King Solomon's Mines (1950) -- good blind buy?

You decied for me! I enjoy adventure movies, and this one (from what I have read) is a classic. Reviews are one thing, but I put more stock in what my fellow DVD talkers have to say... what do ya think?

The movie is one of my favorites. Great, charismatic performances by Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr. Beautiful shot-on-location exotic African scenery. Belivable set up for these two to go trekking into the unknown and hazardous jungle.

That being said(only from reviews I've read of the DVD) the picture quality reportedly isn't the greatest. Some of the on-location scenes were shot with early one-strip color film, and have apparently never looked that great. The rest has a pretty soft and somewhat mis-registered image. There is a thread on the Home Theater Forum discussing this (which I can't find right now).

I've watched this movie on TV many times and enjoyed it immensely. Whether the quality of the current DVD is bad enough to diminish the viewing experience, I can't say. For me, it would have to be pretty bad.

Again, I recommend the movie very highly. I haven't seen the DVD but have heard reports that the PQ is lacking.
