"Au Hasard Balthazar" Any Plans for R1 Release?

I've wanted to see this for a while but missed the last US theatrical run. It's out on R2 dvd but are there plans for a R1 anytime?

I hope so. It seems inevitable but I haven't heard anything. I've been toying with the idea of getting the R2 but the cost has been holding me back.

I've read rumors (on this forum, I think) that Criterion has plans of doing "Balthazar" and "Mouchette" (maybe "Pickpocket", as well?), but of course nothing official has been announced. Presumably someone knows about the distribution rights, and if Criterion's got 'em, then certainly we'll see these films from them... you know, being masterpieces and all.

But I couldn't wait for "Balthazar", and ordered the R2/PAL UK release. I'm very pleased with the quality of the transfer, but I still hope to upgrade to a fully-loaded Criterion edition eventually!

You are correct...those are only rumors....The R2 presentation(s) are excellent.

Does the R2 release have english sub-titles? If so, what would be the best place to order it?

I have been dying to get my hands on a good sub-titled version of this movie for about 20 years now.

They do have subs (these are UK releases), and while I don't necessarily know the best place to order them, I got mine from amazon.uk. I usually try to order a few titles at a time to cut down on shipping, though it's not as onerous as German or Japanese shipping charges.

Also, and this is probably simply a hardware issue for me, but "Balthazar" is one of those PAL titles that my Toshiba 4900 misreads in Auto-mode and deinterlaces incorrectly as "VIDEO". I have to force-select "FILM" mode for it to correctly deinterlace ("deinterlace" is the correct term I think?). Anyway, if you see a bunch of jaggies, you'll know what to do! And the transfer is really very nice on "Balthazar".

Criterion is releasing Pickpocket this year. Paul Schrader has recorded a commentary and the documentary 'The Models of Pickpocket' is supposed to be included.

My Dream

Criterion will release all Bresson's films(that they have the rights to) in a box set...with the special features including his two early films

From the horse's mouth:

Jon:

Any word on when me might see a Criterion DVD of Robert Bresson’s Au Hasard Balthazar? I think many of us are tempted to order the UK release from Nouveaux, but would prefer to wait on the Criterion if one is forthcoming.

Thanks.
Dear Brian,

We hope to release BALTHAZAR in the future, but nothing is definite at the moment.

Best,
JM

Ah, one of the famous Mulvany stock responses. I have no doubt we'll see it eventually from Criterion I was just hoping for more concrete news.

Yes, "Jon Mulvaney" in the past year has been about as forthcoming as a White House Press Secretary. "JM" rarely tips his hand anymore.

That's true but at the moment I find it very expensive to buy DVD's from the UK. I'm on the fence but I keep hoping to here an announcement for R1 release.
