"The Big Red One - The Reconstruction" 2-disc SE announced for R1!

From DVDAnswers

Title: The Big Red One
Starring: Lee Marvin
Released: 3rd May 2005
SRP: $26.99

Further Details
Warner has officially announced a two-disc special edition of The Big Red One which stars Lee Marvin. "The real glory of war," Samuel Fuller said, "is surviving." A decorated combatant with the famed U.S. First Infantry in WWII, Fuller survived. His 1980 film version of his war experiences did not until now. Working with 70,000 feet of vault materials and Fuller's shooting script, critic/filmmaker Richard Schickel heads a reconstruction that adds over 40 minutes and transforms a truncated but admired war film into an epic masterwork. Lee Marvin, in a richly layered performance now revealed as one of his finest, stars as the sergeant of peach-fuzzed riflemen fighting from North Africa to Normandy and across Europe. The film is the squad's combat diary, war as it's fought and sweated and bled, and, maybe, survived. As well as a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and English Dolby Digital 5.1 track, the disc will include an audio commentary, documentaries, additional scenes, a photo gallery and a TV spot. Artwork is attached:

Kind of Criterion looking, isn't it?

"How do you say 'push' in French?"

I just watched this movie 2 weeks ago when it played in Austin. It is awesome, to say the least! I never saw the original, chopped up version, but this version was very well done and quickly became one of my favorite WWII movies. Can't wait for the dvd.

Who's doing the audio commentary? Was it recorded before Fuller's death, or is it some film scholar/critic?

It just keeps getting harder to stay on a budget. Another WB must buy.

That would be writer, historian, and Time magazine film reviewer, Richard Schickel, who oversaw and was the producer for the restoration. He has also done DVD commentaries for:

Warner's The Chaplin Collection
The Mark of Zorro (Fox)
Unforgiven (Warner)
Once Upon a Time in America (Warner)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (MGM/UA)
La Dolce vita (Koch Lorber)
The Hustler (Fox)
On the Waterfront (Columbia TriStar)
Gentleman's Agreement (Fox)
Leave Her to Heaven (Fox)

Personally, his delivery is a little dry for my tastes.

I used to have this movie on VHS, and quite frankly, I don't remember much about it except for a few scenes. One being the Morocco beach head against the Vichy French, a Kasserine Pass scene, the insane assylum, and the child birth scene in the German tank.

If you love WWII movies, then you should really love this one. It follows the Big Red One unit as they go to each of the major conflicts that they were in. Sam Fuller fought in the Big Red One and he wanted to make a realistic WWII movie. Kind of like Saving Private Ryan, but not quite as graphic. I believe a quote of Sam Fuller's about the movie went something like this (and I am paraphrasing): "I put everything in my movie like it happened, except when people got killed. No one would watch the movie if I showed when really happened when someone is blown up." That's a really bad job of me paraphrasing, but you get the gist of it.

I've been waiting for this ever since it was screened at this past year's NY Film Festival - looks like another great job from WB.

Damn them, here I bought the movie and now only four years later I'm forced to double dip. Actually always liked this movie and am looking forward to the extended cut. Would buy the new one even if I had just bought the old one.
