"WoW" and "What TF.." ?

The stuff on the first release not on the second are a lot of the extras and the fact that the movie is the DIRECTORS CUT makes it different. Music pieces were in different places.

this seems like more Movie Talk material.

Cool flick! Still debating on whether to spend the $$ on the DC.

The DC is a bit different and does help in the whole story telling. I'd say it's worth it to upgrade as it does feel a bit more complete.

I've never seen the movie - is it wrong to see the DC before I see the original version? What's the recommended experience?

Thanks,

SEE THE ORIGINAL FIRST. I watched the DC recently and, to put it bluntly, hated it. The ambiguity of the theatrical version was the reason why I loved it in the first place, and it all seems stripped away in the DC. I also preferred the music in the original, and felt the additional scenes in the DC didn't add anything to the movie as a whole.

I recommend watching the original first, and if you're like me you'll probably watch the DC second out of curiosity!

Buy the original and rent the DC for the commentary.

Read the DVDTalk review. I'll be picking up the new version this week , but still hanging on to the original. The review indicates that the DC explains some of the movie's riddles more clearly, as well as including a couple of must-have extra features for fans. I think Best Buy has it for $15.99.

when i heard the DC changed the opening Echo song, i knew i want no part of it. that Echo song hooked me right in the first time i watched it. and i never cared for any of the deleted scenes, so if those are put back in, i think the movie would be worse. especially if they reinserted the Frank scenes, he yapped so much in those deleted scenes it killed the mysteriousness, he was just a rabbit who wouldnt shut up.

Watch the original first. That said, the DC is not a director's cut in the usual "this is the definitive version that the director would have wanted to release in the first place". Richard Kelly went to great pains to explain that this DC was only his own personal interpretation of the movie, so whatever interpretation you came up with after watching the original isn't necessarily "wrong". Or maybe he just said that not to piss off the fanboys.

I actually much prefer the original version. It just seemed like the original offered the viewer more of a chance to make up their own mind about the film. The DC uses much more exposition and really becomes pretty dogmatic as to the purpose of the supernatural forces in the film.

I bought the Director's Cut DVD and watched it that night (the fifteenth; the day it came out). I liked it, but I prefer the theatrical cut. It's definitely worth double dipping. Of course, I could be a little bias, due to the fact that Donnie Darko is my favourite film..

for those who haven't bought it just yet,

www.cd-wow.us has the R2 version for $12.95 USD shipped. The packaging is MUCH nicer than the R1 version, and includes a DTS track.

So, if you can play all regions (and PAL), the R2 is the way to go.
