Best South Park DVD Season set?
For me, the 5th Season has some of the best episodes. Of course, I love Season One and damn, all the seasons are really great - but this particular season has it all. A few examples:
Scott Tenorman Must Die (7-11-01)—Cartman is on a quest for revenge after an older kid tricks him into buying his pubic hair for $10. And boy, does he get revenge. This episode is frequently cited as a fan favorite.
Terrance and Phillip: Behind the Blow (7-18-01)—Terrance and Philip have broken up under sordid circumstances, and the boys try their damnedest to bring the duo back together in time for Earth Day celebrations.
Cartmanland (7-25-01)—Cartman inherits $1 million and buys his own theme park so that he can bar everyone—especially Stan and Kyle—from attending.
Proper Condom Use (8-1-01)—This episode begins with a disgusting trick involving a dog, which leads the South Park parents to insist that sex education begin in kindergarten.
Towelie (8-8-01)—Here's a wildly silly episode that introduces a new character: a talking towel that only wants to get high.
Osama Bin Laden Has Farty Pants (11-7-01)—The boys receive a goat from American-bombed Afghani kids, but they end up returning it to Afghanistan and confronting Osama himself. Some pretty good commentary on US policy here, surprisingly.
Butters’ Very Own Episode (12-12-01)—Butters' family implodes when the secret gay life of his father is uncovered.

I'd rank the seasons like this:
5
3
4
2
1
So yeah, I basically agree that it gets better as it goes along, with that one exception. Season 1 I'm not huge on, at least compared to the later seasons.

I went with 5. Production quality started to peek about then. There are great episodes in all the seasons, but 5 just seems like every episode is a true winner. Isn't 5 when Mr. Garrison creates his transport thing and Scott Tenorman is probably one of the best episodes they have done.

I vote for 3, just because it's the only one that has every episode dubbed in Spanish and French! Vaya a mi casa....

Purely from a DVD standpoint, I will have to go with Season 1. I really wish Trey and Matt would do commentaries through the whole episode for the rest of the seasons. They only did that on number one. I know they say it gets boring and dumb, but not when they do the commentary. There are so many aspects to certain episodes that they could comment on, but they don't because they don't stick through the whole episode. As far as quality of shows go, there are classics in every season, it would be tough to choose. Also, a honorable mention for the Season 2(?) Intros with Bakin' Bacon with Macon. Hilarious.
P.S. I know the commentaries for S1 weren't on the DVD's, but I count the CD releases as part of the release.... And they were recorded FOR the DVD release

Episode-wise: Season 5
DVD-wise:
If the first season commentaries were actually on the DVD's, i'd go with 1.
Season 2 would probably pull ahead with the "Goin Down To South Park" documentary... but no commentaries. So it'd be hard to say.

Actually, Trey and Matt might pretend they don't like doing commentaries, but its really Comedy Central and its parent company being afraid of what they might say. Thats why the first runs of Season 1 and 2 had no commentaries and you had to mail the Proof of Purchase in to buy a CD with em on it.

I'd have to say my favorite season would be 5 out of the sets released so far. Honestly seasons 1 and 2 don't hold up that well for me anymore. Sure when it first came out it was funny but now whenever I catch a episode from either of those seasons I don't laugh as much if not at all. That's the main reason I haven't purchased either yet. At the moment I only own 3 and 5. I plan on getting 4 soon, and the first 2 eventually to complete the set.
