteran is fascinating, and Oliver Stone tells the story very well.
