Ya I know before anybody even mentions it, yes The Hustler was better, and is a great film, but thats not what we are talking about here :)

I really enjoyed this movie. Missed it when it was at the theaters (I was way too young) but discovered it years ago skipping classes at college to watch movies in the movie room.

I really liked it, while the movie isn't perfect by any means, I enjoyed the performances from everybody.

I really liked how they were all playing eachother throughout the movie, all the way to the end, at least thats what I got from it. Did Vincent really "just miss" the shot by a hair....never know.

And Vincent's cockiness towards Grady was great "Up your ass with the spot"

Ok I am rambeling

Thoughts on this movie

 He took a dive and pretty much told Eddie that when he gave him the $4000.

One of my favorite Tom Cruise films. I keep hoping for a better dvd release. Excellent score, too.

Solid movie that I've seen several times. Not one of Scorsese's best, but good nonetheless.

You're right, it is no Hustler, but much to it's credit, other than Fast Eddie, pool, and some homages to the original, it really didn't try to be. The Fast Eddie/Minnesota Fats match from Hustler is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time. The intensity of the performances by Jackie Gleason, Paul Newman, and George C. Scott were remarkable. OTOH, Color was more of a rollicking ride, and that was enjoyable in it's way.

weird, i also first caught (and enjoyed) Color of Money when i missed a day of classes in college (not ditching, more of the food poisoning variety).

also check out Poolhall Junkies for all you poolhall movie junkies. it ain't Hustler or Color of Money, but anything with Christopher Walken, Chazz Palminteri, Rod Steiger, Silver Spoon, Lex Luthor, and Sidekick all together is worth checking out.

It's probably a standard issue trivia question, but has anyone ever had a longer span between playing the same character in movies than Newman as Eddie Felson in The Hustler (1961) and The Color of Money (1986)? I can think for example of James Cagney as George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) and The Seven Little Foys (1955) but that's only 13 years. Am I missing any obvious ones? (probably :D)

I like it probably more than I should. It's one of my favorite Scorsese movies, and I think the editing is fantastic.

i like it. i wish scorsese would work with richard price more often. "life lessons" from "new york stories" is one of my favorite shorts.

 He took a dive and pretty much told Eddie that when he gave him the $4000.

But did he really? Or did he just say that because he really did miss it, and didn't want to look bad in front of Eddie.

I don't know I guess I look at it a different way thanb others do, maybe I am reading into it too much, maybe its just me though.

I like to think that there are other things to it, rather than what the movie is just feeding me, they want you to think he missed the shot on purpose, but what if he really didn't what if he screwed up, missed it and lost because he was too cooky or whatever. Then say to Eddie that he missed it on purpose to make Eddie feel like crap.

Who knows though, maybe I am missing something, LOL :)

Then why bet against himself?

I dont think so just because of the way he seemed to think Eddie would be proud of him, like he finally "got it" and went for the money over the glory. The problem being this is the one place Eddie would never throw a game. So Vincent still doesnt get it.

Al Pacino has Cagney beat -- he played Michael Corleone in 1974 (Godfather Part II) and 1990 (Godfather Part III), but that's only 16 years -- less than Newman's 25. For that matter, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, and a bunch of other people who were in the Godfather movies also qualify.

Ian McDiarmid also waited 16 years (between 1983's Return of the Jedi and 1999's The Phantom Menace) before reprising his role as Palpatine. Frank Oz, Kenny Baker, and Anthony Daniels also come in at the 16 year mark, depending on how you want to define playing a character.

I saw this when I was very young and probably missed a lot of what it meant. I was wondering if Newman's character is ever called Eddie or if it is merely inferred with the "I'm back" line at the end.

It's a great film . . . one that I haven't watched nearly enough.

Other plusses:
- Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio
- I believe this film was my first introduction to Forest Whitaker. he did a great job in such a small part and I've been a fan ever since.

I guess by the time the Star Wars films are finished, it will have been 28 years for Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels in their roles (1977 ep. 4 through 2005 ep. 3). (I also see Peter Mayhew and James Earl Jones in the cast for ep. 3). Interesting in that none of these four performers has their (real) face featured at any time in these roles!

I also thought of Ralph Bellamy playing FDR in Sunrise at Campobello (1960) and War and Remberance (1988) (28 years) although W&R was a TV production (a huge one too, I think the budget was over $100 million).

Eddie Constantine had 26 years between playing Lemmy Caution in Alphaville (1965) and Germany Year 90 Nine Zero (1991).

I love the soundtrack used in the film. Every song (no matter how longs it's played or whatever) has some sort of significance - at least to me.

And Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is hawt in it.

Not Newman's, Scorsese's, or Cruise's best, but definitely watchable and enjoyable.

I didn't care for this movie upon release but I think I was too young to appreciate it. It's grown on me over the years, and I like it if only for the fact it gave Newman an Oscar long overdue.
