Universal Pictures is planning a December 23 launch for Steven Spielberg's film about the 1972 Munich Olympics says Reuters.
The untitled project, a co-production between Universal and DreamWorks, had been set to go before the cameras last year. Preproduction had begun in Europe and casting was under way when Spielberg decided to have "Angels in America" playwright Tony Kushner do a rewrite on the project.
With the project postponed, Spielberg moved quickly to begin filming his adaptation of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds." Spielberg now plans to begin filming the Munich project in the summer.

This doesn't mean he did all the work on both movies all over the course of one year; it just means two movies are scheduled for release in the same calendar year. Besides, this is hardly new for Spielberg.

Seems like he wants to make his movies in pairs; one for summer blockbuster audiences, and one for Oscar consideration.
I still wonder how in the world he will get this thing done in less than a year.

I personally didn't care much for Schindler's List it was praised so much because of its content. And Saving Private Ryan was decent but there are better war movies. In my opinion Jaws is Spielberg's greatest film and he hasn't made a film of its equal yet.

The Terminal? (I'm going to get shit for that one, but I don't care).
As long as he doesn't throw us shit like Amistad, The Lost World, Hook, Always, and 1941; I welcome anything Spielberg does with welcome arms.

Well, I had heard he was a fast worker on Catch Me If You Can and with putting War of the Worlds together. But this seems almost crazy! Aren't they still shooting War od the Worlds. Oh well. I have faith. But it looks like he's working as fast as Clint Eastwood supposedly does.

That's your opinion, but you are in the minority. And there have been a lot of movies about the Holocaust that have not been praised the way "Schindler's List" has been, so obviously it takes more than just content.

Creating films in this quick a fashion really makes me think that many sacrifices will be made due to time restraints. I read in EW that War of The Worlds post is gonna be three months. I dunno how they can get something that effect intensive done in that little time..

does the film deal with the mossad's tracking down and killing of those involved in the planning of the attack? if it does, then vengeance would be a good title. i believe there was a book printed in the 80s or 90s titled in a similar fashion that dealt with this issue.

Good question. I had been assuming it's just about the hostage situation. One Day in September was already such an excellent film on the subject but since the majority of people have no interest in documentaries I can see it being plundered for a film.

Well, he's done it before. He shot Jurassic Park through November of 1992 and had that ready for June 93. He then shot Schindler's List during post production on JP, which was also a rather effects heavy film, from March til May 1993, and had that ready for a December release.
So it's not impossible, he's done it before, and he's gotten excellent results from it despite the hectic schedule. Granted, this isn't the exact same schedule, but I'm guessing Stevie knows what he's doing.

IMO Spielberg has greatly improved as a filmmaker since Schindler's List. As good as that movie was, it still relied on some of his old gimmicks at times. Whereas his most recent work is some of his best from a technical standpoint, even if the material itself isn't always as good as his old classics.

Technically, this is a remake, since one of the main sources for the Spielberg film (a book entitled Vengeance) was the basis of a powerful HBO movie (1986) SWORD OF GIDEON. It starred Steven Bauer, Rod Steiger, Michael York and Colleen Dewhurst. Unfortunately it hasn't been released here on DVD yet, but is out (quite cheaply) in the U.K.
The story is quite powerful, and indeed is about vengeance.
