John Carpenter's The Thing: both versions anamorphic?

hi, i recently bought the new version of The Thing dvd since it had an all new anamorphic remastered picture. i've always heard that the original dvd was not anamorphic but recently discovered that on the original dvd (printed on the disc) it says anamorphic. so the new version is pretty much the exact same thing? anyone care to shed some insight on this?

My copy of the old disc doesn't say "anamorphic" on it (only 2.35:1 widescreen), but, either way, the old version was not anamorphic.

There was a very interesting thread here (I thought so anyway) that compares the two DVD versions- http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...=carpenter%27s

The color, tint, and contrast look more natural on the SE. However, do we know if this disc's transfer was supervised accordingly?

If I remember correctly the first release said it was anamorphic on the packaging but was in error.

I have the original release and it is definitely not anamorphic.

I just checked my 1998 release of THE THING (which I've kept due to the isolated music score) and neither the packaging nor the disc itself features the term "anamorphic", so I'm not sure where everyone's confusion is coming from...

Well I checked my copy and it sure does say Anamorphic right on the disc, but sadly the disc is not.

It's an error.....on the second release, or pressing, or whatever. The first disc I bought, which was over 5 years ago, says on the disc itself....widescreen. The JC collection box edition, which includes 3 other films....says anamorphic on the disc. Like djtoell said, no matter which one you want to look at, it's NOT anamorphic. Thanks to the triple-dip I had to take, now I have the anny.

So really, there are 3 versions.

so I'm not sure where everyone's confusion is coming from.
Now you know.

Ah......well, buy the new version and the old version (if you don't already have it), keep the old case and the new disc and then take the other hybrid to the pawn shop. That, or make your own custom cover?
In any case I doubt we'll see this released again until it's in an HD format.

Which has been tentatively announced for the end of this year.

I have the original version (paid way too much for it, back when Universal discs were so expensive ) and am passing up on the current release. My old one is good enough until the HD one comes out.
