WalMart DVD changes, YMMV
Don't know if this applies to all WalMarts, or just the one I was in last night, but it looks like they've got some changes coming for their DVD section.
A bunch of DVDs have been marked as discontinued. Others are being moved from the "Inline" case out to the "bargain bins" in the aisle. Others are staying put.
I noticed this when I went there to get Karate Kid. For the longest time I had seen the Pulp Fiction collectors edition there for about $20. But last night it was marked down to $13.72, and marked to be going out in the aisle display. So I finally gave in and bought it to replace the used rental VHS I had bought years ago.

One of those they had marked as discontinued was the latest Purple Rain release. That's not that old, and its price was up over $20 still. They also had older movies marked as discontinued - Ferris Bueller and Groundhog Day come to mind.
If they're moving stuff out to the aisle to make room in the lane, I would think they're also going to be getting rid of stuff in the aisle, unless they're going to make that display larger.
I felt pretty good about getting Pulp Fiction for that price. Now I just wish I didn't have to return and exchange it because the second disc I got is all scratched up. Damn it!

Didn't Wal-Mart raise their prices? I went to buy Sky CaptIn and AVP last week and they were both $19.96! Not to mention they had no widescreen copies of Sky Captain but anyway. $19.96 I might as well buy them in the freaking mall.

I don't think they've necessarily raised their prices as a rule. Sounds like normal operating procedure.
Like most places, WalMart has prices lowest on release week, then raises them. For example, I got Karate Kid Collection for $23.72. My receipt said I saved $4 and change off the regular price. So soon, probably after this week, it will go up to $27-$28.

The Wal-Mart here does put new releases on sale the week of release, but on Tuesday the sale prices are usually not displayed (so you have to ask an employee if a title is on sale). I've also purchased discs there on the release date only to find them selling it for less the following day (my guess is they lowered their price to match a competitor's price). This probably only applies to my local store.

I noticed yesterday when picking up The Grudge they had marked down The Twilight Zone (the new series) to $28.xx. I'll have to check on other things later.

basically, each wal-mart prices new release dvds comparable to other dvd sellers in the area. i go to school in gettysburg, and the only other dvd stores in town are wal-mart, sam goody and blockbuster. since wal-mart doesn't have to compete with stores such as best buy and circuit city, they charge $19.xx for new releases. Now, by my house in south jeresy, there is a walmart that is right down the street from a a target. therefore that wal-mart has to price comparable to the target and new releases will be $15.xx

Wal-Mart have their video resets every Feburary, June and September. The next reset beings the night of Feburary 14th. So all the markings you see on the labels is either where the title is moving to or if its being deleted from the Wal-Mart modular. The titles with the "last chance to buy" signing are titles that that store will no longer carry.

If you go to the mall their sale price would be $19.96 with the normal price being $29.96
