DVD's with noticable Edge Enhancement

I can't say I've ever noticed Edge Enhancement. But that was before I got a larger TV. A 46" Samsung DLP. I noticed Edge Enhancement right away on A Bug's Life CE DVD. This was the anamorphic edition too. The ant's had little hallows around their heads. Should I be seeing EE on this DVD? Reviews I've read say it's a stunning digital transfer. Is there possbily some calibration needed on my DVD or TV to reduce the visibility of EE? What other movies have noticable EE? I saw the post about Tombstone Vista Series.

That wasn't EE. It was the force.

What exactly is Edge Enhancement? I know what it looks like but why does it occur?

Usually the dweeb that's doing the encoding wants a nice, "sharp" look and cranks up the sharpening when doing the encoding.

Make sure your sharpness setting on the TV isn't set too high. It varies from TV to TV of course, but on most TV's the "proper" setting is very low, and having it too high can create extraneous lines and such. You might want one of the calibration DVD's they sell (Avia and Digital Video Essentials are the main ones I believe) to make sure.

The Tombstone DVD is the absolute worst at this. TPM is also not good in terms of EE.

A Bug's Life should not have edge halos. If you're seeing them, make sure you calibrate your TV with Avia or Digital Video Essentials. Your sharpness setting may be too high.

As mentioned above, Tombstone (Vista Series) and The Phantom Menace are two of the very worst DVDs for edge enhancement. I also nominate the anime Akira.

Gosford Park - and its application of "DarbeeVision" is insanely touted as an improvement to the image.

Take a look at some of their samples: http://darbeevision.com/print/print_g.php
Tell me - why would anyone think the enhanced images are better?

They do that all the time. And people say the dumbing down of DVD for J6P is no big deal. Tsk, tsk...

I reduced my sharpness and turned off all pictures enhancement settings in the DVD player itself.

Today I viewed Tombstone and TPM. I could definitely see EE big time. However I'm detecting halos in A Bug's Life as well. In case anyone here wants a reference point in Bug's Life, I can easily see halos around Dot's head at the point where Flik is giving her the speech about pretending the rock is a seed and will become a tree someday. Sorry, don't have the exactly time point handy (Maybe 10 minutes into the movie). Can anyone else detect EE in this movie?

What could be causing this? Maybe a better DVD player connected via HDMI would solve the problem?

You need to turn off SVM. How you do this will vary depending on your TV.

OK, I have a Samsung DLP so SVM doesn't apply. Thanks though.

Spiderman 2 SE has some wicked edge enhancement on the title sequence. It's clearly noticable (at least to me). The Superbit has considerably less.

Your DLP set will have to scale the incoming DVD signal to the native resolution of the display. Samsung probably put a cheap scaling chip in there that is adding edge ringing.

I checked A Bug's Life at the scene you cite (it's about 7 minutes into the movie), and didn't see any e.e.

Well I hope to pick up an upscaling DVD player soon and connect it via HDMI. I'll output the signal in 720p which in the DLP's native format. That way the TV won't have to scale or anything. I'll be back if it still shows evidence of EE.

It still doesn't sound like you are using Avia or DVE to adjust your TV properly. I'd certainly invest in that before I'd run out to buy a new HDMI player. You'd be amazed at the difference it makes vs. randomly adjusting your settings.

Agreed. I'm really bad at spotting edge enhancement, but that DVD made it obvious. And that was Fox's second crack at the title.
