Hey, there seems to be a lot of Comic book fans here.....

I used to love the Uncanny X-Men, but I stopped reading them when I was a Junior in High School,(mid 80's) damn peer pressure,( ;) ) anyways, I was thinking of trying to get back into the storyline...but does this Comic still exist? and then what would be the easiest way to get all back issues, without having to buy them all.....

Thanks, in advance, for your help.....

The comic still exists -- in fact, there are 3 or 4 so-called "core" X-Men titles, plus umpteen spinoffs, including a Wolverine solo series. The books are somewhat different in tone from what the X-Men were in the mid-80s, but there's some similarity, too. Also, luckily for you, it's common practice these days to print collections of individual comics (these are typically referred to as "Trade Paperbacks").

I'm not a big X-Men fan, so others will have to chime in with what the best choices are for quality X-Men stories. But if you're looking for the stuff you read, you might look for a series of Trade Paperbacks called "Essential X-Men." These are black and white reprints of all the issues of the X-Men comic. They start in the mid-1970s and run through 5 or 6 volumes until the early-to-mid 1980s. There are also smaller, color Trade Paperbacks reprinting various storylines (the Phoenix saga is one you might remember, as is the Mutant Massacre). In terms of newer stuff, author Grant Morrison had a run on the book that a lot of people liked (I thought it was OK), and Joss Wheedon is currenlty writing one of the X-Men books, which is pretty good.

The best X book published right now is (IMO) Astonishing X-men. It is only on issue 8 right now and a trade paperback publishing (most likely) the first 6 issues. The back issues are really jumping in price right now.

Here's a link to back issues (http://www.mycomicshop.com/megastore/search.cfm?pcat=Comics%2DAll&til=27855) you can get cover images and issue summaries from there if you'd like.

I think the trade comes out in March or April.

I would say that if you want to get back into it read Astonishing X-men.

Basics you should know:

White Queen is now a good guy
Beast went through a second mutation and is now more ***** cat then anything else.
Wolvie is still over used and on every monthly.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll check out some of the series and titles this weekend, at the local comic store...

I have to 3rd the recommendation to try Astonishing X-Men - it is easily the most accessible X-Men title, imo.

** Essentials = color outer cover but black and white guts
** softcover Masterworks are Barnes & Noble exclusives
** I wouldn't bother with the current material
