OK, I usually hate threads where someone asks about a movie title using obscure and almost meaningless clues, but my wife has been bugging me about this movie she remembers loving when she was young.
She says the movie is from the 40's or 50's. It is set Italy about an Italian (female) teacher and an American man (possibly a soldier). It features the song "Volare". It seems to be a romance.
That's it. She can't give me anything else. I throw myself upon the mercy of DVDTalk.

Spring Wind (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053411/combined) (1959)? on imdb.com, it's the oldest film that has this song on its soundtrack.

She swears that is not the same movie after reading the description. My wife insists that the female romantic lead is Italian. Also she thinks (maybe) the title refers to "birds" in some way.

I hate to bump my own post but my wife made me promise to give it one more shot.

(aka: Lovers Must Learn) 1962Hot Damn! That MUST be it. I checked the soundtrack and Volare is there! As soon as she gets home I'll ask her but I'm sure you found it.
Thank you, this should get me some tonight (and I'll dedicate it to you, Bill)

If she really remembers this fondly and you really want to rev her motor, play this for her:
Al Di La (http://www.meredy.com/troydonahue/al_di_la.rm)
It's the big hit make-out song from the movie. My compliments! ;)

Hmm... where have I seen that cover before?

By the way, if you haven't seen Roman Holiday, it is a very good older film and the DVD is $7.78 from DDD. Of course, it's not the movie she wanted...

The first movie that popped into my mind was the Nicolas Cage/Penelope Cuz movie.

I know, it's like they didn't even try. Well, OK, they're driving a different direction.

More importantly, did you get any? Did you dedicate it to Bill?

Yes it was the right movie (Thanks!), yes I did get some, and yes Bill's name was cried out in passion (by her or me, I can't remember).
Now the problem is... how do I get it for her to see? The VHS tape is long OOP and it's not available on DVD. I tried BBV and Hollywood buy both have cleaned out any older obscure videos long ago.
