View Full Version : Friends Season One (15 Episodes) -- $4.99@CC (YMMV)

Circuit City's flyer lists Friends: Season One for $4.99 starting today. Text claims "15 Episodes", so it looks like the full, 4 disc set. May be an error, YMMV ! Still at $34.99 on their website..

It says that it is only 5 episodes, not 15. Look at page 3 of the online ad. It is the cheap friends dvd that they sell for 5.50 at walmart.

sanjoelo

My bad---it's "The Best of Season One". Text in the ad is misleading, it says "Season One", and the covers are similar. Closer inspection reveals that it's "The Best of..".

Still not a terrible deal for 15 episodes if you're a fan, but nearly as hot as it would have been. My apologies.

The print ad says "15 episodes" quite clearly. However, the entire 1st Season is 24 episodes.

Well I'll be damned. I really didn't think this would pan out for anyone. I guess it wasn't a total waste of text, then.

Pretty amusing, actually!

I tried to pricematch this at several places but no dice. Target said they didn't pricematch, FYE said they didn't price match, 2 Walmarts didnt have any of these in stock, Circuit City didn't have any in stock and then there's Best Buy.

I have Goodfellas, Top Gun, and Friends in my hand. I take them to the register and ask the guy could I pricematch. Another employee (apparently a manager) walked by about this time so the cashier asked him. Without even blinking he said no. He was really hateful about it to. He hadn't even looked at what I had or my ad. The cashier tried to show him what I had and the ad and the whole time he was saying no. He give me a really shitty look like I was robbing him blind. He then stormed off. The cashier looked at me and said I am soory about that but he is my boss. I told him not to worry about it and it wasn't his fault.

Needless to say, I am pissed off. I am not mad about not getting the pricematch, I am mad about how I was treated. I am thinking about sending them an email and reportuing this guy. I have spent alot of money in there and to be treated like this is ridiculous. To be treated like this as a new customer would be ridiculous also. Well enough of my venting. Congratulations to all those who got in on it.

Actually, it sounds like he actually achieved total rectal emulation.

Best Buy does have a Best Price Guarantee--it's posted all over their store. Had this been a more legit, less arguable price match, I would have asked for a phone to call their corporate hq.

As it stands, though, this deal was hardly the one to argue. You wouldn't really have a leg to stand on. Those who got in appear to have done so before the flags went up. Congrats to those people, though !

Hmm--the Invisible Mod appears to have edited my title. That's odd. I didn't put that (YMMV) in there, and I could have sworn I changed it to "Best of".

Then again, maybe I have some serious dain bramage.

Don't think so, though..

I can understand not wanting to pricematch Friends, but he said no to Goodfellas and Top Gun, without even seeing them. He just dismissed me. If I hadn't been in such a hurry I would have made a big ass scene but I let it go. The cashier wanted to give it to me. I could tell it. He had even pulled out the pricematch form book. He was very apologetic and looked kinda embarassed about it, and he did nothing wrong. I think I may have to puruse this further. The more I think about it, the madder I get.

I didn't try at Best Buy or Circuit City, because it's too big of a difference. Best Buy barely price matched The Good, The Bad and The Ugly for $7.50 from Target. I think Best Buy has the right to refuse, as stated in their price match policy. Congratulations to those who purchased it.

Since we're ranting--does anyone else hate the fact that a "Best of Season x" box set even exists for any series? I mean, c'mon--do the complete season(s), or don't do it at all. Totally lame.

You better be careful and make sure that the AOL deal doesnt require you to have at least 3 months of service or something along that lines. Im surprised they give you dvds immediately and make it so easy to cancel.

As far as the conversation goes about a rude manager, not even willing to look at your pricematches, I'd report him to the local store of higher branch. Months ago, I had a raincheck at Target, for 21% off of the the second season of Six Feet Under. When I returned to purchase it, they were still out, so I opted to substitute the first season of Carnivale, for 21% off, since they were about the same price, and the rainchecks clearly state you can sub it for something of the same type.

While checking out, a manager overheard me stating I had a raincheck, and very hatefully told me "We don't do substitutions!". I calmly showed him the check, and read the substitution policy aloud to him, and he woudln't budge. I told him I wanted the name of his district supervisor, as well as his name and employee number. Promptly, his story changed. He said they could substitute it out, and also instructed the cashier to give me my other DVD, Family Guy season 3, for 21% off as well, even though it was a sale price of 22.99 already, making it about $16.

I still called Target, just to tell them that managers seemed to be picking and choosing, who got the substitutions, based on item price. They asked for my address, and mailed me a $25 gift certificate about 3 weeks later, apologizing for the distasteful service.

You shouldn't have to deal with bad attitudes, when you're handing a store your money week after week. Pricematches don't come out of their checks, they're part of a store policy and should be heard out, before making snap decisions.

I've have not had a problem getting them to price match 2 for $20 (or similar) deals. Must be a YMMV thing I guess.

Yeah, I agree. I think it's pretty safe to assume that if this deal was legit, someone on this forum would have started a thread regarding it already. And we'd be all over it.

So were there any stipulations to the AOL deal? Just curious...but if it looks too good to be true....

Best Buy should match the 2/20 3/30 ads from places like Circuit City. I successfully PM'd 3/30 last week and picked up the Kill Bill movies. You should not have a problem doing it, and if they give you a hard time - ask them to show you where it states they only price match "some" offers. It doesn't.

just because you had success doing it doesn't mean that everyone will. The reason is that both Best Buy & Circuit City's PM policies state something along the lines of them not having to PM offers (2 for $20, 3 for $30, etc. are all types of offers). Now if the movies were $10 each then they would have to PM it.

In the distant past I have pricematched 2 for 20, 3 for 20, etc. offers at BBY without problems. When they did it they used a special "promo package" code linking the items together. One time when I tried to return 1 (in part to see what would happen) I was told I had to return both or pay normal price (more) for the 1 I wanted to keep. I then got the other 1 and returned both. I can't blame them for doing that, and I haven't tried any package promo deals for probably at least a year. Why? Because I have yet to see any 2 for 20, 3 for xx, etc. deal where I could actually find 2 or 3 titles I wanted. It seems at this point (without exception so far) I always own just enough titles on the list that it's not possible for me to reach the quantity required for the deal. However, unless BBY has changed their policies, price matching such package deals shouldn't be a problem since their system has a special code for this purpose.

Yeah, I have no problem price matching package deals with Best Buy. A couple weeks ago Circuit City had 2for15 with Paramount titles, I ended up with an odd number and they still gave me the extra one for $7.50. -eek-
It's definitely a YMMVABB situation.

I hate Best Buy, I've had so many negative experiences with them that I don't even bother to pricematch anymore. I only try it when I know a certain manager is around and she seems to be pretty cool about pricematching. The rest of the times I'm almost sure to get shot down. They always seem to find excuses for not pricematching.

One of my gripes is that living in L.A. we have plenty of CC stores around so just because one CC down the street doesn't have it in stock now doesn't mean that all CC stores in the L.A. area don't have it. Sometimes I get the "this is below our cost" excuse.

Good luck to all who try to pricematch at BB.

P.S. For the member who had that ordeal with the BB manager not even looking at the ad, let us know what happens if you contact corporate. I've e-mailed them once about a different problem and never even got a reponse back.

P.P.S. Anyone try this at any CC store in the L.A. area? A buddy of mine wants to try and get Season 1 for $4.99.

I played dumb at my Walmart who had a few Season 1 Friends sets and I asked if I could pricematch it to the CC ad. The guy said sure until he rang it up and it was almost $30. So he took my CC ad, said he'd go up front to check it, and he'd be back soon. About 10 minutes later I got tired of waiting and finally found him somewhere else. He gave me back my ad which was missing some pages he lost along the way (the pages I needed of course), so I had to track those down. He told me that the appropriate supervisor wasn't available, so I'd have to come back later to see about the pricematch. I said forget it and thanks for wasting my time. It's one thing to say no up front (which is what I expected) but to make it sound like they can do it only to tell you after waiting 10 minutes because nobody's there who can make a decision (and I'm sure the decision would've been no anyway) is the typical brilliance I'd expect. I could try it tomorrow with maybe somebody else, but the probability of success is too low to waste another 10 minutes in Walmart. They didn't have Lethal Weapon DC or Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil which was the only reason I was in there today. I'll see if BBY has either tomorrow. I'm amazed how pathetic Walmart's DVD selection is on anything but titles released within the last 6 months.

We both cancelled last night without a problem, so it looks like this is a FANTASTIC deal. Here is some fine print from my receipt, just to validate my claim:

"Your 45 day promotional service period begins today, with in-store registration for the AOL service. TO AVOID BEING CHARGED A MONTHLY FEE, simply cancel before the promotional period ends."

If someone else can verify this, feel free to start a brand new thread.

I'm not really getting what is so unreasonable about this. Most stores have it so low level employees/cashiers can only only pricematch within something like $10, anything more requires a supervisor with more access on the computer. With most stores being relatively understaffed in the spring, I would guess that it is entirely possible that he had trouble tracking one of the managers down to come to that one computer.

they are discussing this AOL deal over at fatwallet. according to them, you get a DVD up to $14.99 for free if you sign up for AOL, then you can go home and cancel. but of course be very careful with AOL and make sure they cancel it, they will try to keep charging you.

i guess the original posters of this deal got lucky with the higher priced DVDs.

My CC had plenty of the Friends First Season, but they also had a big notice up about the mistake in the advertisement. Oh well, nothing ventured...., anyway, picked up Lethal Weapon and Bridges of Madison County (my guilty pleasure). They had to pull those out of the boxes of the shipment they got today.

Decided not to even try the AOL thing, don't want the hassle of it.

I used to work at CompUSA and our store was offering $25 gift cards for an AOL signup and we even cleared with management that the customer could cancel immediately. This made getting people to sign up a no-brainer. CC probably has a promotion going with AOL and CC just wants to get the new accounts, they don't really care how they get them. The $14.99 DVD is probably cheaper at cost than what CC will get per new signup, thus making this a great deal for CC. They get to clear out low margin product, the customer is happy because they aren't trapped in anything and CC gets paid for making this customer happy. In the end, you're screwing over AOL, not CC so I think I need to go over at lunch.

CRAP! i had to get the one salesperson that looks very, very carefully at the ad. but his reason for declining the PM wasn't that it was incorrect. he said that the $4.99 price was for DVDs only and not for box sets. His claim was that "Circle of Friends" is also a box set on that ad and would not be included.

that's especially interesting since i was PMing at Best Buy and the ad was from Circuit City. I guess he's an expert at interepreting ads. I didn't argue much. oh well.

I was able to get the Friends Season 1 Boxset at Walmart for $4.99 via CC pricematch. At first the cashier didn't want to honor it because of the price difference but the store manager gave him the go ahead. But even after the transaction went through, the cashier still couldn't believe it LOL!

Manzana
02-09-05, 09:59 AM
baloux, you are one of the lucky few. I tried it "in passing" (meaning only at stores I was already at for something else... I wouldn't waste my time going in for a longshot like this), and I was told no every time. Basically, each employee would say let me check into it, would look at how much they were selling the Friends Season 1 set for (about $30), and quickly come back and say it must be a mistake which they couldn't honor. They were all quick to say no except Walmart which made me wait over 10 minutes and then call back the next day to get the answer. (Someone should always be readily available at any store to make such decisions, in my opinion.)

Success on things like these requires finding either a supervisor/employee who doesn't care (who probably doesn't plan to be at that job long) or who is ignorant of prices and costs. As someone who visits a group of stores typically one day each week, I'm quite amazed by how many of the same people I see each week, month, and year at the same stores. Apparently a lot of people stay in retail as a career (at least in my area) and they don't want to risk their jobs on pricematches. I never expected it to work for me (I gave it a 5% chance of success), but I'm surprised a few people had success on this PM.

actually, you may or may not be surprised to learn that i received that exact same email, word for word, with a different signature at the bottom. my complaint was about their in-store pickup and how slow it was and how the cashier had to go to the shelf to get the item which should have been waiting for me.

The fact that this thread lived--and people have actually successfully managed to get the deal--is hilarious. After I realized my interpretation of the ad was wrong, I figured it would sink to the depths of the forums, eventually settling underneath some Richard Simmons box set from 2001.

Go figure rotfl
